FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 16 Wednesday, April 16, 1986 Farm Front Beef Promotion An industry-proposed beef promotion and research order will be considered in a producer referendum next year, but the U. S. Department of Agriculture wants to receive public comments now. A nationwide check-off of $1 per head could begin as early as September, and funds would be used for research on the benefits of beef consumption and an advertising campaign to prohiote beef products. Public comments =:' Ajiril 28 to: '< JRahpli Three Georgians will become grassroots ambassadors as International 4-H Youth Exchange (1FYE) delegates, representing Georgia and the United States. The IFYEs (1-r) include Deanne Wood, Commerce, IFYE to Norway; Ken Jones, Canton, delegate to Italy; and Suzanne Pyron, Fayetteville, who will go to the Netherlands. They will depart July 15 and return December 5. The exchange is supported by the Georgia 4-H Foundation and arranged by National 4-H Council. Livestock Industry Benefits From Ag Department Programs Although Georgia's livestock producers have experienced many ups and downs, the state's livestock industry has grown steadily in impor- tance to the state's economy. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has a number of programs designed to benefit livestock producers, dealers and consumers. The services range from protecting the quality of seed and feed grains to aggressively marketing agricultural products at home and overseas. Within the Animal Industry Division, Department employees battle livestock diseases, enforce branding laws, maintain scientific laboratories, promote equine development, inspect meat processing plants and protect milk quality. One of the most important areas of protection for local producers and buyers alike is the livestock grading and reporting service. A cooperative effort of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the USDA, the program's main purpose is to ensure the orderly marketing and accurate, unbiased reporting of the sale prices of cattle, swine and other livestock products. A chief priority for Agriculture commissioner Tommy Irvin has been to continually upgrade the quality of the livestock grading and reporting program while keeping cost to a minimum. Livestock prices, trends, supplies and market conditions are reported at 24 Georgia livestock auction markets and 16 swine marketing and grading stations. One Department inspector will report on sales of as many a 1500 cows in a single day. Last year in the North Georgia area there were 710,000 head of cattle and 606,000 hogs sold at auction. There also were direct sales of 175,000 swine and 49,000 head of cattle reported. Slaughter swine grading totaled 360,000 while feeder pigs numbered 81,000. All this classifying, grading and reporting was accomplished by only 11 Department specialists. The livestock specialists, all trained and certified by USDA, report prices, trends, supplies, and conditions to the Georgia Livestock Market News Office in Thomasville. This report is either mailed or wired to buyers, packers, news media, government agencies and academic institutions. The Georgia Department of Agriculture also provides a toll-free telephone line, 1-800-342-1440, at the Livestock Market News Service office, with the latest information on livestock prices and market conditions 24 hours a day. Accurate reporting of livestock prices is vitally important to every sector of the agricultural commodities and future markets. However the real benefit to Georgia producers and consumers is the increase in consistency and quality of beef and pork, according to Ernest Morgan, editor of the Georgia Livestock Market News. He explained that wherever there is a stable marketing and reporting system, there is a corresponding yearly increase in product quality. Georgia's program has been operating since 1958 and has served as a model for other states. A major advantage of the Department's swine grading program is (Continued on Page 12} 09 consumer line . . . Q: I was driving along the highway and saw regular, unleaded gas advertised for 79.9 cents. However, after I exited the highway and drove into the station, I discovered that this was the "cash" price of the gas. I had intended to charge the gas, but changed my mind after I saw that the credit price was 10 cents higher. Is it legal to charge different prices for cash and credit? A: Yes, it is. However, the station illegally posted the prices. If a station is charging different prices for cash and credit gas, and the price is posted on highway, street, or curb signs, the signs must show the credit and cash price. The words "credit" and "cash," as well as the price numbers, must be of equal size on the sign. We sent an inspeclui uul In cheek this station's advertising practices. * Q: My daughter is allergic to sulfites and I want to make sure that the food products I use at home do not contain this ingredient. Where can I obtain a sulfite testing kit? A: If you will call our toll-free number (listed below), we will provide you with the name and tollfree number of a company that has such kits available. For answers and action on areas regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, call the Consumer Services Office at our toll-free number, 1-800-282-5852 statewide, or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645.
