FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 5 Wednesday, January 30, 1985 1984 Cotton Crop Sets Records FFA Prepares Future Leaders Since its founding in 1928, the Future Farmers of America (FFA) has continually grown and helped millions of young adults in their quest for better, more productive farming operations. I am honored to have the opportunity to share a few thoughts with you on behalf of the Georgia Association FFA state officers and the 15,000 members throughout the state. I have been actively involved in FFA, as well as farming, for many years. I am just beginning to realize the impact that our generation of FFA members and agricultural students is making on our communities, state and nation. (Our guest columnist this week is William W. Hughes, Jr., State President of the Georgia Association of Future Farmers of America, Route 2, Box 231, Pembroke 31321.)___________________ For example, one of the aims of our organization is to better prepare young people to assume significant roles in our society. Not only do students learn skills in agriculture, metalworking, and woodworking but by assuming adult roles, they are taught responsibility, confidence, and high values and ideals. A young person's goals in FFA are unlimited. They can go as far as their dreams and talents can take them. Contests, which range from local and regional to state and national levels, provide opportunities for all FFA members. The FFA is the key to the future of agriculture all over the world. Vocational agriculture students learn new and innovative procedures which help produce better quality crops and higher yields. They also learn the latest techniques in breeding livestock and planting which help the United States remain at the "top of the ladder" in production agriculture. Members acquire leadership skills which help them become better (Continued on Page 12) ^c|^^^^^||j^P|g||^^|;: The 1984 Georgia cotton crop set records for both total production and yield per acre, according to recent figures released by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Total state production was 280,000 bales harvested from 172,000 acres. That set the average yield at 781 pounds per acre, up 314 pounds from the previous yield of 467 pounds per acre. A proposed Boll Weevil Eradication Act will come before the Georgia General Assembly during the current session, and would allow for a grower referendum to decide whether Georgia cotton producers would participate in an eradication effort. If passed by legislators and growers, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin says the Boll Weevil Eradication Act could help boost Georgia's cotton production substantially. illiifllll^^ Ga. Milk Producers Hold Annual Meeting Survival in the 80's will be the theme of the 34th annual convention of the Georgia Milk Producers Association which will be held at the Radisson Inn in Atlanta, February 12-13. Headlining the list of speakers will be First District Congressman Lindsey Thomas. He will present an outlook on the dairy situation as seen from Washington. Others include Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, Extension Director Tal Duval, and Larry Guthrie, Head of the Extension dairy division. Bill Moore, executive director of the association, said Georgia dairymen face more critical marketing issues in 1985 than they have confronted in many years. In his opinion, decisions will be made at this meeting that will decide the fate of many producers. Of paramount importance will be the future of the Sunbelt Dairy Federation, a super cooperative that has been operating in the Southeast since September. It is credited with boosting fluid milk prices to producers by $1 per cwt. Also of great concern is the (Continued on Page 12) in Tax Laws Affect Agricultural Returns As a result of the Tax Reform Act of 1984, there have been a number of changes in the income tax laws. Some of these changes will affect farmers when they file their 1984 income tax returns. Farm Land Edition The spring farm land edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published March 6. Deadline for this issue is February 20. Please follow these guidelines when submitting an ad for publication in the farm land edition. *Only farm land may be advertised; land tracts must be at least five acres in size. *Indicate acreage and county where your property is located. * There is a 30 word limit including name and address. *Ads must be submitted by the individual owner; no realtors or agents are allowed to advertise. *All notices must be received in writing by the February 20 deadline. The use of investment credit and depreciation on cars, light trucks, and computers, used partly for business and partly personal, has been restricted. This change applies to items placed in service after June 18, 1984. If business use is 50 percent or less, there is no investment credit at all; depreciation on the business part must be calculated by using the straight line method over five years for cars and light trucks and 12 years for computers. If business use is more than 50 percent, investment credit is allowed on the business portion. But the maximum investment credit allowed on a car is $1000. The capital gains holding period has been reduced from one year to six months. Capital assets acquired after June 22, 1984, qualify for longterm capital gain or loss treatment if held for more than six months. However, the holding period has not changed for livestock held for draft, (Continued on Page 12} Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 30, 1985 we ad letteu I ^^& Dear Editor: So many times we read complaints from mail order customers about poor service or no service at all. But, I would like to say a good word about one of your advertisers. On a Thursday, after reading an ad in the MARKET BULLETIN, I mailed an order for 11 pounds of shelled peanuts to an advertiser in Ocilla. On the following Tuesday, the UPS man delivered the peanuts to my door. Not only was the service the very best you could ask for, but the peanuts were too.
