FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 23 Wednesday, June 4, 1986 Dairy Farmers Honored in June This week, Georgia's and America's dairy farm families began the celebration of June Dairy Monih for the 50th time. Since the creation of June Dairy Month in 1936, this annual observance has grown to become the single largest food promotion in the country. But there have been many changes in the dairy industry during that time. Some 30 years ago, there were almost two million dairy farms in Our guest columnist this week is Harry L Stanley, state manager, American Dairy Association of Georgia, 1777 Phoenix 3arkway, Suite 101, Atlanta 30349._____ the United States. Today 842 dairy Farms in Georgia, along with less than 220,000 nationwide, supply milk and milk products to meet the needs of an increasing U.S. population, seeking the goodness and nutri:ion of quality dairy foods. Dairy farmers have increased the size of their dairy herds, made more effective use of breeding and feeding :echniques, adapted computer :echnology, and made shifts in production to meet these changes in :onsumer demand. The dairy farmer's financial comnitment has grown through the fears, too. Today, the dairy farmer las an average investment of more han $500,000 in his land, equipnent, buildings and animals. In the past 50 years, the manner in which milk is marketed also has changed. Many dairy farmers used :o sell their products directly from :he farm or in the local community, ro meet today's growing demands, milk is processed in plants that may 3e many miles from the actual selling point. (Continued on Page 10) Ag Department Program Keeps Georgia Free of Hog Cholera Hog cholera, a highly contagious and deadly swine disease, has been eliminated in our state, and subsequently in the United States, largely as a result of prevention programs like that in operation at the Georgia Department of Agriculture. As with many programs involving animal health and consumer safety, hog cholera control is a cooperative effort of the Department's divisions of animal industry and general field inspection forces. Up until the 1970's, hog cholera cost Georgia millions of dollars, according to Dr. John Cobb, assistant commissioner for animal industry. Georgia was the first state to eliminate hog cholera. The Department's control measures, such as separating slaughter pigs and feeder/breeder pigs at sales, along with the state law against feeding garbage to swine were used as models for other states in eradicating the disease nationwide. The symptoms of hog cholera, including diarrhea and staggered gait, are so similar to other swine diseases that a definite determination cannot be made without a complete diagnosis, including postmortem examination and laboratory confirmation, Cobb explained. Although it is not transmissible to humans, the hog cholera virus can infect swine herds through the air, physical contact with affected swine or pigs consuming infected pork products. The virus can remain dormant for years in frozen meat, Cobb pointed out. This is one reason for the law against feeding garbage containing meat products to pigs. (Continued on Page 10) In the past, hog cholera threatened Georgia's $217 million a year pork industry. But thanks to the Georgia Department of Agriculture's eradication program, the state today remains free of this dreaded disease. Not only was Georgia the first state to eliminate the disease, but its program has served as a model for other states in eradicating the disease nationwide. NASDA Board Takes Lead in Reducing Trade Barriers Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recently met in Ottawa, Ontario with ministers of agriculture from all 14 Canadian provinces. The meeting focused on agricultural trade relations between the U.S. and Canada. As part of the visit, Canada's top agricultural official, Minister of Agriculture John Wise, hosted a dinner for the NASDA Board. The U.S. Department of Agriculture asked NASDA to take the lead in opening dialogue with the Canadians with the goal of reducing trade barriers across the U.S.-Canadian Border. "Both Canada and the U.S. will benefit from more free trade of agricultural products," Irvin said. "U.S. agricultural exports have dropped steadily for five years, and if we are going to turn that around, we need to start with our neighbors." Irvin will take office as president of NASDA before the trade talks continue this October, and he says he will invite the Canadian agricultural leaders to Atlanta. Both NASDA and the Canadians are working on an agenda for the fall meeting. Some of the commodities discussed in the meeting were timber, pork, potatoes, honeybees and blueberries.
