FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture 7\ Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 27 Wednesday, July 2, 1986 Certified Seed Ensures Quality The Georgia Crop Improvement Association is an incorporated nonprofit organization of seed growers. Seed certification is the responsibility of the College of Agriculture, University of Georgia, with the Georgia Crop Improvement Association, designated as the agent to carry out the program. The purpose of seed certification is to make available to the public, through certification, high quality seeds of superior crop plant varieties grown and distributed to insure genetic purity and identity. Our guest columnist this week is Larry Spooner, president, Georgia Crop Improvement Association, P.O. Box 753, Dublin 31040. One advantage growers have in planting certified seed would be the known origin and performance of the seed. Certified seed are of a superior variety; they have been treated and approved by the Extension Service at one or more of the several Experiment Stations located over the state. Another advantage to the grower is that quality standards for certified seed are much higher than for non-certified seed. This is because the seed has to be conditioned and its purity and germination has to be tested before it can be issued the blue certification tag. There are four classes of certified seed: breeder seed, foundation white tag seed, registered purple tag seed, and certified blue tag seed, the seed that goes to the general farmer. In 1985 the Association issued over 2,800,000 tags for certified seed with a retail value of over $50 million. Every thing considered, "certified seed doesn't cost it pays". The seed are the basis of the crop and the crop can be no better than its base. For the most efficient production start with the best, plant certified seed. Celebrated as the birthday of the United States, July 4 is the anniversary of the Declaration of the Indepedence adopted by Congress on that date in 1776. Although the occasion was first observed in Philadelphia over 200 years ago, Congress did not declare it a legal, federal holiday until 1941. Church bells, bon fires and a 13 gun salute marked the first Independence Day celebration in Philadelphia, then the nation's capital. The founders of the new nation considered Independence Day an important occasion for rejoicing. John Adams, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, stated "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." As America has grown and prospered, the Fourth of July indeed has become one of the country's most important national observances. Americans continue to celebrate this patriotic occasion in a big way with picnics, parades, and fireworks in communities throughout the nation. Developing Improved Varieties Focus of Ga. Alfalfa Research During the early 1950's, Georgia had as much as 50,000 acres of alfalfa. But the attacks of the alfalfa weevil and the development of newer varieties of grass forages led many farmers to abandon alfalfa production. However, in recent years the crop has been making a slow comeback in Georgia, mostly for use as feed for horses and dairy cattle. "Acreage has increased about 3,000 acres each year since 1978," said Extension agronomist Joe Bouton. In 1977 there were about 5,000 acres of the legume in the state compared with approximately 30,000 acres this year. "Georgia's alfalfa acreage has increased, and I think we will see more of it," noted Bouton. "But it will be more of an evolution than a revolution." The legume has had limited success thus far due to the high acidity and high aluminum content of Georgia's soil, particularly in the Coastal Plain. "Alfalfa is extremely sensitive to the aluminum in the soil," Bouton explained. "It's just not economically feasible to lime or ammend the soil below the plow layer." Unless a more suitable variety is developed for Georgia, the crop may not reach widespread use. However, scientists at the Athens Experiment station are working to find such a variety that will be suitable for hay and pasture. Bouton and other scientists have been growing alfalfa in solutions containing the aluminum found in many types of Georgia soils. The goal is to develop a single cell that is more tolerant of aluminum. From this single cell a plant can be grown, and a new variety generated from the plant. The process is meticulous-a new plant variety often takes 12 to 15 years to develop. Alfalfa is a deep-rooted legume and, under ideal soil and weather conditions, its roots can penetrate as far as 30 feet. Although the crop is drought resistant, the roots cannot penetrate the hardpan layer of Georgia's soil in dry weather. Irrigation will improve yields substantially, but it is not feasible for most of the state's alfalfa farmers. However, the crop does have several advantages which may increase its popularity in the state. Since it is a deep-rooted perennial, the legume has many conservation benefits. Alfalfa also improves soil conditions by fixing nitrogen in the soil through its root system. Besides its use for grazing, silage and hay, the legume also is used to make feed pellets for goats, hamsters and other animals. And alfalfa sprouts are a popular topping for salads and sandwiches. One of the biggest problems with raising alfalfa for hay in Georgia is (Continued from Page 1) Georgia larmers submitted 7Q$31 adjpe^ of their land for : ;incjusio; n';;|a;i!*e::;^ rnent of ^grietilture vatiq a ';i:'J?&sefV&>-. with:; '93Bft|>efc;e;n acrea ge parked; ? ; 'loir-. ;{P8e: -. according to the Extension Ifer* vice; Otiier Cover crops will be planted on tie ^emaiiiing seven percent of tlie acreage. Keep Horses Cool During Summer Hot weather and its accompanying insects can make life miserable for horses and their owners. Although many owners can retreat indoors to the comforts of air conditioning, most horses have to endure the summer heat. Therefore, owners should take steps to provide some relief for their animals. Owners should make certain their horses have access to shade. If possible, pen them in the barn during the middle of the day to protect them from the scorching sun. Horses, such as Appaloosas, paint horses, and those with blaze faces and pink noses will sunburn. Applying zinc (Continued on Page 16) Special Equine Edition Sketch submitted by J. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 2, 1986 we aet letteu *-- arr Dear Editor When advertising in the Market Bulletin, folks often will call and say they want to buy what I have and will be out to pick it up, but they never show up. When other people call about the same item, I tell them it is already sold. This keeps me from selling what I have. I also wish that other Bulletin advertisers would state the price of their items in their ad. Then potential buyers would know whether or not they might be interested in purchasing the items. lla Kaye Johnson Route 3, Johnson Road Loganville, Georgia 30249 Hi iiilillillli If you have questions regarding this category, call Sonya Way 656-3727. If you would like applications or more information, please contact me at the address below. There will be a late registration fee after July 20. Mrs. Ivy Lockett 480 Ebenezer Church Road Fayetteville, Georgia 30214 404-487-2862 Dear Editor I was looking through some old Market Bulletins and noticed that someone wanted information on how and when to dig Irish potatoes. I thought I would share the method my family has used for years to dig Irish and sweet potatoes. Don't let the potatoes stay in the ground too long. When the skin begins to look rough and bumpy, it is time to dig them. We always dug our potatoes the week before the full moon, or at least three to four days before then. After harvesting the potatoes, put them in a dry place. We always put them on the gorund under the house or in the smoke house, but you can put them anywhere they will stay dry. We also banked our sweet potatoes, or put them in the utility house on lots of pine straw. If you have a lot of them, they keep better in the winter if you bank them. Also, try this method to keep onions. Pull them up when the tops fall over, and let the tops stay on until they dry. It's better to pull them up the week before the full moon if you can. We've been able to keep onions all year. Mrs. Mamie R. Sanders P.O. Hay Buying Tips In some farming operations it is more economical to buy hay than to grow and harvest it. If this is the case, remember these important purchasing tips: "There is no standard weight for a bale of hay. The more loosely it is baled, the less you get. For best results, purchase bales by the ton so you know exactly how many pounds you are buying. Remember, if hay is baled with too much moisture, it will mold. Such hay is bad for livestock. Hay that is too wet when stored also can ignite by spontaneous combustion. Before purchasing hay, randomly select a bale and ask if you can break it open. If the seller is reluctant to comply with your request, be wary. ^v^^^^j'i-yi-^^^-^-^^^^.':-:-:---:.-:-^-:-:-:''^:';-::--::''-:::':-- If you have questions regarding this category, call Ella Beach 656-3727. All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. First ad must be accompanied by report which will be returned if requested. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Seed Division of the Department of Agriculture, 656-3635. Certi.
