FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 20 Wednesday, May 14, 1986 Poultry Careers Offer Promise If you are approaching college age and have not decided on a career, let me urge you to consider career options in the poultry industry. Opportunities for rewarding careers in this dynamic food in- dustry and its related fields have never been better. A bachelor of science degree in poultry science will prepare you to assume a position of responsibility in one of the many segments of this rapidly growing agri-business enterprise and what an industry it is! Poultry production was the first agricultural enterprise to become industrialized, with Georgia leading the way during the time of its most Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Henry L. Fuller, acting chairman, Poultry Science Division, College of Agriculture, University of Georgia, Athens 30602. rapid growth. The value of poultry and eggs produced on Georgia farms alone exceeds $1.25 billion dollars each year with broilers contributing two-thirds of that amount or $800 million. More than one-third of Georgia's total cash farm receipts come from the sale of poultry and eggs. In the U.S., Georgia is second only to Arkansas in broiler production and second only to California in commercial egg production. Consequently, the state leads the nation in total income from poultry. The employment outlook for poultry scientists is expanding continuously due to growth and diversification of the poultry industry and the shortage of well trained personnel. The poultry industry is unique in the various types of employment it offers because a variety of jobs, from processing to marketing, may be contained in an individual poultry firm. This provides an interesting variety of employment opportunities. It is not unusual for graduates to move from one phase of the company's operation to another, according to their wishes and particular suitability. The University of Georgia has 10 to 15 students graduate with a baccalaureate degree in poultry science each year more than any other school in the country. All are placed (Continued on Page 12] 09 consumer line I currently am enrolled in a well-known weight-loss program. But, it seems that instead of losing weight, I have gained a pound or two. I think something is wrong with their scales. Are these scales certified? The program you are enrolled in is using scales that have been certified by the Georgia Department of Agricuture. The next time you are there, look, and you will see a green and white sticker indicating the last day of inspec- tion. It is not unusual to gain a pound or two while going through a weight loss regimen, as your weight usually shifts during this initial weight loss period. Hang in there. *** I would like to have my garden soil tested before I start planting. Where can I get this test done? You should call your county agent for soil information. *** How do I obtain a raincheck on advertised specials at grocery stores? You should ask for one. Store clerks are not required to offer you a rain- check, although some do. The raincheck will permit you to purchase the advertised item at the advertised price within 10 days of the original offering date. However, if the advertisement states "no raincheck," the store does not have to provide one for you. . * * *. ... .. .. ... .,,... ....-__ I have collected seed from my marigold plants. Should I store them in an air tight container? The best way to keep your seed is to make sure they are thoroughly dried, place them into a white envelope and store them in a cool dry place for the winter. Select Farm Fencing With Proper Purpose In Mind Whether they are used to protect or divide property, to confine livestock, or to improve the appearance of the land, fences are essential to a farming operation. Since fences can represent a sizable investment, they should be carefully planned, constructed and maintained in order to serve their intended purpose. The most common types of farm fences are board, barbed wire, woven wire, cable mesh, hightensile, electric or a combination of any of these. When selecting fencing, the basic factors to consider are the intended use, construction cost, and the builder's or land owner's preference. See table 1 (page 12) for general comparisons to use when determining the proper fence to construct. Woven wire and barbed wire often are used for enclosing productive farm land. Marginally productive cropland usually is fenced with less expensive materials, such as one or two strands of barbed wire. Board fences sometimes are used to confine livestock and are popular on horse farms. These fences often are painted white or whitewashed and can be attractive as well as functional. But they are more expensive to construct than many wire fences. This fact, along with high maintenance, makes board fences impractical or undesirable for many operations. Woven wire fences, or a combination of woven wire and barbed wire, generally are used for confining livestock. When fencing cattle and horses, a single barbed wire at the top will deter animals from jumping over and mashing down the fence. Sheep are confined best by woven wire fencing since barbed wire alone may tear fleece. For protection of sheep, a woven wire fence with strands of barbed wire on top and bottom is best. The wire at the top will deter dogs from jumping over the fence and the apron along the bottom will prevent predators from burrowing beneath the fence. Electric fencing often is used for livestock confinement and is convenient for temporary use where more permanent fencing would be expensive or undesirable. Permanent electric fences also can be built at a cost of about half that of comparable barbed or woven wire fences. In addition to lower construction costs, they are inexpensive to operate, easy to move, and can be used to protect livestock and poultry from predators. However, keep in mind that electric fences can be dangerous and livestock will require training before they become used to the fencing. , Although a fence may be suited for a particular use, its cost may make it undesirable for that purpose. For example, mesh wire fences are strong and provide safety for animals, but (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 14, 1986 Farm employment If you have questions regarding this category, call Sonya Way 656-3727.
