FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 34 Wednesday, August 21, 1985 Ag Research Benefits Ga. The Coastal Plain Station, a part of the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture, is located in Tifton and serves Coastal Plains agriculture * a major food and fiber production belt. Field research was started in 1920 with a staff consisting of the director, a farm superintendent and two researchers. The Station now has around 5500 acres of land. Approxi- mately 150 professionals, including employees of the Coastal Plain Station, The Cooperative Extension Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, work to meet the needs of Coastal Plains agriculture. Our guest columnist this week is Dr. William C. McCormick, Director, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton 31793. The Station's research activities, from day one, have to a certain extent centered around the immediate problems of the farmer. Plant and animal diseases, insect control, tillage practices, varieties, breeds, land use, systems approach, multiple cropping, irrigation, harvesting, processing and other aspects of crop and livestock production have been researched. The Cooperative Extension Service has been able to immediately transfer research information to the farmer. The Station has played an active role in agriculture and is credited with superior performance in the following areas: Sweet potatoes - Varieties released, cultural practices and production recommendations result in our high quality, high yielding potatoes. Blueberries - Our variety releases and cultural practices are largely responsible for our industry. Pecan production - Variety releases, cultural practices, disease and insect control plus irrigation (Continued on Page 12) Scott Jensen, of Conyers, demonstrates the use of a mouldboard plow with mulch bottom attachment at the recent eighth annual Southern No-till Conference in Griffin. During the first day of the conference, farmers, scientists and government officials presented the pros, cons and latest developments in conservation tillage. The following day, field tours, displays and equipment demonstrations were held at the University of Georgia's Bledsoe Farm. Approximately 500 people attended the conference. State's Case Proceeds Against Scott Farms Superior Court Judge Bryant Culpepper recently ruled to allow the state's case against Scott Farms and owner Raymond O. "Neily" Scott to proceed with an evidentiary hearing. Scott's attorneys had previously filed a motion with the State Superior Court seeking the dismissal of the charges against their client on the grounds that Georgia's statutes concerning marketing and selling Vidalia onions are "vague." Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was pleased with the ruling. He explained that Scott was caught "red-handed" in the act of rebagging out-of-state onions into bags carrying a Georgia label. "The ruling for an evidentiary hearing is encouraging and we plan to proceed vigorously wttfrthe case," Irvin noted. "All evidence shows that Mr. Scott's sole intent was one of deception and fraud against consumers. His actions indicate that he knew what he was doing and that it was illegal." Family Farm Hearing Scheduled In Albany Georgia's Second District Congressman Charles Hatcher will chair an investigative hearing in Albany, September 6, concerning the future of family farming. The hearing will be held at the Albany Civic Center at 9 a.m. Members of the Antitrust and Restraint of Trade Activities Affecting Small Business Subcommittee, which Hatcher chairs, will attend the meeting. Representatives Richard Ray, Georgia, and Vin Weber, Minnesota, also will be in attendance. Testimony will be heard from a cross-section of people from the agriculture and small business communities. The hearing will examine the future of the family farming operation and provide the congressmen with information to carry back to Washington. Hatcher believes the findings will enable him to better represent the concerns of farmers and the small businesses that interact with agriculture. Hatcher will chair a similar hearing in Perry at 2 p.m. September 6, at the Holiday Inn. The public is invited to attend both hearings. Department Regulates Bedding For Quality and Product Content Most consumers are familiar with the little tag found on pillows, mattresses and other bedding materials which states, "do not remove under penalty of law." But many are not aware that the Georgia Department of Agriculture has anything to do with this tag. Initially, many state agricultural agencies became involved with the regulation of bedding because mattresses were made primarily of cotton. Previously regulated by the Georgia Health Department, the Georgia Department of Agriculture assumed responsibility for this area during Governor Jimmy Carter's administration. In Georgia, bedding regulations apply to all stuffed furniture that is intended for sleeping, such as convertible sofas. In addition, sleeping accessories, such as mattress pads, pillows and comforters are included. Operations involved in the commercial sale of second hand bedding also are regulated. Individuals who make pillows or comforters for their own use or as gifts are not covered by the Depart- ment's rules. Similarly, an individual may sell an article of bedding to another individual, at a garage sale for instance, without a permit. All bedding manufacturers, renovators or reupholsterers are required to register with the state Department of Agriculture. Each article of bedding sold must have a (Continued on Page 12) Fall Agricultural Fairs Agricultural fairs are truly unique events. There are not many other occasions where one can see prize winning livestock and poultry, unique arts and crafts, county educational exhibits and many other happenings all in one place. Demonstrations of disappearing skills, such as blacksmithing, quilting and shinglesplitting, are often featured at such exhibitions. Although these fairs are not as common as they once were, there are still over 50 fairs held throughout Georgia each year. This fall, take the opportunity to visit a fair in your area. A list of upcoming agricultural fairs is featured on page 10.
