FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Trf * Vol.71, No. 46 Dmt Insect Research Benefits Farmers The fascinating science of insects and their relatives is what entomology is all about. The world of insects abounds in the picturesque, the unusual and even the fantastic. People often ask, "just how many insects are there?" Nobody knows exactly. We do know that the number of different kinds of insects make up 70-80 percent of all the known kinds of animals on earth. With its diverse climate, topography and vegetation, Georgia abounds with insects of all sizes, shapes and dispositions. In total number, only a few kinds of insects are harmful or destructive. However, these cause up to $500 million a year in damage and cost of control in Georgia. Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Don T. Canerday, Extension Entomology Depart ment Head and Division Chairman, Univer sity of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Bar row Hall, Athens 30602. Most Georgians have experienced the devastating effects of the boll weevil or armyworm; the pain of a wasp or fire ant sting; the disgusting sight of roaches in the kitchen, or the aggravation of eye gnats at a South Georgia barbeque. As a result, to most people the only good bug is a dead bug. Not so. The honey bee is probably the best known among the useful insects for its honey and pollination. Georgian's gross income from honey bees is about $10 million per year, not counting their tremendous value as pollinators of several agricultural commodities. Other insects are invaluable as pollinators, soil builders and scavengers. Some are effective predators and parasites of destructive insects. The asthetic value of insects is the least tangible of all, but the grace and beauty of many butterflies and moths is universally admired. The balance between friend and (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday, November 13, 1985 Naval Stores History Industry Revitalized By Production Improvements Georgia's naval stores proved profitable during the 1800's, but there were signs that production methods would have to change if the industry was to survive. The boxing method used to tap gum resources proved damaging to the trees, and there was concern that the state's supply of trees was being depleted without any consideration for conservation. Although a receptacle for catching gum was patented in the U.S. in 1868, this method was not used in America until after the turn of the century. The French had begun using earthen pots for gum collection as early as 1860. After studying the French system and conducting numerous tests, Dr. Charles Herty, a chemist at the University of Georgia, began promoting the new system. He is given much of the credit for the change from boxes to cups, which began on a commercial basis in 1904. Gum producers were slow to adopt the new method, however. In 1908, ninety percent of the trees worked in Georgia still had boxes. When the cup and gutter system was introduced, the cups were made of clay in the shape of a flowerpot. Because they were bulky and broken easily, the clay cups were replaced by galvanized iron and later plastic. About this time it was discovered that shallow chipping of narrow streaks could almost double the working life of the tree. These two improvements substantially reduced the damage to trees allowing them to be harvested later for wood products. In 1936 a group of gum producers founded the American Turpentine Farmers Association Cooperative. This group has involved itself in such fields as education, research and marketing in its efforts to main- This is the second of a two part series on Georgia's naval stores industry.______ tain the gum and naval stores industry on a sound and permanent basis. The headquarters of the Association is located in Valdosta near the heart of the state's gum producing region. During the mid to late 1930's, experiments were conducted to test the effects of various chemicals in stimulating gum flow. The most effective stimulant was determined to be a low percentage solution of sulfuric acid. This stimulant, along with others, is still in use today. Other experiments revealed that gum yields were just as high or higher if no wood was removed during streaking. This allowed the use of David King (holding paddle) and the damage to trees allowing them to be harvested later for wood products. bark hacks (special cutting tools) to remove only the bark and cambium of the tree at each chipping, thus preserving the timber for later use. Around 1950 spiral gutters and aprons came into use. These gutters (Continued on Page 12) the ySDAState^Emergency fiojaid met in Atnetts last Wednesday to review Damage Assessment Reports from 88 counties on honey production and bee losses resulting from last winter's freeze, the late spring drought and high temperatures in June. The extended cold weather weakened or killed many hives, and the dry, hot weather prevented blooming of flowers bees use to make honey. . \ /- : .'^ J.',': '.:. -i< The Board approved the county reports and forwarded them to Governor Joe Frank Harris. After reviewing the reports, Harris will likely ask Secretary of Agriculture John Block to amend his earlier request (Continued on Page 12} Winner Announced in Statement Contest Many excellent entries were submitted for the Georgia Agribusiness Council's third annual statement contest. Selecting one winner proved to be quite a chore. Contest participants were required to express in 25 words or less "What agribusiness means to me." Don Koehler of Tifton submitted the following winning entry: Agribusiness is the li/eblood of our nation; it supplies our basic needs, employs our people, buys our goods and is the foundation of our economy. Koehler was awarded two complimentary tickets to the Agribusiness Council's annual Harvest Ball planned for November 22 at the Marriott Marquis. In addition, he will receive accomodations for two at the Marriott Marquis for November 22, along with breakfast on Saturday morning. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agribusiness Council expresses appreciation to those individuals who took the time to participate in the statement contest. For additional information about agribusiness in Georgia or the Harvest Ball, contact the Agribusiness Council at 656-3698. Farm-City Day Observance Planned in Fort Valley Fort Valley State College (FVSC) and the Peach County Extension Service will host their annual Farm-City Day observance, November 16, from 10 a.m.-l p.m., on the FVSC campus. The purpose of the observance is to bring about better understanding between rural and urban people, and to increase the knowledge and appreciation of each for the American way of life. There is a $1 registration fee for the event, which includes a catfish lunch. For more information, contact Dr. Glenwood F. Hill, Cooperative Extension Program, Fort Valley State College, 912-825-6269.
