FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agricu/fure Market Bulletin Vol.71, No. 38 Wednesday, September 18, 1985 Time To Enjoy Ga. Muscadines With the changing of the seasons, Mother Nature gives us clues that fall is just around the corner. One of these delightful clues is the muscadine grape one of nature's sweet treats. Muscadines come to us in many sizes, colors and varying tastes, from very sweet to very tart. The fruit is now at its peak in flavor and can be purchased at pickyour-own opera- tions, farmers' markets and supermarkets across the state. There tends to be much debate over what to call this native fruit. They are known as scuppernongs, fox grapes and bullaces. Muscadine (Vitis rotundrfolia) however, is the recognized common name since scuppernong is only a variety of the bronze muscadine. Our guest columnist this week is Gary H. Paulk, President, Georgia Muscadine Growers Association, Route 1, Wray 31798. The name scuppernong is derived from the Algonquin Indian word, "Ascuponung," or "place of the Sweet Bay tree." History credits Sir Walter Raleigh with the discovery of the scuppernong grape in 1584 on Roanoke Island, home of the Lost Colony. The "mother vine" to this day still bears fruit and has a trunk over two feet in diameter. Thomas Jefferson also planted a number of scuppernong vines at Monticello. Since that time, an extensive breeding program has resulted in many of the improved varieties which are now planted commercially. Muscadines are either pistillate-a female plant that depends on another plant with pollen in order for the plant to set a crop of fruit, or self-fertile-a plant that produces fruit as well as pollinates the pistillate varieties. Muscadines range in color from bronze to black. Since muscadines have a very fruity flavor, they make excellent (Continued on Page 12) Damage Assessment Reports '. ment [ of ; tittn :;';%iji : freeze ' ' spring : ties:; .' may ; Owners Urged To Vaccinate Horses Against Sleeping Sickness Virus Cases of Eastern equine encephalitis, commonly known as sleeping sickness, recently have been confirmed in South Georgia. Since the disease is spread by mosquitoes, it is more common during the late summer and early fall. For this reason, horse owners are urged to take measures to prevent the infec- tion. Encephalitis, a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, is carried naturally by some species of wild birds. When mosquitoes bite these infected birds, the insects are capable of transmitting the disease to other animals. While humans can be infected, the virus cannot be spread from horses to humans. In addition, once the disease infects a horse, it cannot be spread to other horses. Vaccines, restricted for use on horses, are available for sleeping sickness. Horse owners are urged to have animals vaccinated by their veterinarians. This requires two shots the first year and a booster shot every year thereafter. In addition, since past outbreaks have occurred primarily in the southern half of the state, coastal plain residents should make a special effort to control mosquito populations. Possible breeding areas should be eliminated. For example, stagnant water should be drained and containers with water emptied. Sprays also are available to control the insects. Sleeping sickness attacks the central nervous system. Infected horses usually have an elevated temperature followed by incoordination, circling, sleepiness, paralysis of lips (particularly lower lips) and grinding of the teeth. The animal also will tend to lean or press against a tree or barn. These symptoms eventually lead to complete paralysis. Death may occur in three to eight days after clinical signs are observed. Should your norse snow signs suggestive of encephalitis, contact your veterinarian immediately. Positive cases should be reported to the Georgia Department of Agriculture's animal industry division by the attending vet. National Farm Safety Week September 15-21 National Farm Safety Week will be observed September 15-21. This week is set aside to reaffirm the need to further reduce the number and severity of farm related accidents. Agricultural and work-related accidents caused approximately 1,700 deaths and 180,000 disabling injuries last year, according to preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council. The Council also reports that the total cost of accidents and fires to farming families approaches $5 billion annually. In order to reduce these numbers, farmers must keep informed about safety and health and learn to prevent injury and illness. In addition to needless pain and suffering, most farmers cannot afford the time loss and expense caused by accidents and work illnesses. The National Safety Council encourages all farmers to review health and safety measures during this harvest season. Follow Safety Guidelines For A Safe Harvest Season All farmers can help to make this a safe and productive harvest season by following these guidelines suggested by the National Safety Coun- cil: * Heed the recommendations in the operator's manual for each harvesting machine. * Make sure workers are trained and competent to do their jobs. Be extra careful the first day or two of harvesting as accidents often occur early because workers may be unfamiliar with equipment or have not operated it since last season. * Keep all shielding in place while operating. Avoid unshielded moving parts. * Turn off the power before you unclog machinery or deal with operating problems. Many amputation injuries result from doing so with, machinery running. * Keep extra riders off and away. * Adjust travel speed to ground and crop conditions. Avoid ditches, steep slopes, obstacles, overhead (Continued on Page 12} Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, September 18,1985 Farm employment If you have questions regarding this category, call Sonya Way 656-3727.
