FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 36 Wednesday, September 4, 1985 Tim Apple Harvest Underway In Ga. Apple harvest is in full swing throughout Georgia. But once again, the North Georgia crop suffered damage as a result of late spring freezes. While there will be a limited supply of Red Delicious, the most popular variety, other varieties should be available in sufficient quantities to meet consumer demand. Middle Georgia's Red and Golden Delicious varieties have been available since early August. These varieties should be in season in the North Georgia area by early September. Thanks to the cold storage facilities, most of North Georgia's varieties will be available until late December. Our guest columnist this week is Tim Mercier, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Apples, Box 483, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513. Georgia apple growers take pride in the fact that the state's crop is the first to reach the fresh market each year. Many large apple producing states use controlled atmosphere storage to stretch their marketing season to 12 or 13 months. For this reason, it is difficult to find new crop apples in supermarkets this time of year. Fortunately, Georgia's crop can fill this gap. Here in Georgia, consumers are fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy a wide selection of varieties that are fresh and high in quality. Along with delicious apples, consumers also can enjoy fresh cider. This traditional favorite should be plentiful now throughout the holiday season. Since fresh cider has no preservatives, it must be refrigerated. It also may be frozen to preserve its orchard fresh flavor. While taking a fall leaf tour or visiting the North Georgia mountains, consumers should consider purchasing apples and cider directly from the orchard or local state farmers' markets; often a savings can be realized by purchasing directly from the source. Entomology and Pesticides Focus Of Ga. Ag Department Division The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Entomology and Pesticide Division has a full time job regulating and protecting agricultural and horticultural interests from insect damage and plant disease. In addition to this responsibility, the Division also regulates pesticides to ensure their use has the least possible adverse effect on the environment. Services provided by this Division cover a broad spectrum including inspecting beehives, tracking down Japanese beetles and answering consumers' questions about pesticide use in their gardens, (see telephone number on page 12). The Entomology and Pesticides Division is organized into four main subdivisions headquartered in Atlanta. A regional office is located in Tifton, an important center for much of the state's agricultural activity. The various branches and their areas of responsibility are described briefly as follows. Pesticide Registration and Product Quality. This branch is responsible for licensing dealers of restricted use pesticides and for ensuring that pesticides are properly registered, labelled and tested. Consumer questions regarding pesticide use are handled by this office. Pesticide Applicator Licensing and Treated Timber. Licenses are granted to pesticide contractors and to commercial and private applicators through this office. In addition to this service, personnel are responsible for irrigation and groundwater protection, treated timber product registration, and the licensing of treated timber processors and dealers.
