They usually tell me that positive I relationships exist f between the college and its faculty, I students and alumni. It is that positive ] relationship which 11 hope to build on j in an image study now underway which will determine how ABAC is really perceived by Our guest columnist this week is Wayne C. Those publics will include employers who hire our graduates, the community, and high school counselors who advise students on where to "spend their col- lege careers. ABAC has a good academic reputation, and I hope we will make it even more prominent in the future. The number one mission of this institution is teaching, and we have to concentrate on quality teaching every single day. But, we have to be a service institution as well. Businesses, farms, and the community are looking to ABAC for services, and we will continue to provide that quality service to our various constituencies. Right now, my number one goal for ABAC is to somehow stop the decline in enrollment. Once we have the results from our image study, we will develop a marketing plan which will emphasize the strengths of the school. This will take some time. It will not be an overnight process, but we have a great base to build on. The short-range prediction for enrollment in higher education is not a bright one. I suspect there will be fewer people going into agriculture. What we must do is position programs so students realize there are jobs available in the agricultural field. The emphasis primarily will be (Continued on Page 12) Select Licensed Exterminator To Control Termite Problems Secretary of Agriculture Richard E. Many consumers panic when they discover termite infestation and, although the problem certainly demands attention, time is on the homeowner's side. While the tiny insects can cause hundreds of dollars of damage, a well-established colony of 60,000 workers eats only a small amount of wood each day. Therefore, consumers should not rush into choosing a pest control company. Termites are detected more easily by homeowners in the spring when the insects leave their nest to form a new colony. During this period they have wings and dark-colored bodies and are visible as a distinctive flying swarm. Homeowners often confuse swarming termites with winged ants. Adult termites have a broad waist, two pairs of equally sized wings, round heads and antennae that are not elbowed. Flying ants have a pinched waistline (like an hour glass), hind wings smaller and shorter than their front wings, oval or heartshaped heads, and elbowed antennae. However, termites live for only a day or two in open air and then lose their wings. Another sign of infestation is the presence of mud tubing or tunnels built from the ground to the building structure. These structures are necessary for the termites since they do not work in open air. When termites are discovered, consumers are advised to seek assistance from a reliable pest control company. Each structural pest control company in the state is licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and is required to have a designated certified operator to supervise pesticide application. The Department regulates the performance of the companies through periodic inspections, and operators are tested to assure competency. These checks ensure that state treatment requirements and contract (Continued on Page 12) Preserve Summer Bounty At Canning Facilities The cannery, located at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market in Forest Park, is scheduled to open July 8. Landowners Respond To Conservation Program According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, a total of 51,101 acres of highly erodible cropland on 910 Georgia farms was approved tentatively for planting in trees under the Conservation Reserve Program during the recently completed second sign up period. In the initial sign up earlier this year, 32,881 acres were approved in Georgia, which accounted for 30 percent of the acreage alloted nationwide. A third sign up period is being scheduled, probably for late summer or early fall, but the exact date has not been determined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before signing up for the program, landowners must meet eligibility requirements. Those owners interested in the program should contact their nearest forestry office for a recently published brochure on the subject. through Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The facility will be closed on Sunday and Monday.
