FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol.71, No. 3 Animal Science Programs Vital Extension animal science is a department under the agriculture and natural resources section of the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The Extension Service is one i of three parts of I the College of I Agriculture; the I other two being teaching and research. Our role in Extension Animal Science is to take the latest information from research and get it to county Extension agents so they, in turn, can get it to their producers. (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. M. Kay Cook, Head of the University of Georgia Animal Science Department, Athens 30602.) Members of the department are subject matter specialists in swine, beef, sheep and horses. We provide the local county Extension agent with the latest information on livestock production practices. We are backup resource personnel for the local Extension agents. In order to assist the county agent with his local educational programs, the department provides statewide leadership in several program areas. These areas include bull and boar test stations, performance testing programs, forage testing, field days, short courses and the junior livestock program. Department members are involved in planning short courses for all species of livestock each year. These short courses provide the county agent the opportunity to bring his local people to these educational events. Your local Extension agent will have the dates for livestock short courses offered each year. The agent also has bulletins and circulars on all phases of livestock production available for your use. The junior livestock program is one of the most dynamic programs in which the department is involved. Last year, we had over 1,200 4-H'ers in livestock judging, over 400 entries in the heifer show, around 700 in the junior steer program, 350 in the lamb (Continued on Page 16) Wednesday, January 16, 1985 Potential Vegetable Crops Focus of Current Research While much of Georgia's agricultural industry focuses on commodities such as poultry and peanuts, scientists at Georgia's experiment stations are paving the way for different vegetable and truck crops to be grown throughout the state. According to horticulturist Dr. Dean Batal, Coastal Plains Experi- ment Station, among the speakers at an update seminar on commercial vegetable production, progress is being made. Batal concentrates his research on broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce, and says broccoli is the first of the three to gain momentum as a commercial product in Georgia. "Vegetable producers are just beginning to become interested in broccoli production," explained Batal. "Considering the number of people contacting experiment sta- INSIDE Letters to the Editor....... page 2 Ga. Typically Georgia producers have two to three acres of broccoli (a few proximately 300 to 400 crates (at 21 Horse Shows ...... page 8 pounds each) per acre, according to Special Equine Ads..... .page 9 Helping Each Other..... page 11 Bulletin Calendar.......page 12 Extension vegetable specialist Jim Barber. Most Georgia-grown broccoli is sold directly to grocery stores, but at least one producer sells to the DeKalb Farmers Market. In recent years broccoli consump- tion has increased dramatically. Several areas of research are being Georgia Tobacco Recognized (Continued on Page 16) Contests Emphasize Georgia Agriculture Georgia gold leaf producers always have taken pride in their tobacco crop. After competing in the recent Commissioners' of Agriculture Best Bundle of Tobacco Contest, held in conjunction with the Southern Flue Cured Tobacco Festival in Greenville, North Carolina, several Georgia growers have an especially good reason to be proud. Tobacco submitted by Mr. Earnest L. Altman of Alma (left photo) placed second in the Best Bundle of "Cutter" Tobacco category. He received a plaque and was awarded $100 in prize money. Mr. Edwin "Buddy" Cole of Nichols (right), won second in the Best Bundle of "LeaP' Tobacco category and was awarded $100 and a plaque for his entry. Outstanding bundles of tobacco also were submitted by Carl Whitley, Nichols; Terrell Cason, Nichols; William Whitley, Jr., Alma; and James J. Rewis of Alma. The annual contest featured entries from four states including Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. This year Agriculture Day will be observed March 20. Each year this day is set aside to recognize the largest industry in the United States -farming. In observance of this special day, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Agribusiness Council, and the Georgia Farm Bureau, again are sponsoring two contests. Rules for entering each of the contests are outlined below: STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST *An essay of 250 words or less on the topic, "Think Agriculture .. Your Future Depends, on It." The essays should emphasize the importance of agriculture in Georgia and/or the United States. You may write about the importance of a particular commodity, for example, peanuts or cattle. Or you may write about the importance of agriculture to you and/or your family. The contest is open for two grade categories: fifth to eighth grade and ninth to twelfth grade students. (Continued on Page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 16, 1985 (Editor's Note: We received many cards and letters from individuals who were featured on our list of special people thanking MARKET BULLETIN readers for their thoughtfulness in sending Christmas cards during the holiday season. Although space does not permit us to include all of these comments, we thought the letter below expressed their gratitude). Dear Editor: We would like to thank all the kind people who sent Christmas cards. Indeed it is a good world after all. Imagine the joy and thrills we have had receiving Chrismas cards from so many wonderful people. Our sincere thanks to each of you. Page 11 Helping "Each Other Dear Editor: It has been as long as 60 years when my father, Cap'n Bil- ly, took pride in growing an absolute yellow tomato which was known as the "yellow Ponderosa." The tomato tasted about the same as the red ones and created a colorful dish when combined with the traditional red varieties. This variety had no traces of pink or semblance of throw-back. Should anyone have any true yellow tomato seed, please let me hear from them. In addition I am interested in finding a good pickle and relish recipe utilizing Jerusalem artichokes. I would appreciate your help in either of these requests. William B. Sanford 3060 Pharr Court, NW 707 Atlanta, Georgia 30305 Dear Editor: Our local saddle clubs and 4-H group are in need of the names, addresses and phone numbers of qualified horse show judges in western English, gaited and dressage. We hope that through your paper we can locate some of these folks. If qualified judges will please send the requested information to the following address: Horse Show Judge, Box 100A-1, Brooks 30205. Thank you for your help in this matter. Randy McCarty, President Brooks Saddle Club, Inc. Route 1 Bro*oks*, G*eorgia 30205 Dear Editor: We are interested in organizing a Mustangers of America Club in Georgia in order to get the adopters of horses from the Bureau of Land Management together. This would help everyone gather information and share general experiences. Also, maybe some events of competition with mustangs could be established thereby showing everyone that mustangs are really good horses. The Adopt-a-Horse program is good and we would like to see it continued. By formtng a branch of this club, we would be giving it support and perhaps be able to help promote it in some way. If anyone is interested in this endeavor, please let us know. Sharon L. Sullivan 415 Plantation Road Warner Robins, Georgia 31093 Dear Editor: I wonder if any of your readers know about a small plant that folks use to grow in pots about 40 years ago. The plants were known as blue bells and featured blooms that resembled tiny little blue bells. The plants came up from a little worm-like bulb that looked very much like an oxalis bulb. The leaves were blue-green. If anyone knows anything about this plant or can help me find some, I will be ever thankful to them. Ruth Sears 244 Johns Road Warner Robins, Georgia 31093 Dear Editor: When I was a little girl, I remember my mother preparing a beverage for my father and brothers to enjoy while working in the hot, dusty hay fields. I know it was called "switchel," but I can't remember how it was made. Can you help me? A Stone Mountain Reader (Editor's Note: The beverage to which you refer, "switchel," can be made as follows: Add two cups of sugar, one cup of molasses, one cup of vinegar and one teaspoon of ginger, to a gallon of water, stir and keep it in a cool place. Folks used to put it in a stone jug and keep it in a shady area such as in the shade of a fencerow along the field. While it was once considered refreshing, many claim that you really have to be thirsty to enjoy it).
