FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Comm/ss/oner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 18 Wednesday, April 30, 1986 Legislation Expected to Assure Sweeter Vidalia Onion Harvest ./ofJ?arm Land ^ of - ^ Harvest of Georgia's Vidalia sweet onions currently is underway and producers anticipate a good crop. Although recent dry weather conditions and cold temperatures have delayed harvest from a week to 10 days, crop quality is expected to range from good to excellent. Consumers should be able to select from a good distribution of sizes with 60 to 70 percent jumbos. According to Toombs County Ex- tension agent Rick Hartley, his county has been without rain the past six weeks and growers have relied heavily on irrigation. While the onions were growing well in early March, the recent cold spell Jias slowed growth. Last year, severe weather conditions reduced the value of Georgia's sweet onion crop to $18 million. But the value of the 1986 crop is expected to be $30 to $35 million based on reported plantings of 5500 acres. Marketing improprieties which plagued past Vidalia onion harvests should be reduced this year with enforcement of the new onion law. Mulches Help Minimize Garden Chores Even the most devoted gardener often dreads the tasks of watering and weeding the vegetable patch. But these chores can be minimized by mulching the garden area. Mulch is nothing more than a layer of organic or inorganic material which is spread on the soil surface. While mulching offers several advantages conserving soil moisture is probably the greatest. Mulch keeps soil moisture from evaporating by protecting it from the direct effects of wind and hot sun. It particularly is beneficial during the inevitable dry spells which frequently occur in Georgia from April through November. In addition, mulches cushion the soil from falling rain, reducing compaction. Mulches often have been referred to as "the lazy gardener's hoe" since they can help reduce the neverending chore of weeding flowers and vegetables. Most mulching materials block sunlight and reduce seed germination and growth of weeds. Even stubborn weeds that force their way through are easily removed from mulched soil. At harvest time, mulch helps cushion ripening vegetables and keeps them clean and dry. As an added bonus, organic mulches can be tilled into the soil at the end of the season to further improve soil structure and fertility. There are about as many mulching materials as there are benefits. These generally fall into one of two categories organic (pine bark, straw, leaves, etc.) and inorganic (aluminum foil, plastic). Organic materials should be applied after plants are well established (Continued on Page 12) Pick Your Own Strawberries Page 10 Passed earlier this year, the law gives the Georgia Department of agriculture the means to enforce truthful labeling of Vidalia onions. In addition, the legislation is designed to prevent onions grown outside the designated area from being falsely advertised or mislabeled. "We hope mislabeling problems will be minimal in 1986," stressed Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "We feel confident that stricter labeling requirements and stronger penalties will deter some of the problems encountered with past onion crops." Consumers are urged to read labels cargfully^tq. be JaT^gJS_thY BB. fiet- ^ genuine Vmaliaomons. By law the Vidalia name can be used only to describe yellow granex onions grown in the designated growing area by registered growers. The use of the term "Vidalia type" onions is strictly illegal. {Continued on Page 12) National Awards Honor Conservation Efforts A national soil and water conservation awards program is being sponsored by the National Endowment for Soil and Water Conservation and the DuPont Company to identify and honor farmers and ranchers demonstrating practical and innovative ways to conserve soil and water in their operations. The top conservation farmer/rancher will be selected from each state by committees of farm, conservation and government leaders. An Endowment Technical Advisory Committee will review the conservation work of the state winners and select up to 10 national finalists on the basis of their accomplishments in soil and water resource management and pollution abatement. National finalists and their spouses will receive an expense-paid trip to attend a national awards ceremony this fall. Three national winners, selected from among the finalists, will receive $1000 each. For application forms and additional information, contact F. Graham Liles Jr., State Coordinator, P.O. Do you have information on the new Family Farm and the Agribusiness Loan Programs available through the Georgia Development Authority (GDA)? The new Family Farm Program may be used by individual farmers to purchase agricultural property. A special program helps young or first time farmers obtain loans to buy farmland. The Agribusiness Loan Program makes funds available to small Georgia agribusinessmen for the purchase of qualified property, both real and personal. For additional information on these programs, contact your local lending institution or GDA at (404) 656-7547. Is there anything that will kill nut grass? I have about an acre that is covered with it. This weed may be controlled with Roundup, according to our horticulturist. It is best to spray in the spring, and since nut grass has underground tubers, it may be necessary to apply several times to kill it completely. Read and follow label directions carefully. While purchasing gas, I asked the cashier if they sold motor oil, because I did not see any on display in the store. The clerk reached under the counter and gave me a quart. When I went outside and opened it, the silver plastic seal was missing, and the oil was rust in color. Needless to say, I didn't use it. Can your department do anything about this? We sent an inspector to the station to collect samples of the motor oil. He took the sample to our lab in Forest Park. All samples were sealed and from the color, the oil appeared to be new. We are sending you a copy of the viscosity test results.
