FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin ui Vol. 72, No. 47 Wednesday, November 19, 1986 Farm and City Interdependent November 21-28, 1986, represents a special week for many citizens in Georgia. The week prior to Thanksgiving is celebrated each year as Farm-City Week. Farm-City Week is a national program designed to bring about a better understanding between rural and urban segments of society. In Georgia, the program is coordinated jointly by the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, Georgia Electric Membership Corporation and the Georgia Farm Bureau. Our guest columnist this week is Horace E. Hudson, head, Community Development Department, State Farm-City Week chairman, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.______ Each year communities plan and coordinate local activities to accomplish the overall objectives of FarmCity Week. Highlights of the week will include farm and industrial development tours, school programs, farm petting zoos, special church sermons, essay contests and banquets to honor the farmer and/or business person of the year. The magnitude of the activities will vary, but several counties like Laurens and Coffee, will observe activities throughout the week. Is there a need to bring about a better understanding between rural and urban Georgia? I think so and so do many others. Certainly there are many indicators that point to a widening gap between many areas of Georgia. Current data and information note differences in personal income, education levels, availability of jobs, land values and overall economic indicators. These differences need to be better understood by all Georgians whether they consider themselves to be rural or urban. This can best be accomplished through personal contact and activities that encourage exchange of ideas. Farm-City Week is being cele- brated nationally for the 31st consecutive year. Let's all work together to build a better Georgia support Farm City Week in your county. ag consumer line ... Is it safe to burn wood in the fireplace that has been treated with pesticides? There is construction going on in my neighborhood and I want to get some of the wood scraps to burn for the winter. No, it is not safe to burn treated wood in the fireplace or the stove or heater, for that matter. Treated wood products contain poisonous chemicals such as arsenic, copper and chromium, all of which get into the air when the wood is burned. The Environmental Protection Agency now requires companies that sell treated timber products to provide each customer with an information sheet about the hazards of such products and howto use them safely. How can I get rid of the crickets that are invading my basement? Our entomologist recommends diazinon granules to control crickets in the yard. When they come inside, a household ant and roach killer will control them effectively. As with all pesticides, read and follow label directions carefully. Indoors, use only products that are labeled for inside use. ***** // you have questions or com plaints regarding products or serv ices regulated by the Georgia De partment of Agriculture, call Con sumer Services toll-free at 1-800-2825852, or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645, or write: Consumer Services, Room 227, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334. Sweet Potato Harvest Underway in Georgia Georgia's sweet potato harvest currently is underway after being delayed several weeks in some areas due to extreme hot, dry weather earlier in the season. Some growers have reported an increase in insect problems, particularly wire worm damage, and reductions in yields. According to Gary Tankersley, county Extension director in Ocilla, harvest in his area is several weeks behind normal. Although it is too early to determine how much the crop will be reduced this year, Tankersley said yields were down with about the same acreage planted as last year. He noted that the potatoes harvested thus far have been more rounded or "baseball shaped," but overall the quality was good. K.A. Veal, chairman of the Georgia Commodity Commission for Sweet Potatoes, reported his harvest in Ocilla two to three weeks behind schedule. Veal noted that his yields were lower than the previous year, but the quality of the crop remains high. "Although customers will find supply down this year, the taste and quality of the potatoes should be good," said Veal. "Our potatoes taste as good or better than ever this year." The grower also noted that he looks for an improvement in vine quality which will provide good seedlings to begin next year's crop. Gibbs Patrick Jr., a grower in Omega, agreed that quality and consumer demand will be high, but supply will be short. Prices have already shown signs of improvement which should help to offset some of the problems faced by growers. The earlier drought conditions slowed the growth of potatoes requiring them to stay in the ground longer before harvest. This led to more below surface damage and required growers to spray more often. Whereas growers usually apply insecticide and incorporate it at planting and again when the roots begin to swell, Veal noted he (Continued on Page 16) What's Inside Ga. The training session, held in Atlanta this past September, was sponsored by the Georgia Extension Service, Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Electric Membership Corporation in preparation for the annual Farm-City Week observance. First ad must be accompanied by report which will be returned if requested. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Florida 302, Coker, Saluda, Caldwell and Hunter may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act.
