FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 51 Wednesday, December 18, 1985 Department Monitors Quality Mountain Station Of Antifreeze and Kerosene Serves North Ga. Through its research and demonstration programs, the Georgia Mountain Branch Experiment Station, located near Blairsville, serves the agricultural needs of the people of the mountain counties and surrounding areas. In carrying out its objectives, the station staff supports projects of the research scientists from the main stations (Athens, Griffin, Tifton) on a day-to-day basis and maintains all facilities and equipment. Extension Service specialists headquartered at the Mountain Station demonstrate the findings of researchers on an applied basis. Our guest columnist this week is J. W. Dobson, superintendent, Georgia Mountain Branch Experiment Station, UGA College of Agriculture, Route 1, Box 1005, Blairsville 30512. The branch station is an "ambassador" of the University of Georgia with its almost daily contact with the people it serves. It allows our citizens to see firsthand the latest advances in agriculture through individual and group visits, and planned field days. In 1985 over 350 people with diverse interests registered for the "University Bicentennial Field Day" and over 100 attended the Mountain Beef Cattle Field Day. Hundreds of requests for information are answered by phone or letter. The Mountain Station programs are directed toward small farmers and intensified agriculture. The research and demonstration projects include apples and small fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, Christmas trees, forages, grain crops, beef cattle, and swine. Our cold winters enable breeders to evaluate genetic plant materials for cold tolerance and in contrast, the pleasant summer temperatures with normally good rainfall distribution offer an excellent environment for maximum yield studies. The Tennessee Valley Authority helps support many of our programs (Continued on Page 12) As energy costs have risen in recent years, kerosene-fueled space heaters have become more popular to heat homes during the winter months. The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Fuel and Measures Division regulates kerosene used in heaters and lamps to insure consumers the fuel is safe and effective. The Department tests about 500 samples each year for color, flashpoint, sulfur content and end point. The color of kerosene should be close to the color of tap water, but can have a slight pink or light blue tint. Sulfur content is important because if it is too high, sulfur dioxides, which are harmful to breathe, can be emitted into the air. Flashpoint and endpoint determine the heat levels needed for the kerosene to fuel a heater or lamp without catching fire. Kerosene is sold at many gasoline stations across the state, and the law requires the product name, grade and price to be clearly labeled on the pump. The Department recommends consumers use IK kerosene in unvented heaters because it has a low sulfur content compared to the 2K grade of kerosene. Antifreeze is another product purchased in quantity by consumers during the winter months. The Department licenses antifreeze Hurricane Kate stormed through the Florida panhandle and across south Georgia in late November damaging the areas' crops, particularly cotton, pecans and soybeans. After assessing the damage, the Georgia Crop Reporting Service estimates Georgia's cotton crop to be 360,000 bales, based on a harvest of 255,000 acres. The average yield is projected to be 678 pounds of lint per acre. manufacturers and tests about 100 samples of antifreeze each year from manufacturers who wish to sell their product in Georgia. Tests of the physical properties of antifreeze such as density, moisture content, pH, freeze point and boiling point assure the consumer the product is free from contamination and will protect an engine from cold temperatures. To insure proper protection, a mixture of 50 percent antifreeze with 50 percent water is recommended, but the percentage of antifreeze used depends upon the degree of protection desired. Although a higher concentration of antifreeze can be used, no more than 70 percent of the radiator fluid should be antifreeze. "Antifreeze and kerosene are two products that consumers don't think about until cold weather time, but our Department regulates both yearround," noted Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Even though the sampling and testing are tremendous responsibilities, we very rarely find violations and that speaks well for the manufacturers and distributors of antifreeze and kerosene." For additional information on antifreeze or kerosene, or to file a complaint about either product, call tollfree 1-800-282-5852. Utilize Winter Months To Improve Farm Safety Many people believe when winter sets in, farmers do not have much to do. But as any farmer can attest, farming is a year-round, full-time job. Although there may not be as many crops grown in Georgia during the winter months as other times of year, there are many chores to be done. Maintenance of buildings and equipment is an important part of farm management. They are necessary for farm operation and are a big investment. Equipment is needed for planting, harvesting, transporting and storing of crops and buildings are necessary for storage of equipment, crops and supplies. This time of year it is especially important for farmers to make certain their buildings and equipment are safe.
