FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 17 Wednesday, April 23, 1986 Beget S0C4P Ga. Consumers Quality. It's an element worth striving for. Whether the topic is lifestyle, entertainment, merchandise or service, quality rates a "must" from the consumers of today. The Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business (SOCAP) plays an integral role in seeing that consumers find the quality they seek. Comprised of Consumer Affairs managers from across corporate America, the organization helps its members improve their company's policies, products and services. _t ._ In 1974, fewer than 100 U.S. corporations could claim a designated function for Consumer Affairs. Now, Our guest columnist this week is Roger H. Nunley, president, Georgia Chapter, Society of Consumer Affairs for Professionals in Business, P.O. Box 1734, Atlanta 30303. just 12 years later, more than 1,500 companies have active programs managed by a Consumer Affairs professional. Why the sudden increase? Because over the past decade consumers have made themselves heard. And companies have realized that, by listening and responding, they can ultimately increase consumer confidence and sales. People who are exposed to information often tell their friends and neighbors what they have learned. One study conducted by Technical Assistance Research Programs, Inc. (TARP) for The Coca-Cola Company helps to illustrate the value of "wordof-mouth." TARP learned that consumers who have a good experience with a company will tell an average of five other people, some of whom will become new customers. But the impact doubles when the consumer has a bad experience. Then the typical "man on the street" will tell nine or ten other people, and about (Continued on Page 13) National Consumers Week April 20-26, 1986 See page 11 for more consumer news }^^s^e^'^^r^:" . . ^ ;:';|ojl growers andi^paiGker^v'^S;;; registration applicatipns ap* proved last week when tiie registration period required under the new Vidalia (3nion Act ended fofe thfe 19&6 :;Georgia^De;par^N; ment of that )?- packers,';-; /' ';. Farmers or their family members were referred to at least a dozen agencies which helped them locate jobs, obtain loans, get medical treatment, receive legal assistance and numerous other services. More than 25 percent of the callers have been referred to the Georgia Department of Labor for assistance in locating non-farm employment. One farmer reports that he will be able to retain his home after being placed in a job by the Labor Department placement service. A 65-year-old farmer visited the hotline office and reported he is losing his farm, and would like small engine repair training in order to support himself and his invalid wife. He currently is being trained free of charge in the Older Workers Program, and is virtually assured of a job after his studies are complete. Another South Georgia farmer, a Vietnam veteran, called to report that the Farmers Home Administration was foreclosing on his farm. He needed an alternative income, and the Labor Department reports that hg_began working in a new job While many of the callers are seeking employment other than farming, there are many more who will continue to farm with a little help. A farmer in Southwest Georgia was able to continue operation of her farm by renting it to her son. In doing so, financing from a commercial bank was available which covered (Continued on Page 16) Maintaining Quality Water Supply Requires Treatment and Care Approximately 1.5 million Georgians obtain their drinking water from underground sources, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resource's Environmental Protection Division. But water is not pure just because it is underground. Groundwater is subject to contamination the same as lakes, rivers and streams. "Most people make the assump- tion that water is pure just because it is clear," noted Tony Pyle, assistant coordinator of the Georgia Water and Waste Water Institute in Carrollton. "You can see what happens to water on the surface, but you often can't tell what happens to ground- water." For instance, in Georgia some pollution has shown up in groundwater located near dumps and landfills. Septic tanks also have posed problems for individual well owners. "Septic tanks are always located uphill and therefore have the potential for contamination," said Pyle. In the United States, one of the most common sources of groundwater contamination is nitrates. These compounds get into the water by such means as animal wastes, fertilizers and industrial wastes. The areas having the most trouble with nitrate contamination are the midwestern states with large scale crop production and intensive livestock feeding operations. The sandy soil and shallow aquafers (water-bearing beds of permeable rock, sand or gravel), along with the widespread use of fertilizers, make this region more prone to nitrate contamination. Unlike the Midwest, Georgia has had little problem with nitrates thus far. But the increased use of irrigation, resulting in soil leaching, could one day lead to a nitrate problem. Sometimes groundwater con- tamination is the result of improper well construction or carelessness and neglect by the well owner. Ac- cording to Haskell Stratton, supervising sanitarian for Hall County, the most common problem he has to face is people not protecting their wells from surface water. John Fernstrom of the EPD's groundwater pro- gram agreed. "When we find a pro- blem with an individual well, particularly one that has been dug or bored, it usually is not protected at the surface or is not properly constructed." At present there are no state regulations governing individual water wells. However, 39 counties have established their own regulations and permit requirements for individual wells. "In our county, a sanitarian has to inspect a well before he can take a sample," noted Sratton. For instance, in Hall County a bored or dug (Continued on Page 16) What's Inside Georgia Cooking ...... page 5 Livestock Clip &Save ........ page 7 Helping - Each Other......... page 9 Consumer Features.......... page 11 Planting Chart....... page 13 Special Handicrafts .... page 14,15 Bulletin Calendar.... page 15 Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 23, 1986 It you have questions regarding this category, call Sonya Way 656-3727. L C. Bonds, Box 1203, Duluth 30136. r Helping 'Each Other Dear Editor: A while back a couple of your readers were inquiring about the origin of the greeting "Christmas gift." I grew up in Hiawassee and remember the term being used as a greeting at Christmas time. I do not remember hearing it used after the mid-thirties. Another of your readers mentioned the term "black Dutch." I also heard my mother use this when I was young and asked her what it meant. She explained that most immigrants from Holland were blond, fair-skinned and of a mild temperament, but some were darker skinned with dark hair and more or less aggressive or over-bearing. Through her mother we were descended from the latter type, known as "black Dutch." In 1973 I visited Holland and thought of this but to me the difference was not noticeable. Alva G. Barrett 4700 51st Place, SW Seattle, Washington 98116 Dear Editor The Cobb County Extension Service is looking for a volunteer leader, knowledgeable in sheep production, to work with the 4-H lamb project club. We hope to have monthly meetings and need someone to work with the group from May to September. We would particularly like to have a Cobb County resident. Judy Wojcik 10 East Park Square Suite 330 Cobb Administration Building Marietta, Georgia 30060 404-429-3335 Dear Editor I need two iron side bed rails with a button to fit an old * fashioned iron headboard and base. If anyone has any of these rails or knows where I can get a set, please write me or call me. Route 2, Box 6 Hiawassee, Georgia 30546 404-896-2853 Dear Editor I am looking for an old-timey, 12 quart, hand-cranked ice freezer. If anyone knows where one can be located, please let me know. Mrs. A.L. Sawyer 3611 Parr Road Albany, Georgia 31705 Dear Editor We have a hummingbird feeder, but yellow jackets have i been attracted to the sugar water in it We would like to know what we can put on the feeder which will discourage the yellow jackets but will not keep the hummingbirds from drinking water from it.
