FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy frvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 4 Wednesday, January 23, 1985 Labs Help Fight Poultry Disease The poultry industry in Georgia is a billion dollar industry. It generates approximately one out of every three dollars of agricultural income. The impact on the economy of our state would be tremendous if this industry were drastically curtailed for any reason. In the early 1970's, we saw what exotic Newcastle disease did to California's poultry industry. In the past year we have seen in Pennsylvania and (Virginia what ' highly pathogenic avian influenza did to their poultry industry. Approximately seventeen million birds were depopulated at a cost of approximately sixty-three million dollars. All quarantines have (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. W. W. Adams, Executive Director of the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association, Post Office Box 20, Oakwood 30566). now been lifted and the survivors in the industry are trying to get back to doing business as usual. It will be a long, uphill climb for them. Georgia poultry producers were very concerned when highly pathogenic avian influenza was in Pennsylvania and Virginia. It was shown that it could even be transmitted by flies as well as other means. Our State has been extremely fortunate in that neither of these potentially devastating diseases has been introduced into the poultry industry. We have had a couple of near misses when caged birds infected with exotic Newcastle disease were brought into the state. Swift action by the Department of Agriculture eliminated these threats. Georgia is in the enviable position of having a network of seven poultry diagnostic laboratories which are located in our major poultry producing areas. The main laboratory is in Oakwood, which is just south of Gainesville, and branch laboratories are located in Dalton, Canton, {Continued on Page 12} Georgia Brucellosis Program Approaching " Class A " Status Georgia's cattle industry is anticipating "Payoff Year" in 1985. If all goes well, the state should achieve "Class A" status in the national battle to control and eradicate brucellosis, a costly disease for cattle producers, and one that can be dangerous to humans who contract it or who consume contaminated meat or milk. The move from "Class B" to "Class A" status will be an economic plus for producers according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. For example, fewer health tests will be required on cattle producers selling for out-of-state markets. Many states require only a negative brucellosis test on individual cattle shipped in from a "Class A" state rather than negative tests on the entire herd of origin. To qualify as a "Class A" state, Georgia must have no more than 2.5 infected herds per thousand for a 12-month period. "We've been well below that number for about six months, and that's great considering we have 43,499 cattle herds in Georgia," Irvin noted. However, he cautioned, "It is critical that the hard work that has gone into achieving this goal be continued." Page 12 Grandpa's Garden Houseplants benefit from humidi ty particularly during the winter months. You can increase humidity simply by grouping your plants together. Or, place a layer of pebbles or perlite in a shallow container with just enough water to cover the bot tom. Place potted plants on top of the pebbles so they will be near the cons tant evaporation of water. Since you do not have many gardening chores this time of year, take the opportunity to visit your local library, check out a few books on gardening, curl up in front of a warm fire, and read about activities you would like to accomplish when the weather gets warmer. Keep watering and feeding of your indoor plants to a minimum during the winter months. Overwatering on ly encourages disease problems and plants generally grow more slowly and require fewer nutrients during the winter. THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 23, 1985 Georgia Brucellosis Program (Continued from Page 1) How to Submit reducing and eliminating The ultimate a cattle producer can A Seed Sample brucellosis," Irvin added. Since 1977, these individuals have been working together in an ac celerated effort to wipe out the disease in Georgia. At that time, Georgia had over 500 infected herds. Today there are only 43. strive for is to have his herd certified "brucellosis free." In Georgia today, 324 herds currently have that designation, meaning that repeated official testing has proven the bacterial disease is not present. Therefore, those "free" herds are the safest source for bull and heifer replacements. Georgia's next goal will be to achieve statewide "free" status. "Becoming a brucellosis free state will be our biggest challenge. We've worked hard to get this close to Class A status, and we're certain to reach it. But once we do, the real work begins," concluded Irvin. "Free" status is achievable. Nine teen states already have been cer tified "free" including North and South Carolina. Recently, two additional Georgia herds were granted "certified free" status. One herd in Ben Hill County is owned by Bill Mann of Fitzgerald. The other in Whitfield County is owned by Freeman Whaley of Dalton. Now is the time for farmers to have seed quality checked prior to spring planting. Follow these guidelines when submitting seed for germination testing: Send about one and one-half to two pounds of any large seed such as soybeans, cotton or corn. For small seed, one half pound is sufficient. Mail seed samples in a protective cardboard package or similar con- tainer to prevent damage. Allow two to four weeks for testing to be completed, depending on the type of seed. Include the kind and variety of seed and your full name and address, along with the sample. Lot number, if assigned, should also be included. There is no charge for this Labs Help Fight service. Address samples to: Annual Contest (Continued from Page 1} Royston, Tifton, Douglas and Statesboro. These laboratories were establish ed to assist the poultry industry with disease prevention and control. Over a period of time, the thrust of our ef forts has changed from disease iden tification and treatment to disease prevention. It is more economical to produce a healthy bird than to treat one after it becomes ill. By having these laboratories readily available, the Georgia poultry industry can attain a more com petitive position with other poultry producing states. The consumer is the ultimate one to benefit since the laboratories help the industy pro duce a quality product more economically. The services of these laboratories are available to the small flock owners just as they are to commer cial poultry producers. We hope you do not have a problem but if you do, we are ready to assist you in any way that we can.
