FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 4 Wednesday, January 22, 1986 BOWCK Research Aids Georgians Animal agriculture is a very important industry in Georgia. This industry provides over half of the farm income in our state as well as our nation. The value of Georgia's animal industry recently was estimated to be $2.3 billion, of which more than half is derived from poultry. To help protect agricultural animal health in Georgia, the State Legislature provides funding for the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station (VMES) at The University of Georgia. The primary mission of the Our guest columnist this week is Dr. John M. Bowen, director of the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, Athens 30602. VMES is to coordinate and conduct biomedical research on animal disease problems of present or potential concern to the livestock and poultry industries in Georgia. Accomplishment of this mission serves to enhance profitability on the farm as well as to keep the prices of animal products at reasonable levels to consumers. In establishing research priorities, the station seeks assistance from the various animal producer and commodity groups, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories at Athens and Tifton. Our research priority list is reevaluated annually and changes are made to most effectively meet the current needs of animal agriculture. Animal disease problems receiving special emphasis this year include avian infectious bronchitis, pleuropneumonia of swine, bovine respiratory disease, equine colic, white spot disease of fish, and various toxicology problems affecting several species of animals and people. Currently the VMES has no facilities of its own. It utilizes facilities of the College of Veterinary Medicine. This worked well during the early stages of development. But . as VMES and College programs have grown and as animal disease problems have become more complex, a critical need has arisen for special facilities for the VMES (Continued on Page 12) You will be Dropped from the mailing list for the MARKET BULLETIN unless we hear from you by January 31. Box 38313 Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Deadline for subscribers to respond is January 31 If you are a farm operator, it will be appreciated if you provide the following information. Response to these questions is voluntary and will be kept confidential by the Department of Agriculture and its cooperator, the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Total cropland acres farmed _ Current number of hogs and pigs __ Current number of cattle and calves _ Growers Urged to Vote on Referendums Georgia egg and sweet potato producers currently are voting on a reaffirmation referendum to decide on continuing their commodity commissions for another three year period. All ballots must be postmark- ed by midnight, January 30 and received by the Department of Agriculture to be counted as eligible votes. The 1969 Georgia Agricultural Commodities Promotions Act stipulates that a favorable vote of 66-2/3 percent of the producers voting must be received for continuation of the commissions' programs of research, promotion and education. In addition, peanut farmers in District 4 are balloting to nominate two of three producers to fill a single post on Georgia's Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts. The three candidates nominated earlier to represent the peanut producers of District 4 are Billy Griggs of Unadilla, James R. Smith of Cochran and incumbent George Whelchel of Cordele. After the list of nominees is narrowed from lhrt;e to two, ex-officio members of the Peanut Commission will appoint one to serve a three year term. All ballots for this referendum must be received by February 13, 1986 to be counted. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is urging all eligible producers of each commodity to be sure and vote in each of their respective referendums. Fraiit ':,\y--' - Goat Survey ;'f'.'.Researchers at Fort Valley State College will be surveying |pat owners throughout the state to find out more jabout the status of goat Operations in Georgia. A questionaire will foe mailed to goat owners this month asking them to identify the size of herds, the kinds of goats raised, and the amount of milk and meat produced. Scientists at the FVSC Agricultural Research Station will use this information to develop a profile of the goat industry in Georgia. Results of the survey should be available in April 1986. Protect Canned Goods From Cold Temperatures Last winter, many consumers were unprepared for the record-setting cold weather that swept through Georgia. The subzero temperatures caused many inconveniences, one of which was damage to improperly stored canned goods. Although the problem may be encountered again this winter, there are ways to protect stored food from cold weather damage. For example, avoid storing canned goods in unheated areas such as utility sheds and carports. In addition, canned food items may be packed in sawdust or hay to insulate them from extreme cold temperatures. If canned foods do freeze, they will be safe to eat for up to eight hours, according to Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists. At the freezing point, the temperature of the product is still too low to allow harmful bacteria to grow. However, all containers exposed to freezing temperatures should be checked for damage before the contents are consumed. Signs to look for include split seams or bulging ends on cans. Cracked jars or broken seals on home canned products also indicate likely damage to the contents. Agricultural leaders from around the country will discuss and explain the key laws and regulations dealing with pesticides, occupational safety and health, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and sources of agricultural workers. The proposed Immigration Reform and Control Act, currently before Congress, also will be covered briefly.
