FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 5 Wednesday, January 29, 1986 Disease Studies Benefit Ga. Crops Without plants there would be no animals - that includes you and me! And, without appropriate disease control, many crops, such as peanuts and pecans, could not be grown economically in Georgia. Therefore, the primary concern of plant pathologists is to understand, develop and disseminate basic applied knowledge about | plant diseases. This includes information about biotic disease causing agents such as fungi, viruses, bacteria and nematodes, as well as the abiotic disease causing agents Our guest columnist this week is Dr. W. N. Garrett, chairman, Plant Pathology Division, Miller Plant Sciences Building, University of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Athens 30602._________________ such as air pollutants. Our primary objective is to manage or control plant diseases using biological, chemical, cultural, germplasm enhancement, and biotechnology approaches. In a recent review of our University of Georgia program, we found that our research effort could be placed in seven categories. Disease resistance has been studied by our faculty for many years. Several projects that were developed in cooperation with plant breeders have resulted in the release of new resistant cultivars. This is a very important research area that deserves even greater attention in the future. The molecular basis of pathogenecity is a new scientific area that is gaining world-wide attention at this time. We initiated this thrust in 1984 and expect it to be an expanding and exciting research area during the next ten years. Epidemiology is a continuing research effort in our program. Assessment of losses is a prerequisite in the development of any crop production or management program; it is generally inefficient, illogical, and ineffective to attempt to solve a problem that has not been properly identified. As a reliable crop loss models are developed, (Continued on Page 12) Winter Weather Poses Threat Farm Front To Unprotected Nursery Stock U.S. Farm Population Approximately 5.75 million people lived on U.S. farms in 1984, according to the Commerce Department's Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. This figure is about 33,000 less than in 1983. But, the decline is not significant, according to demographers and may be due to statistical sampling errors. The Midwest maintained the largest share of |arm residents, with 44 percent in 1984. The South tanked second with 36 get&eiit, followed % the West with 15 percent and the Northeast with six percent. Eighty-seven percent of Georgia's nursery stock is grown in containers for easier handling. But, this production technique can make protection from freezing temperatures difficult. Last winter for example, unprotected nursery container stock was devastated when temperatures dipped to zero and below throughout the state. When a hard freeze is predicted, nurserymen and consumers can take precautions to protect plants from the cold. While plants should be watered throughout winter months, they should not be sprinkled with water during a freeze. Such sprinkling could cause plants to ice over and can do more harm than good. The exposed trunks of young trees also can be wrapped with material from local nurseries to provide protection from the combination of cold temperatures and warm sun. Nurserymen can jam container Georgia Ag History Sugar Cane Production Popular On Many Small Georgia Farms Although Louisiana and Florida are the major sugar cane producers in the Southeast, the crop has been grown on a limited basis in Georgia since the 1700's. As early as 1735, Indians along the Savannah River were using sugar cane to make a drink similar to rum. Throughout the latter part of the eighteenth century, Georgia growers began to cultivate cane and, although rum was made from the juice, efforts to make sugar met with little success. Along Georgia's coastal area, conditions were similar to those of the cane producing regions of Loui- siana. But, though there was rich soil and adequate rainfall, the area was considered only a marginal cane pro- ducing area because of the possibility of cold weather damage. Growers began experimenting with sugar cane production in the early 1800's, but several factors delayed the expansion of sugar culture. The Embargo and Nonintercourse acts and the War of 1812 had put Southern agriculture in a depressed condition because they prohibited shipment of goods to other countries. In addition, planters already burdened by debt did not care to sink money into the cultivation of what they considered an experimental crop that they knew little about. The high prices of cotton and rice further removed the incentive to undertake a new crop. (Continued on Page 10) This old cane grinder probably brings back fond memories for many farmers. Making cane syrup once was a routine fall activity on many farms throughout the South. The grinder shown above is located on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kinchen of Cairo. stock together, water the plants, and cover them with white plastic when freezing temperatures are predicted. Although tops of plants can adapt and harden off to cold weather, roots cannot. In many cases, tops remain alive while roots are dead. Nursery experts say fine feeder roots die at about 15 degrees F while large roots are killed at 0 degrees F, though many species can suffer at 25 degrees F. Nurserymen and consumers can check plants after a hard freeze to determine possible damage. Look at the roots and tug on some of the smaller roots. The root is dead if the outside of the root pulls off and leaves the core. If small roots are damaged, a fungicide drench may help prevent root rot and save some plants. Check large roots, too. If they are dead, the entire plant probably will die. The severe freeze in 1985 prompted Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin to ask nurserymen to discontinue sale of any questionable stock for two weeks while damage was assessed. Agriculture inspectors then checked stock at Georgia nurseries to help decide if the plants were salvageable. Nurserymen across the state worked closely with consumers to assure plants purchased were not damaged. "Georgia has 7,172 acres of nurseries and a horticulture industry worth over $600 million," concluded Irvin. "Those figures alone warrant an extra effort during the winter to protect plants from cold damage." Agriculture Focus Of Annual Contest National Agriculture Day will be observed March 20, the first day of spring. This day is set aside each year to recognize the nation's largest industry - agriculture. In observance of this special day, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Agribusiness Council, the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Progressive Farmer magazine will sponsor the fourth annual Agriculture Day Contest. Over $400 in prize money will be awarded in the Contest which focuses on farming. Details for entering various categories are outlined on page 12.
