FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Comm/ss/oner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 73, No. 2 Morgans Ideal Sport Horses The Morgan Sport Horse Association was founded in 1981 by a group of Morgan horse owners to promote the idea of an American-bred horse for sport activities. Over the years the Morgan, America's oldest breed, has had a strong tradition of ruggedness, versatility and tractability. As the ancestors of many American breeds, they passed on their great trotting ability to the Standardbred and the Saddlebred, and their agility and toughness to the Quarter horse. The Morgan generally was thought to be the best type of horse for the cavalry. At the U.S. Government Farm in Weybridge, Vermont, Morgans were bred and raised under strict supervision, with emphasis on endurance and strength Our guest columnist this week is Barbara S. Hodges, Southeast area representative, Morgan Sport Horse Association, Route 1, Box 310, Mount Airy 30563. in much the same manner as European stud farms tested their stock. From this tradition, Morgans found their way into state college programs, mounted police units and border patrols. Out of this history has emerged a very capable horse ranging from 14.1 to 16.2 hands that excels at competitive driving, dressage, jumping and endurance riding. The Morgan Sport Horse Association was formed to emphasize these particular uses. The success of Morgans competing in these sports is evident. For instance, Larry Poulin placed eighth overall in a field of 48 international competitors at the 1985 World Pairs Driving Championship in Sandringham, England. In dressage, Morgans continue to score well nationally at Prix St. Georges' level. Nancy Guyotte, riding her mare, Kate Linsley, placed 2nd at Millbrook, N.Y., in Combined Training. Morgan hunters, such as Primavera El Bonito, regularly win top honors in open competition. Morgans have been winning and Dlacing in the Vermont 100-Mile fade for many years. Space does not jermit a complete list of the Sport Morgan's recent accomplishments, )ut these examples should encourige Morgan owners of the sporting >ersuasion. Each landowner is limited to a total of $3,500 with a cost-share rate of 60 percent of replanting expenses. In a memorandum to all its foresters across the state, the Georgia Forestry Commission reported that $3,220,000 were designated for tree replanting and released by the Office of Management and Budget in Washington on Christmas Eve. Georgia received the largest share of the drought relief funds. According to program guidelines for Georgia, landowners must have planted pine seedlings during the 1983-84 season or afterwards and experienced failure due to the drought to be eligible for assistance. Any landowner can qualify for assistance, regardless of whether (Continued on Page 12) Prevention Key to Combatting Swamp Fever Just the mention of the words Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) can strike fear in the heart of any equine owner. This viral disease, also known as swamp fever, can attack horses, ponies, mules and donkeys, causing severe anemia, fever, weakness, weight loss, edema and sometimes death. Although the disease is more prevalent in warmer months, equine owners are urged to practice preventive measures year round. The virus is spread primarily by bloodsucking insects, such as horse flies and mosquitoes. But EIA also can be spread when needles and Special Equine Edition See Pages 6-8 other instruments used to treat horses are not sterilized adequately between patients. In its extreme form, the disease causes severe red blood cell destruction, resulting in anemia. Although an animal may recover, and the symptoms of the disease are no longer apparent, the animal will remain a carrier for life. Infection is not apparent always, but regular hard physical work or some other stress frequently causes some infec- tions to develop into clinically apparent cases. Clinical diagnosis of the virus is necessary because it can be confused with a number of other blood diseases or the presence of parasites. Presence of the disease is detectable by drawing a blood sam- ple and performing a Coggins Test from two to four weeks after the initial infection. A positive Coggins indicates the existence of the disease. As part of this observance, the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin features an annual Ag Day Contest which focuses attention on this vital industry. Over $400 in prize money will be awarded in this year's contest which is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Agribusiness Council, Pro gressive Farmer magazine, and the Metro Atlanta Ag Communicators. The competition, which consists of essay, photo and sketch categories, provides an opportunity for participants to utilize their creative skills and promote the awareness of agriculture. This year, the essay and photo categories are .open to students, but the sketch category is limited to adults only. School teachers are asked to encourage their students to participate, either individually or as part of a class project. Rules for the contest are listed below by category: ESSAY This year the essay category is open to students in three grade designations: fourth and fifth, sixth through eighth, and ninth through twelfth grades. Essays must be 250 words or less on the topic, "Agriculture: Our Heritage and Hope for the Future." Participants should keep in mind that agriculture affects not only farmers, but those who supply, deliver and sell food, fiber and other agricultural products. Essayists may write on the subject in general or choose a particular commodity and explain its relation to the theme. All essays must be written clearly and neatly. Illegible entries will be disqualified. Content, including originality and relation of essay to topic, will be the major criteria for selection. However, consideration will be given to both style and grammar. Each essay must be accompanied by a statement from the student's teacher verifying the grade and listing the school's name and address. If essays are submitted from an entire class, the teacher may photocopy the statement and attach it to each entry. Absence of this statement will disqualify entries. The student's name, grade and address must be included on each entry. Essays cannot be returned. PHOTO The photo category is open to (Continued on Page 12) Vidalia Onion Requirements Vidalia onion growers, packers and sellers or anyone who wishes to produce or package onions as Vidalias in 1987 must register ".rev qtjired tinder piles and regof the Vidalia i fi^ms to all .: packers; :-: tjbe;; Department of Forms sfeoipid and returned no later thati March 1, 1987) to tlie foMowing ad- dress: Georgia Department of Agriculture, Marketing Brttision, Room 324^ Capitol Square, Atlanta, GA 30334. ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category. In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication.
