FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 31 Wednesday, July 30, 1986 Gale Buctouuut Research Vital For Ag Future These are not the best of times for agriculture. With a national farm debt approaching $140 billion, agricultural exports declining almost 20 percent in the past five years, land a devastatingly isevere drought lover much of the [region during the jpast four months, lone could almost I be forgiven for not I showing enthuIsiasm for agriculture today. We have broad-based agribusiness support, a free enterprise system, effective means of transportation, and most importantly, many, many highly enlightened farmers who continuously seek out new knowledge and information. The role and responsibility of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, and other units of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station System, is to provide the new technology necessary to keep Georgia on the competitive edge in agriculture. The mission of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, as I envision it, is to conduct the research necessary to insure the success of Georgia's farmers. Our research program involves every commodity produced in South Georgia and some commodities that are not commercially feasible but have potential for our state. Research at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station ranges from the very practical such as variety evaluations and crop responses to fertility, to the very fundamental such as determining the nature of host-plant resistance to insects. (Continued on Page 12) Hay Shipments Provide Relief For Georgia Livestock Farmers With no promise of immediate federal assistance to Georgia's drought-stricken farmers, state officials recently took action to secure hay for the state's livestock producers. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and Governor Joe Frank Harris worked with farmers and officials in mid-western states to arrange several shipments of donated and low cost hay to provide some relief for Georgia farmers. The first of the hay shipments approximately 50 tons donated by farmers in central Illinois, arrived last week via Air Force transport planes at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta. The hay was then trucked to the Atlanta State Farmers' Market where it was distributed to eligible beef and dairy producers the following day. To qualify for the hay, farmers were required to have a letter from their local county agent or local ASCS, FmHA or SCS office stating they were a dairy or beef cattle producer with less than a five day hay supply. Other hay shipments, some donated and some for sale, are expected in the near future. Commissioner Irvin said he was overwhelmed by the humanitarian spirit expressed by farmers across the nation. "They all deserve our heartfelt thanks," he said. In addition to efforts to bring hay into the state, Irvin has been pressing for immediate relief from Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was on hand to help load the first bales of hay. The Commissioner and other state officials have been coordinating efforts to have hay shipped from various parts of the country to provide feed for the state's drought-stricken livestock. Washington. "I believe we should try to use some of the resources we already have," said Irvin. The hay, donated by Illinois farmers, was loaded by prison inmates onto trucks headed for the Atlanta State Farmers' Market where the hay was distributed to eligible farmers the following morning. Warning To Cattle Farmers Cows that have been feeding on pastures and hay with a low protein content may develop scours (diarrhea which may lead to dehydration) if feed is changed immediately to 12 percent or greater protein. The hay expected in by train from Illinois will have a 12 percent or greater protein content. Producers are urged to mix the Illinois hay at least half and half with local hay for at least tea days to two weeks in order to acclimate the cows and avoid scours. Adequate water should be made available. Cows that develop scours may die from dehyration.
