FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 40 Group Helps Ga. Dairymen During the month of October, Georgia dairy farmers will have the opportunity to vote to continue the operation of the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk. The ACCM was the first agricultural commodity commission organized in the state, and this year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of its existence. Throughout this period, programs of research, promotion and education have been financed by producer assessment. The Commission has served many times as a forum for representatives of various Our guest columnist this week is John Bagwell, chairman, Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk, 100 Bagwell Road S.W., Cave Spring 30124.____ dairy organizations in Georgia to meet and discuss mutual problems. The opportunity for communication usually has resulted in a consensus agreement that has enabled our industry to put aside differences and work toward common goals that benefit each and every dairyman. The Commission has been certified by the National Dairy Research and Promotion Board and receives the ten cent per hundredweight credit that is allocated to states that have an on-going promotional program. This certification enables Georgians to control expenditure of the bulk of their mandatory assessment. The ACCM allocates the bulk of this income for consumer advertising, and producer, consumer and educational programs. I have had the opportunity to serve as a producer member of the Commission for several years and as chairman for the past year. Along with the other members of the Commission, we pledge our continuing efforts to expend your dollars to support programs that offer the greatest returns to the dairymen of Georgia. I urge each of you to vote and support the ACCM during the referendum. By working together, we can and will survive. Commodity Commission for Milk Referendum Voting Dates October 1-30 Wednesday, October 1,1986 1985 Farm Income Declines in Ga. Georgia farmers earned a gross farm income of $3.83 billion in 1985, according to recent figures released by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service in Athens. Although this represented an eight percent drop from the record $4.09 billion received in 1984, it still was the second highest on record. The visit is part of the on going State/Provincial Agricultural Accord, established as a mechanism to discuss trade opportunites and irritants. Irvin and agriculture leaders from other states first visited Canada as part of the Accord in May 1986. The Canadian agricultural ministers will discuss five trade issues with their U.S. counterparts, including the following: problems with stored vegetables in Northeastern states; apple maggots in fruit traded between Washington state and British Columbia; Mclntosh apples from New York; supply management for Northeast U.S. and Canadian dairymen; and (Continued on Page 13) Compete for Tickets To '86 Harvest Ball The annual Harvest Ball, sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, has become a fall tradition. This year, you will again have the opportunity to compete for tickets to the ball and lodging at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta by participating in the agribusiness statement contest. Referendum Scheduled For Boll Weevil Program Due to changes in the payment plan for the proposed boll weevil eradication program, Georgia cotton growers will have the opportunity to vote in another referendum Oct. 13-27. Growers narrowly defeated the proposed plan in a referendum last December. Since last year, changes have been made in participation fees and initial payments from farmers will be less. Over a four-year period, farmers will pay $10 per acre the first year, $35 per acre the second and third years and $25 per acre the fourth year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will pay the (Continued on Page 16) (Continued on Page 13) Drought Causes Loss In Farm Cash Receipts Georgia farmers are facing an estimated loss of $239.65 million in cash receipts for seven major crops as a result of the summer-long drought, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The state's corn crop suffered the most in monetary losses of the seven crops $77.85 million.. Other loss estimates are $54.2 million in peanuts, $35.2 million in cotton, $32 million in soybeans, $28.7 mil- lion in hay, $11.6 million in tobacco and $1.9 million in sorghum. Irvin said that the loss estimates are based on latest projections of the Crop Reporting Service for total crop production and the latest available average price farmers have received for their crops. Irvin said farmers planted less acreage this year, accounting for another drop in cash receipts of $205.35 million. "I think that this is a realistic estimate of crop damage in Georgia," Irvin added. "Commodities such as broilers, which did have some drop in production, also have had higher prices, and that should make up for most of the losses." Irvin said farmers will know more about the final value of their l&sses as the harvest continues. Tobacco, which has already been harvested, is scheduled for several final sales this week as tobacco markets close, and full figures on the value of the 1986 tobacco crop will be available next week. Wednesday, October 1,1986 THE MARKET BULLETIN Page 11 Farm Safety Measures (Continued from Page 16) safety shoes, etc.) to prevent injury or illness. Make safety checks of the house, yard, lots and outbuildings to discover any existing hazards such as broken steps or exposed flammable materials. Remove any hazardous substances or devise ways to protect against dangers that cannot be removed. When hunting for hazards, ob tain a fire safety checklist from the local fire department and inspect heating, cooling and electrical sys tems. Since serious illness and injury can occur unexpectedly, be prepared to cope with the situation until help arrives. This is especially true if good medical or rescue services are located miles away: Learn first-aid, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich maneuver (for choking victims). Keep a wellstocked first-aid kit and a good medical handbook. Post emergency phone numbers at each telephone. Teach children what to do in case of emergency. Develop and practice a plan for dealing with accidental injury and sudden illness. Harvest Festival The eighth annual Harvest Festi val will be held at Tugaloo State Park from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 25. For more information call 404-3564362. Makin' Do Place a piece of chalk in your jewelry box to keep costume trinkets from tarnishing. Baking powder should not be kept for more than a year because it loses its potency. To determine whether or not your baking powder still can be used, place one teaspoon in one-third cup of hot tap water. The mixture should bubble vigorously. Place a piece of alum (often available in drug stores) in your silverware drawer to slow the tarnishing process. To prevent pasta from becoming sticky before serving, drain it in a warmed colander after cooking and serve in a warmed dish. The secret is to keep pasta warm since it becomes sticky after cooling. Milk will keep chocolate stains from setting. The problem with storing food in your freezer is that you often do not know what is located where. Resolve this situation by placing fruits on one side, meats in the middle and vegetables on the other side. You may want to draw a map indicating where items are located. To remove polish build up from furniture, mix two cups of vinegar with two cups of water. Rub with a soft cloth moistened with the solution and dry immediately with a soft, dry cloth. If your tomato sauce is not sweet enough, add grated carrots rather than sugar. Save empty gift wrap tubes for storing your child's art "masterpieces."
