FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 8 Wednesday, February 27, 1985 Fted Black Americans Aid Agriculture February is recognized as Black History month. For this reason, it is appropriate to share the untold story of the many significant contributions black Americans have made to the agricultural process. Blacks have been a part of agriculture and the agrarian societies since the discovery of America. In an attempt to provide a greater understanding of their contributions, the following will unfold a chronological capsule of selected events and milestones centering on black Americans in agriculture. Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Fred Harrison, Jr., Administrator/Associate Director of the Fort Valley State College Cooperative Extension Program, P.O. Box 4061, Fort Valley 31030. 1833 Although it remains questionable whether or not Cyrus McCormick invented the first wheat harvester, he is historically credited with this invention. Jo Anderson, a black slave and trusted helper, worked ardently with McCormick while developing the reaper for harvesting wheat. 1834 Henry Blair, a black man from Maryland, received a patent for a corn harvester. But in 1858, he was stripped of this invention when the attorney general ruled that since Blair was a slave and not a citizen, the government could not enter into an agreement with him. 1846 Equally inventive was Norbert Rillieux, a black man from New Orleans who revolutionized the sugar refining industry in Europe and America by perfecting a vacuum evaporation pan used in the refining process. 1860 - As a direct result of first inventions of the agricultural revolution', the south led the nation in the production of farm products. The states with the largest number of slave holders were the same states that led in the production of cotton. By 1860, the Southern states were producing 5,387,000 bales of cotton annually. Blacks in four states, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Georgia were responsible for the production of better than 65 percent of the annual crop. The next era of the development of American agriculture was marked by education and legislation which focused on the development of skills, research and organization. (Continued on Page 12) Georgia Egg Production Horse Edition As Georgia has grown and progressed through the years, so has its egg industry. The business has evolved from small individual flocks, popular until the 1940's, to a modern, automated industry. Based on an income of almost $280 million from the sale of eggs in 1983, Georgia currently ranks second in the nation in egg production. The special horse edition of the FARMERS AND CON- SUMERS MARKET BULLETIN is scheduled for April 3. This issue will in- clude notices for horse shows in April, May and June, as well as, at stud notices, boar- ding facilities, and miscellaneous equine equip- ment. Deadline for the edi- tion is March 20. If your organization has a show scheduled for April, May or June, submit your an- nouncement, not to exceed 30 words, by March 20. Deadline for at stud, boarding f anilities and miscellaneous equine equip- ment is also March 20. Review Tornado Safety Rules Before Severe Weather Arrives Tornadoes can strike Georgia any time of the year, but they occur most often in the spring, particularly during April. Although tornadoes cannot be prevented, there are ways to reduce their threat to human life. With this in mind, February 24-March 2 has been proclaimed Tornado Awareness Week in Georgia. During this time, Georgians are encouraged to review safety measures before tornado season arrives. A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air which extends toward the ground from the base of a large thundercloud. The winds rotate counterclockwise within the column Tornado Awareness Week February 24-March 2 at speeds varying from 100 to 300 miles per hour. This creates a funnel which can be seen when the air column picks up surface dirt and debris. Funnels normally appear as gray to black, but they may appear as blue, green, orange/red or white, depending on the lighting, time of day and the type of debris picked up from surface. Since tornadoes usually form on the backside of a thunderstorm, the funnel is sometimes embedded in rainfall and is barely visible. Most tornadoes come from the southwest and move in a northeasterly direction. A tornado's path can range from a few dozen yards to more than a mile wide. The path length can vary from less than a mile to more than 100 miles. The majority of these storms travel from 35 to 45 miles per hour. An approaching tornado sounds much like a roaring airplane or a rumbling freight train. The National Weather Service monitors conditions which may lead to the formation of tornadoes. When severe weather threatens, the Service issues one of two general notices, a watch and a warning. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornado development. It does not mean a tornado has been spotted or that one is close at hand. Stay alert for changing weather conditions if a watch is posted for your area. Keep tuned to a radio or television station that gives frequent weather bulletins. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado actually has been sighted (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 27,1985 Farm employment It you have questions regarding this category, call Edna Hollandsworth 656-3727.
