FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 37 Wednesday, September 11, 1985 Consider Degree In Vet Technology Individuals who enjoy working with animals should consider a veterinary career. Fort Valley State College (FVSC) offers programs in veterinary technology and pre- veterinary medicine. Veterinary technology is a twoyear associate degree program tailored for students who desire to enter the field of veterinary medicine without spending the years and expenditures required to become a veterinarian. The program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Our guest columnist this week is Dr. K. L. Arora, Director, Veterinary Technology Program, Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley 31030. __________________ The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine collaborates in this program by providing three months of practical training to the technician students. Graduates work as assistants to veterinarians or research scientists. They are knowledgeable in the care of animals, hospital procedures, physical condition of animals in health and in disease, disease control measures, surgical and radiological techniques and routine laboratory and animal health care procedures. The curriculum requires seven quarters of coursework including practical training. Five of these quarters are spent at the FVSC campus, one quarter of externship with a practicing veterinarian or equivalent government program, and one quarter at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia. All this time the student remains enrolled at FVSC and pays only Fort Valley's tuition. Courses in the training of veterinary technicians cover large and small animal care, as well as laboratory animals. Coursework relies heavily on actual hands-on laboratory experience. Grown Products With fall harvest underway throughout the state, consumers should take advantage of the fresh fruits and vegetables available at Georgia's farmers' markets. Late summer field crops are available in good quantities and plenty of fresh apples, sweet potatoes and pumpkins should be arriving in time for fall cooking and preserving. Spokesmen for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which operates the state's six major markets and eleven seasonal markets, gave this summary of conditions: The Atlanta market, the "Granddaddy of them all" has the largest volume and variety of products and has a cannery located on its grounds. The cannery is open every year from early July through Labor Day. The 146 acre facility is the second largest in the nation and offers plenty of produce and plenty of room to comparison shop. The Augusta market, boasting annual sales of over $30 million, features corn, southern field peas and lima beans. This year a good supply of watermelons, fresh green peanuts, pumpkins and quite a few apples are available. The Columbus market manager reported good quantities of greens, as well as moderate supplies of tomatoes, peas, okra and butter beans. This market usually leads the state in the sale of lima beans. Sweet potatoes, cabbage and collard greens currently are in supply at the Macon market. Peanuts and turnip greens also are available. With over $20 million in annual sales, the Thomasville market is an auction as well as retail facility. The featured crops are squash, bell peppers, field peas, beans and okra. Heavy late planting of tomatoes should result in large supplies throughout the fall. Corn, grain sorghum, soybean and cotton production are predicted to exceed last year's totals. But, peanuts, tobacco and hay production will likely be down. Even though peanuts are expected to have seven percent less production than last year's record yield of 2.16 billion pounds, the second highest yield ever is forecast at 2.0 billion pounds. South Georgia producers experienced some delay in harvest and digging during periods of excessive rains late last month, but were spared the predicted eight to 10 inches that could have accompanied Hurricane Elena. Corn suffered from lack of rain early in the summer, but growers still expect to harvest one million acres two percent more than the 985,000 acres harvested last year. Please, when you mail seed, especially hard seed such as "four o'clocks," ask that the envelope be "hand canceled." Otherwise the seed will be crushed or lost in the mail from a tear in the envelope. This happened to me. I received an empty envelope torn in several places.
