FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy frv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 8 Wednesday, February 19, 1986 FFA Builds Ag Leaders The Future Farmers of America (FFA) has always dealt with the future of American agriculture. This group of ambitious, enthusiastic high school vocational agriculture students are on a mission a quest for success. The FFA pro gram consists of three basic parts vocational agriculture class, FFA activities, and the supervised occupational experience __ _ _s program. In class, the students learn skills that are necessary and vital to development in an agriculturerelated career. These skills include woodworking, livestock judging, and public speaking. Our guest columnist this week is Chad Barnes, state president, Future Farmers of America, Route 1, Box 49-B, Clermont 30527.______________________ The FFA then takes these skills and allows the students to participate in contests related to each of these activities. The opportunities are endless with contests held on the local, district, state, and national level. The group also allows for leadership training with public speaking and parliamentary procedure contests, as well as, chances to become an officer on the local, state and national level. The supervised occupational experience program allows students to put classroom knowledge to work. Students actually utilize classroom skills and FFA activities develop income and become directly involved in a business enterprise. This type of training will better prepare the students for a career not only in agriculture, but in any endeavor in which the student may enter. The basis and training for all of these activities is hope for the future of agriculture. The first line of the FFA Creed states "I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words, but of deeds." Through classroom instruction, FFA activities, and the supervised occupational experience program, students (Continued on Page 12) Fai^|Fi^iiit . - : : : ^Fo^^tio^ttjjt* -';':; ;. The 1986 national quota for flue-cured tobacco will he 757 million pounds two percent below the I98j> quota. Because of oveTff marketings of 35 million pounds in 1985, the effective quota will actually be 72t million pounds. The quota reduction is the maximum permitted by law, and is needed to reduce the total supply which exceeds domestic use and export needs by about 740 million pounds., Flue-cured tobacco producers will vote in March on a referendum to decide whether acreage-poundage quotas and price supports will continue for the next three years. An approval is needed by two-thirds of the producers to continue the programs. The 1986 national acreage allotment is 380,593 down from the 1985 Free Hot Line Established To Aid Distressed Ga. Deadline Draws Near For Ag Day Contest Tree Planting Focus Of Annual Observance Georgia citizens are encouraged to participate in the observance of Arbor Day February 21 to focus attention on one of the state's most valuable resources trees. Forests account for 63 percent of Georgia's land area and contribute $8 billion a year to the state's economy. In fact, the state produces 2.9 billion board feet of solid wood products yearly and continues to lead the nation in the production of naval stores. Trees, also aid the soil in the retention of water, which reduces flood runoff and prevents soil erosion. In addition, forests provide cover and food for the state's wildlife and recreation for citizens and tourists. Arbor Day actually began in Nebraska April 10, 1872. A newspaper publisher, J. Sterling Morton, realized the value of trees in enriching the soil and conserving moisture. Through his efforts, the state government set aside a day for the planting of trees. Over a million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. The state later changed the date to April 22, Mor- ton's birthday, and made it a state holiday. Now Arbor Day is celebrated throughout the nation, although it is not observed on the same day in each state because of differences in climate. While national Arbor Day is celebrated in April, the third Friday in February has been designated for the observance in Georgia. Before planting a tree this Arbor Day, do a little planning to insure the tree's survival and to avoid future problems. Once a tree has grown to a considerable size, it is not easily transplanted. Consider the size of the roots and branches when it reaches maturity. Trees that grow to a large size, like oak, should not be planted within 60 feet of buildings. Also, make certain trees are a safe distance from power lines, sewer pipes, cesspools, driveways and sidewalks. Trees purchased from nurseries stand a better chance of survival than those dug from the wild. When purchasing trees, be sure they are healthy and are not skinned or damaged. All entries for the annual Agriculture Day Contest should be submitted to the Market Bulletin office by February 28. The contest has been planned in honor of National Agriculture Day which will be observed March 20. Details for entering various categories are outlined on page 12. Since February is egg month in Georgia, it is appropriate to honor the state's egg producers and the laying hens that produce more than 3.3 billion eggs annually. Each layer produces an average of 245 eggs yearly with an annual produc tion valued at almost $200 million.
