FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 29 Wednesday, July 17, 1985 Center Studies Soil Erosion The Southern Piedmont Conservation Research Center in Watkinsville, Georgia, is a 975 acre field research station for the Agricultural Research Service, USDA. Research on erosion problems was started here in 1937 and at a number of other locations across the country. The Southern Piedmont land resource area lies between the mountains and the Coastal Plain from Virginia to Alabama. The topography, soils, and the intense rain storms make it one of the most erosive areas in the United States. Our guest columnist this week is Maurice H. Frere, Center Director, Southern Piedmont Conservation -Research Center, 1445 Experiment Station Road, P.O. Box 555, Watkinsville 30677._____________ A number of practices studied at the Southern Piedmont Center, such as terraces and rotations with meadows, were found to be effective in reducing erosion losses. However, farming has changed over the years with the development of large tractors and low cost fertilizer. The use of large machinery on large fields is not compatible with narrow terraces. Relatively inexpensive nitrogen fertilizer, coupled with the replacement of work horses and mules by tractors, reduced the need for meadow land. Therefore, research must be continued to provide practices that are compatible with the type of farming now practiced. One of the new practices is conservation tillage which leaves crop residues covering at least 30 percent of the soil. This is accomplished by lightly disking or subsoiling the soil or planting directly into last year's crop stubble. The method was started in the midwest but to be successful in the south ways must be found to control weeds and insects. The research unit studying conservation tillage also is studying ways to improve wheat yields when wheat is grown as a second crop in the winter to protect the soil from winter rains. In addition, the unit is researching how to manage fields (Continued on Page 16) Produce Company Fined Because of misuse of the pesticide Aldicarb, also known by the trade name Temik, residues from the substance were found recently in California watermelons. Although there is no evidence that the pesticide was used on Georgia-grown melons, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has been analyzing samples front the state's crop to insure the melons are safe for consumers. All results of the laboratory tests have proved negative thus far, but the Department will continue to monitor the Georgia melons throughout the remainder of the growing season, expected to last through the end of July. Samples of out-of-state melons also will be analyzed. Last year, Georgia farmers sold $20 million worth of watermelons, half of which were sold through the State Farmers' Market in Cordele. Georgia currently ranks third in the nation in watermelon production. For Labeling Violation Last week, Six Flags Produce, Inc., located at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, was fined $2,500 by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. This action was taken after owner Nell Lundy admitted to violations of the Georgia Marketing Act and the Georgia Food Act. Employees of the firm were discovered in late June rebagging California onions into bags carrying a Georgia label. In addition to the fine, the company's State Farmers' Market license and farmers' market lease are on probation through the end of the lease December 31, 1986. Six Flags Produce is a lease tenant at the Atlanla^J&arjnejisLjnarket anA its owners negotiated the fine and probation as settlement in lieu of further action by the Department of Agriculture. "The situation with rebagging allegations is an area we have been actively pursuing throughout the Vidalia onion growing season," em- (Continued on Page 15) INSIDE Livestock Quotations.. page 4 Livestock Clip & Save ........ page 7 Pick your Own List....... pages 8 & 9 Bulletin Calendar.... page 14 Tobacco Chart....... page 15 Directors Elected To Lead Boll Weevil Eradication State cotton producers have elected six regional directors for the proposed Georgia Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin will hold a cotton grower referendum this fall, as authorized by 1985 state legislation, to confirm the appointment of the directors and funding for the Foundation. Georgia's cotton crop brought in $83.4 million to state producers last year, but they also spent millions controlling the boll weevil, as did cotton growers in neighboring states. The eradication attempt is a multi-state effort, considered to be the only way to finally get rid of the pest. The six directors elected to lead (Continued on Page 15) Farm Women Play Significant Role In Farm Operation and Management Although the number of farms across the nation has been declining in recent years, the number of farms operated by women has been on the increase, according to the 1982 Census of Agriculture. Nationally, the number of women farm operators increased from 112,799 in 1978 to 121,599 in 1982, a rise of almost eight percent. The census information does not indicate how many of these women were principal operators. However, a 1980 University of Chicago survey of farm women indicated 11 percent were highly involved in farm management and over half considered themselves to be one of the main operators. The reasons for the increase are not clear, but researchers say the factors include a greater confidence of young women in their ability to manage a farm and a greater willingness of women to report themselves as the principal operator. Another contributing factor is the aging farm population. Between 1978 and 1982, the number of young and middle age farmers decreased while the number of farmers 65 years and older increased. To protect their whiteness, sprinkle with a little lemon juice or other ascorbic acid-containing mixture. Soaking potatoes in cold water for a very long time is not recommended because it can result in the loss of some vitamins. A heavy plastic wrap or container that fits closely around the