FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 73, No. 37 Wednesday, September 16,1987 Boll Weevil Expo Celebrates 10th Anniversary This year we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition on October 13-15 at Spence Field near Moultrie. In its first decade of operation, the Sunbelt Expo has established itself as the premiere farm show in the Southeast with national and international visitors and exhibitors. Attendance fig___ , _ __lures translate into an Expo that meets the needs of farmers and agribusinessmen. Our guest columnist this week is Dr. L. Edward White, Head, Rural Development Center and Conferences, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, Tifton31793. Pick Your Own Fall Fruit In Georgia, the harvest of apples and muscadines is a sure sign that fall is on the way. You can take advantage of these delicious Georgiagrown fruits at orchards and vineyards such as those shown above. Refer to the Pick Your Own chart on pages 6-7 to determine the location nearest you. Non-Commercial Cotton Included Under Program Since any cotton can serve as a host for the boll weevil, all noncommercial cotton (ornamental or experimental) located in the Boll Weevil Eradication Zone must be destroyed. To be in compliance with the Boll Weevil Eradication Program, this should have taken place by September 10. If you are not ready to harvest such cotton, you may apply to the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture for a waiver. After considering the location, acreage, accessibility, pest conditions and other circumstances, the waiver may be granted or denied. If the waiver is granted, you will have to comply with instructions issued by the Commissioner. For further information, contact Tom Kowalski at 404-656-9373. Since its beginning, an estimated 1.8 million people have visited the Expo. When the gates close on Expo '87, that number will likely surpass 2 million. The exhibitors will total over 5,000. Over 60 of these exhibitors will have participated each year for ten years. Most of them are grant-in-aid contributors and deserve much of the credit for the success of the Expo. Special recognition will include the presentation of a plaque by Commissioner Tommy Irvin to E. (Gene) W. Fraher, branch manager for Ford-New Holland. Fraher will represent the 10year exhibitors as the featured speaker for the Willie B. Withers Sunbelt Expo Exhibitor Luncheon. The Sunbelt Expo is more important today than when first organized. Farm equipment dealers and agribusinesses offering agricultural products have closed dealerships from Maine to California and from Georgia to Illinois. Because of high manufacturing costs and low volume sales, more equipment will be ordered from catalogs the farmer seeing the tractors or implements for the first time when they arrive. If a farmer is to see and compare farm equipment and technology, it will probably be at the Expo or not at all. Even if a farmer drives hundreds of miles, he will not be able to do the comparison shipping under the same field conditions. (Continued on page 12) ag consumer line... I want to buy a steer for slaughter from a friend who raises beef cattle. What percentage of the animal's total weight should I expect to get in meat? I have never done this before, so I don't know how much beef or how much of each cut to expect. Less than half the steer will be "take home" beef. When a 1,000 pound steer is slaughtered, the carcass will weigh about 615 pounds, about 61.5 percent of the live weight. Approximately 183 pounds of fat, bone and waste will be cut away from that, leaving 432 pounds of meat. The cuts and weights (in pounds) of each can be divided as follows: chuck 135, ribs 48, loin 78, round 84, flank 16, short plate 42, brisket 10, shank-19. The less tender parts of these sections can be made into ground beef, stew, or cubes for kabobs. Yields of other cuts will vary, depending on the cutting method and breed of steer. If you have problems or questions concerning products or services reg ulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Serv ice, Room 227, Agriculture Build ing, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Geor gia 30334, or call toll-free 1-800-2825852 or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta. Tobacco Grower Fined for Pesticide Misuse Georgia tobacco grower and warehouse owner Paul Draughn of Metter was fined $4000 by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin for alledged misapplication of the pesticide dicamba. The action was taken after an investigative hearing determined the pesticide has been misapplied on four of five fields grown by Draughn in Emanuel and Candler Counties, Laboratory analysis also revealed residues of the illegal pesticide on tobacco held for sale on the floor of the tobacco warehouse owned and operated by Draughn in Claxton and identified as having been grown by him. Following the hearing, Draughn signed a consent order agreeing to pay a $4000 fine. The Georgia Department of Agriculture suspended $1500 of the fine contingent upon Draughn's agreement to isolate his personal tobacco on the floor of his warehouse and his consent not to sell any of the crop harvested from his Emanuel and Candler County farms until it had been properly sampled and tested for illegal pesti- cide residues. "Tobacco growers were warned that they would be subject to action by this Department if illegal pesticides .were found on their leaf," noted Irvin. "I hope this action will let tobacco producers know that our Department will continue to take whatever action is authorized to protect the integrity of Georgia's flue-cured tobacco industry." ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category. In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication. I need to know how to make, repair and sharpen them. I would like to begin making harnesses and need the tools for this purpose. Any help would be appreciated. Donald Baxter 3038 Hacienda Court Marietta, Georgia 30066 Dear Editor: I am a work adjustment teacher at the Georgia Regional Hospital of Atlanta. My staff and I teach hospitalized mentally-ill patients to do craft work as part of their therapy. It makes them feel good to be productive and we market our crafts in the gift shop which they also help operate. Our present focus is on country crafts, such as decorated cheese hoops, Grandma's paddles, doorstops in the shape of cats along with many other items. Although our gift shop is open to the public, our present customers are hospital staff due to our location on hospital grounds in South DeKalb. We would like your readers to know about the work we are doing and would like to know of some craft fairs where we might be able to put up a booth. Sharie Smoot Vocational Teacher Georgia Regional Hospital of Atlanta 3073 Panthersville Road Decatur, Georgia 30058 Dear Editor: A request for lyrics to a song in your Helping Each Other column prompts me to remind all your readers that their public library has the answer to many of their questions. Not all public libraries are the same, but they all have a wealth of free information which can be found with the help of the reference librarian. Local college Libraries also are good resources. George O. Wilson 3349 Old Dixie Highway, SE Dalton, Georgia 30720 Editor's Note: Thank-you, Mr. Wilson! We also encourage Market Bulletin readers to take advantage of their local libraries. You can find information on everything from quilting to gardening and then some. In addition, many libraries offer large-print books for those folks with vision problems. Your library card can be the key to an abundance of information.
