FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 49 Use Ga. Grown Christmas Trees The Georgia Christmas Tree Association Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 1960, promotes the production and marketing of high quality Christmas trees and associated products. Members include growers, buyers, sellers and suppliers of the natural Christmas tree industry in Georgia. More than 80 per cent of the association's members are growers located in sections throughout Georgia. There are two or three Christmas tree farms in most counties in the I state ranging in I size from two or I three acres up to 1100 or more. Many farms are operated as a family business where members participate in producing and marketing Christmas trees. More than Our guest columnist this week is H.E. Ruark, president-elect of the Georgia Christmas Tree Association Inc., P.O. Box 647, Bostwick 30623. half of the farms are choose and cut operations where customers bring their families to choose and cut their own tree. This has become a Christmas tradition across the state. There is no more joy anywhere than seeing and feeling the excitement of children encouraging their parents to cut every tree in the field. The husband often becomes exhausted, but is happy when his family finally selects that special Christmas tree for their home. Often several neighborhood families will make a day of going to a Christmas tree farm together. They often bring food and have a picnic. One of the neighbors will drive his pickup truck and load it down with trees. It is a sight to see when the entourage leaves the farm waving and saying, "We will see you next year." On farms that sell wholesale to buyers for retail lots, it is a different scene. Trees are tagged for each (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday, Decembers, 1986 ag consumer line. . . When buying firewood at a retail outlet, how do I know I'm getting the exact species as stated on the label? I like hickory, but certain name brands seem to burn differently. Our rules state that wood must be designated within 10 percent accuracy as to the type or species. For instance a cord may be advertised as 50 percent hickory, 30 percent pine and 20 percent assorted softwoods, as long as each of the figures is not off by more than 10 percent. Check the label of the brand you intend to buy. *** What is the best type of fuel to use in my kerosene heater? Do not use any fuel other than the clear white IK kerosene recommended by the manufacturer. Never substitute fuel oil, diesel fuel or yellow (regular) kerosene. Substitute fuels have more sulfur than the clear white kerosene and high levels of sulfur dioxide can be harmful. *** How long does it take to dry wood? What is the best storage method? It usually takes about nine months or more to dry wood. The best way to ensure that you have dry wood is to cut it the winter before the heating season you plan to use it. Cut the wood into lengths to fit your burner and split all pieces more than eight inches in diameter. Pile wood in loose stacks off the ground, on bricks or poles, so air can circulate through it and cover to protect it from rain and snow. FmHA Emergency Loans Available For Farmers The Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) recently announced a special interest rate for farmers seeking emergency loans as a result of drought, flooding and other weather-related crop loss during calendar year 1986. Effective immediately, qualifying farmers who file for such loans will receive an interest rate of 4.5 percent, according to Paul M. Herndon, FmHA state director for Georgia. The action was taken in response to a provision in the omnibus continuing (appropriations) resolution enacted by Congress just prior to its adjournment in October. The reductions represented by the uniform rate place interest on emergency loans on a par with interest charged on direct farm operating loans made to "limited resource" borrowers. The emergency loan funds can be used for restoration or replacement of damaged property, payment of production costs for the disaster year or the next year, payment of delinquent debt installments, living expenses, purchase of machinery, equipment and foundation live- stock, reorganization of a farming system and refinancing of short, intermediate or long-term debt. Applicants must meet regular eligibility requirements, be an established family farm operator, be a citizen or legal resident alien, have ability to repay the loan, be located in a designated county, have suffered a minimum 30 percent crop loss, be unable to obtain suitable credit elsewhere and be able to provide adequate security. Applicants may obtain further information on emergency loans at FmHA offices serving in the counties where they live. Robberies of these barns have netted quite a haul of high-priced western and English equipment and three horses to date. A majority of the barn and horse owners victimized had been approached earlier by strangers looking for horses to buy or shoe. Horse owners are cautioned to use extreme care about showing strangers their tackrooms and around their premises. Locks should be put on all tack-room doors and pasture gates where possible. Keep in mind that many thieves depend on public Ignorance and apathy to facilitate their countinuIng success. Jayne H. Stephenson 3292 Paper Mill Road Marietta, Ga. 30067 Editor's Note: Should you become a victim of horse or equine equipment theft, immediately notify local law enforcement agencies. In addition, stolen horses should be reported as soon as possible to the Georgia Department of Agriculture's equine division, so that field inspectors can be on the look out for them. Call the equine division at 6563713. Dear Editor: After picking beans this summer, this little ditty kept running through my head. Since it concerns agriculture, I thought you might like to share it with the Market Bulletin readers. To toll and pick Is my delight, Be It blackberry, bean or pea. For after my "lay me down to sleep," There's really no need for counting sheep. Dorothy Jones P.O.
