FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 12 Wednesday, March 19, 1986 National Agriculture Week TMKHOJ fhuw March 16 - 22 Ag Day Contest Winners FIRST PLACE ADULT SKETCH Farming Vital To Our Economy Since Governor Joe Frank Harris has proclaimed March 20 as "Agriculture Day" in Georgia, I think it is appropriate that we take time to recognize all the contribu- tions of our state's farmers and the contributions of agribusiness to Georgia's eco- nomy. The theme for II this year's celebra- | tion is "Agricul- I ture: Building Jobs __ _ For Georgians." Since agriculture and related in- dustries generate $18 billion to our state's economy annually, this is par- ticularly approprite. Almost everyone is aware of the economic plight of our nation's farmers. But many people are not fully aware of the tremendous im- pact agriculture has on many other industries. In Georgia, 28 percent of our workforce depends on agriculture. Industries such as processing, manufacturing and transportation have prospered from the $2 billion annual growth rate Georgia's agribusiness sector has experienced during the last few years. Currently, Georgia is enjoying a period of strong economic growth and the problems of agriculture have not had a serious impact on the state's overall economy. But this may not be true for long. If our farmers go out of business, many other in- dustries will suffer as well. When farmers are forced out of business, the impact of the loss is felt far beyond the producers to agribusinesses and consumers. With the resulting loss of agriculture- related jobs, many rural com- munities may suffer dramatically. (Continued on Page 16) Farmers cannot neglect their livestock regardless of the weather, explained Adis Olson of Augusta who submitted the winning entry in the adult category of the sketch contest. According to Olson, a producer who puts a little extra time and effort into caring for his stock will be rewarded with better yields. See pages 8 and 9 for other contest winners. Farm Front FmHA Operating Loans Farmers Home Administration funds for 1986 operating loans in Georgia and 13 other states were depleted two weeks ago, but $700 million in federal funds were approved for the lending agency last week. Another $50 million was approved for a program that guarantees operating loans to farmers. States will be granted funds on a day to day basis, depending on the value of loans they have approved. Participants Make Contest A Success Hundreds of essays, sketches, and photographs were submitted in the 1986 Agriculture Day Contest. As you can see by the winning entries featured in this week's Market Bulletin, Georgians have no shortage of talent. We would like to express our appreciation to each individual who took the time and effort to enter our fourth annual contest. In addition, we especially would like to thank the teachers who involved their students in the contest. The sponsors of this annual event deserve a special note of thanks. The Georgia Agribusiness Council, the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Progressive Farmer are commended for their continued support and generosity in providing the $400 in prize money for this annual event. Tobacco Legislation Approved by House Tobacco legislation, pending since last December, was approved recently by the U.S. House of Representatives and is expected to be considered soon by the Senate, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The legislation is needed by tobacco farmers to help save their price support and production control program. The legislation would aid growers by providing for a domestic tobacco company buy-out of the almost 750 million pounds of flue-cured tobacco now held under government loan, for which producers now are responsible. It also would provide that future assessments, to cover the cost of any tobacco going under loan, be equally shared by growers. In addition the legislation would promote increased sales of U.S. tobacco in the world market by lowering price supports to make U.S. tobacco more competitive in world trade. If this bill does not pass, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the 1986 grower assessment will be 32 cents per pound, up from 25 cents last year. ^^^''"^""^^^ SPECIAL HANDICRAFT EDITION INSIDE Georgia Cooking ........ page 5 Ag Day Contest Winners .... pages 8 & 9 Helping Each Other..... page 11 Handicraft Ads ........... page 15 -^-. !^^^?^.-^?j Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, March 19, 1986 Farm employment If you have questions regarding this category, call Sonya Way 656-3727.
