FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 6 Wednesday, February 5, 1986 d Group Promotes Georgia Eggs As a Georgia egg producer, I am honored that Governor Harris has proclaimed February as Egg Month in Georgia! His recognition of our industry's importance to the state is I especially appreiciated this year, in I that 1986 marks the (Georgia Egg ComI mission's 25th AnI niversary! Since the Geor|gia Egg Commisision's inception by jproducers in 1961, |funds have come strictly from a producer-paid assessment, and no tax money has been used. Three important programs were established to aid producers and consumers alike: Promotion, Education, and Research. Our guest columnist this week is Ed Houston, egg producer from Lumber City, Georgia, and currently chairman of the board for both the Georgia Egg Commission and the American Egg Board. Thanks to Commission-sponsored research, poultry scientists at the University of Georgia have helped develop better production techniques, better feed, and better birds. This assures the consumer of a higher quality product at an affordable price. In celebrating its 25th year, the Commission becomes the oldest, continuous egg promotion group in the nation. During its history, the Commission has earned the respect of producers, consumers, and other egg promotion groups throughout the United States for its innovative promotional and educational efforts. Similar to the Georgia program, but national in scope, is the American Egg Board (AEB). Its funding is through a voluntary assessment. To strengthen the AEB program, and to assure its future, all egg producers are currently considering the establishment of a Marketing Order. If approved, the Order would establish a mandatory assessment for egg research and promotion and also authorize surplus fowl removal. Since the Georgia Egg Commission began, there have been many changes in our industry; and yes, (Continued on Page 12) Vidalia Onion Law Receives Approval Legislation involving the popular Vidalia onion was signed into law last week by Georgia Governor Harris. The legislation limits a commercial Vidalia production area, defines what constitutes a Vidalia onion, requires registration of producers, packers and sellers and includes a felony violation for packaging, labelling or selling imposter onions as Vidalias. The legislation passed easily in both the state House and Senate. The Governor signed it last Friday im- mediately after the Senate vote in order to speed implementation of the law and accompanying rules and regulations in time for the 1986 growing and marketing season. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin hailed the new provisions as solid and sound enforcement tools that will work to the benefit of producers, sellers and consumers in reviving and protecting a premium Georgia product whose reputation was being tarnish- ed by unscrupulous operators. "I am gratified that the Legislature saw fit to give us the teeth to ade- quately enforce truthful labelling of Vidalia onions," Irvin noted. "Through the rules and regulations we have already, drawn up, and by limiting production to the true "heart" of historical Vidalia onion production, I believe we have ensured a growing and viable market for this premium, and profitable Georgia product." (Continued on Page 12) I I Portions of the county designated Protect Frozen Foods During Power Failures Winter power outages cause concern for consumers, particularly when a freezer stocked with food is involved. However, by taking proper action, frozen food can be saved from spoilage when outages occur. When the power is off, food keeps longer in a full freezer than in one half-filled. A half-filled freezer will keep foods frozen only about 24 hours. For this reason do not use a larger freezer than needed. Do not open the freezer unless absolutely necessary. Opening the door will hasten the thawing of foods. Cover the freezer with blankets to help insulate it and keep the cold air in. But do not cover up the air vent. The vent must be kept open since air is needed when electricity comes on. If power is not restored after a couple of days, dry ice can be placed in the freezer to keep the temperature below freezing. Dry ice can be purchased from food companies, chemists or pharmacists. Fifty pounds of dry ice will keep the food safe three to four days longer in a full 20 cubic foot freezer. Dry ice should be placed on boards or heavy cardboard on top of the packages not directly on food packages. Do not handle dry ice with bare hands because it can cause burns. Also, make sure the room is ventilated when using dry ice. (Continued on Page 12) Commodity Referendums Seek Producer Approval Georgia peach and tobacco producers will be voting this month on reaffirmation referendums to decide on continuing their commodity commissions for another three year period. The 30 day balloting periods are set from February 1 through March 2, 1986 for peaches and February 10 through March 11, 1986 for tobacco. All ballots must be postmarked by midnight of the deadline dates and received by the Georgia Department of Agriculture to be counted as eligible votes. The 1969 Georgia Agricultural Commodities Act stipulates that a favorable vote of 66-2/3 percent of the producer's voting must be received to continue the Commissions' programs of research, promotion and education. Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, is urging all eligible producers of both commodities to be sure and vote in each of their respective referendums. Tobacco Growers Urged To Attend Annual Meeting The Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation, the grower-owned cooperative which administers the price support program for flue-cured tobacco, has scheduled its 28th Annual District Meeting for Georgia growers for February 11. The meeting will be held in the Waycross Family YMCA, 1634 Plant Avenue (Blackshear Highway) beginning at 2 p.m., according to B. Frank Strickland, Georgia director and Fred G. Bond, general manager. A complete and detailed report on Stabilization's operations will be one of the major topics presented at the meeting. In addition, special emphasis will be given to explaining pending federal legislation and its effect upon the 1986 tobacco program and subsequent years. Ample time will be provided at the meeting for discussion of these topics. A business session will be held (Continued on Page 12) Farm New U.S. Agriculture Secretary Richard Ljrng was apppiBted as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture by President Reagan last week to replace Secretary John Block who leaves the post February 14. Lyng served the president as deputy agriculturei secretary during his first term, and in California as director of agriculture when Reagan ; : was: governor*.' f-t-^ of the very . Agriculture. Unlike Secretary IJlock, Lyng's longtime association with President Reagan will allow him the full attention of the President. That will help ensure that the farm sector of America is heard at the highest level."
