FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol.71, No. 50 Wednesday, December 11, 1985 . H. Bright Future Irvin Requests Assistance For Hurricane-Damaged Crops For Aquaculture As the general public has become more diet and nutrition conscious, many people have turned to fish and shellfish as an alternative source of protein. This has led to an increase in the growth of aquaculture, the controlled cultivation of aquatic plants and animals, in the southern states. In Georgia, the industry is centered around eatfish production. As a result of this growth, the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation formed its newest commodity advisory committee, aquaculture, in 1981. With the industry continuing to grow, the committee will work to insure that aquaculture is regulated properly and is developed without producing ill effects on the producers. Our guest columnist this week is E. H. Armor, Chairman, Georgia Farm Bureau Aquaculture Advisory Committee, 206 South Main Street, Greensboro 30642.) States such as Mississippi and Arkansas have been in catfish production much longer than Georgia and have marketed their product more aggressively. These states are able to supply large restaurant and market chains on a continuous basis with the large, filet-sized fish currently in demand. At this time, Georgia cannot effectively compete with these states for such markets. But Georgia has great potential in supplying smaller, local markets. In fact, due to the large contract operations of other states, the smaller restaurants and markets have not been able to buy all the catfish they needed. Georgia producers can help supply that need. Another reason for the success of catfish production in other southern states has been the existence of co-op programs for growers. There was an attempt at such an organization in Georgia about 10 years ago, but it was short-lived because there just was not enough market for catfish at that time. Recently over 100 farmers met in Macon to vote on the formation of a Georgia Aquaculture Association. A committee formed at the meeting is now working to develop ideas for the organization statewide. (Continued on Page 16) Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has telegrammed United States Secretary of Agriculture John Block and asked that he use his discretionary authority to make direct commodity grants to Georgia farmers whose crops were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Kate. INSIDE We Get Letters .... page 2 Georgia Cooking ..: page 5 Livestock Clip & Save ......... page 7 Special People List.......... page 8&9 Holiday Recipes .. page 13 Special Handicrafts...... page 14 Bulletin Calendar ...... page 15 "Most of our farmers cannot afford any more debt, no matter what the interest rate," Irvin explained. "Grants in the form of surplus commodities would be extremely beneficial since they would be something the farmers could turn immediately into cash." Irvin commended Governor Joe Frank Harris for his efforts to obtain county disaster designations and noted that there will likely be some farmers who are in a position to take advantage of low interest government loans if they are made available. But he noted that a grant would be a blessing for most of the state's farmers who have suffered through consecutive years of weather-related crop disasters, incurring more debt with each disaster. (Continued on Page 16) Include Festive Holly In Landscaping Scheme With scarlet berries adorning its glossy, evergreen foliage, its no wonder why holly has become one of the favorite symbols of Christmas. Not only is holly a celebrated holiday symbol, it is among the most popular shrubs sold by Georgia nurseries. If you are guilty of raiding your neighbor's holly bush each year for Christmas greenery, it is about time you establish your own source. Holly is appealing to homeowners because it is unusually hardy and does not require the extensive care demanded by some ornamentals. While container-grown holly can be established year-round, balled and burlapped plants should be planted from October to February. While most think of holly as a small tree with spiny leaves and red berries, some varieties do not share these characteristics. For example, Japanese hollies produce relatively small, spineless leaves and black fruit. American holly, found native throughout Georgia, is what we know as the traditional Christmas holly. Generally, Chinese, English, Yaupon and hybrid hollies also feature red berries. If you are interested in varieties which are heavy berry producers, Extension horticulturists recommend Savannah, Foster No. 2, Nellie Stevens and Burford. These popular varieties are available at garden centers throughout the state. After selecting the desirable variety, choose a suitable location for the plant. Almost all hollies thrive in a wide range of light conditions from full sunlight to moderate shade. But growth tends to be more compact when plants are located in full sunlight. Hollies are adapted to a variety of soil types found in the state, but a lose, crumbly soil is best. More than likely, you will need to incorporate organic matter, such as pine bark, peat moss or decomposed leaf mold to improve the soil's structure. As a general rule, one third organic matter added to two thirds of the soil removed from the planting hole is a good ratio. Thoroughly mix the two materials before replacing around the newly planted holly. Dig a hole about two feet wide for shrub-like plants and three feet wide for tree-type hollies. Do not plant (Continued on Page 16) Dwarf Burford holly is a variety with characteristics similar to the popular Burford holly. The glossy, dark green leaves are smaller and growth rate is slower. In addition, the leaves generally have only one spine at the tip. Dwarf Burford will grow to a height of at least five to six feet if not heavily pruned. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 11,1985 Dear Editor. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution recently published an article about the Farmers & Consumers Market Bulletin which interested me very much. I thought you would be interested in knowing that I mimeographed the first Bulletin when I was at Tech High School in Atlanta. As the article mentioned, my father, J. J. Brown, published it on a mimeograph machine. The Bulletin became so popular that we moved it over to the basement of the capitol and I handled the multigraphing of it. Finally, it was jobbed out to a printer. Walter Brown P.O. Box1717 Spartanburg, South Carolina *** Dear Editor I really appreciated Commissioner Irvin's column reminding folks to be thankful for Georgia. I have composed a littier verse to show my appreciation for the holiday season. Merry Christmas to all you readers May we remember the Christ-Child's birth And join our hearts together wishing Good will to everyone on Earth. Mrs. O.M. Palmour 21 Craig Drive The Meadows Conyers, Georgia 30207 Dear Editor During this holiday season, I feel it especially ap- propriate to make my family's thanks known to the farmers of Georgia and throughout this country. Not being from a farm family and never having lived on a farm, I have been guilty of taking for granted the wonderful gifts of fresh food our farmers produce. I would like to take this opportunity, through the Market Bulletin, to express our very deep gratitude for the hard work, diligent efforts, and generosity of our state's farmers. Without them, I truly don't know where we would be today. Because many farmers are experiencing serious problems financially, and also because the risks of farming are always great, it occurs to me that they need the prayers of people who believe in the power of prayer. I would love to see a list of Georgia farmers, and to know that many, many people would join in diligent prayer for them and for others across America who are experiencing similar problems. Again, sincere thanks to those who work our farms and produce the outstanding bounty with which we are blessed! Margaret W.