cheese will prevent the product from drying out. Keeping cheese cold helps to prevent it from "oiling off." How cold should dairy products be kept? The ideal temperature is between 30 degrees and 40 degrees F. Check your refrigerator temperature. Silill Cattle farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. Cattle moving from farm to farm should have a negative brucellosis test within the past 30 days before they are moved whenever this is a change of ownership. Say Cheese The most popular cheese in the United States is Ched- dar. Seven out of every ten pounds of cheese sold is Cheddar, although it is known by many names. Some people call it American others Longhorn or Daisy. When cooking vegetables such as cauliflower, and cabbage, simmer them in milk instead of water. This keeps the vitamins and minerals in the vegetable from being lost, and also adds to it the nutrients from the milk. Directors Elected To Lead Boll Weevil Eradication (Continued from Page 1) the battle in Georgia are Wavell Robinson of Pavo; Chauncey Taylor of Morgan; Johnny Paul Deloach of Unadilla; Charles Williams of Cochran; Bobby Webster of Waynesboro; and Marvin Ruark of Bishop. Elections were conducted by the Georgia Farm Bureau Federa tion. If approved, the Boll Weevil Eradication program will cost $30 to $35 an acre to producers each of three years scientists say will be necessary to completely eradicate the boll weevil. This represents 70 percent of the total cost. The federal government will also pitch in, pay ing for 30 percent of the cost. If ap proved in the grower referendum, the first phase of eradication will begin during the latter part of the 1986 growing season. "Georgia farmers spent over $3 million last year controlling and pay ing for losses caused by this pest," Irvin explained. "If our cotton pro ducers approve the eradication pro gram, the costs of fighting this terri ble pest should diminish in just a few years." The tomatoes eventually reached over nine feet in height and produced well over eight quart buckets of tomatoes. Page 16 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 17, 1985 Control Menacing Poison Ivy Poison ivy is one of the most common poisonous plants found in Georgia. A native plant to the United States, the perennial will grow almost anywhere -- in woods and fields, along fence rows and hedges and up the sides of buildings. Poison ivy usually grows as a clim bing vine in wooded areas, growing up the trunks of trees. But in sunny locations, it commonly takes the shape of a small, bushy shrub. The leaves of poison ivy vary in size and shape. Even though the leaf form may vary from plant to plant, the leaflets always occur in threes. The menacing plant is one that many folks feel they can identify on sight because of the familiar childhood rhyme, "leaflets of three, let it be." But, despite the familiarity of poison ivy, it causes millions of cases of skin poisoning each year. Reaction varies from mild rashes to large, painful blisters. One reason so many people are ex posed is because poison ivy is in conspicuous. It successfully blends in with other lush, summer greenery. Although all parts of the plant can cause poisoning year-round, the greatest danger occurs in the spring and summer. Sap is released from the plant when it is bruised. It can infect the skin directly, or indirectly. For ex ample, the sap can be transmitted by pets who have rolled in it or by handling clothing or sports and garden equipment that has been in contact with the plant. Tiny droplets of sap also can be carried in the smoke of burning plants. Contrary to popular belief, poison ivy rash can not be transmitted by someone who has it nor will existing blisters transmit infection. Poison ivy found in areas fre quented by pets and people should be eradicated. Small plants can be carefully dug out. It is best to tackle this task in the spring when the soil is moist and the roots are less likely to break off. Wear leather gloves and long sleeves when digging. Do not dispose of the vine by burning. In most cases, herbicides will do a much better job of eradication than digging. A chemical method of con trol also reduces the likelihood of skin poisoning. Center Studies (Continued from Page 1) that have lost most of their produc tivity by erosion. The second unit at the Southern Piedmont Center is studying forage / livestock systems. Forage is still one of the most effective erosion prac tices available. In order to be prac tical for the farmer, ways must be found to make forage and the cattle that harvest it more profitable. The major problem being studied now is how to control fescue tox icosis. It was recently found that the fescue in most fields is infected with a fungus that apparently produces toxic compounds that reduce the growth and affect the health of cat tle. The 11 scientists and their support personnel work closely with the Soil Conservation Service and the Exten sion Service to transfer their research results to the agricultural community. Regardless of the kind of spray or chemical you select, better results occur when it is applied when the leaves are fully expanded and when the plants are actively growing. The following herbicides can be used to control the pesty plant: Glyphosate, sold as Round-Up and 2.4D. Cover the foliage thoroughly, until the spray begins to drip off. Avoid saturating the ground. If poison ivy is growing up the sides of trees, carefully cut the stems and treat stumps with one of the herbicides suggested. Several treatments will probably be necessary for complete control. Always follow label directions when using chemical control for poison ivy. Keep in mind that her bicides will kill other types of vegeta tion they contact. Shrubs, flowers and other ornamentals located near a treatment area may be injured from drifting spray. Farm Women Play Significant Role (Continued from Page 1) now more widowed farm women be ing left with the operation of the farm. In the past, many such women either sold the farm or hired so meone else to manage it. But the changing attitudes of socie ty toward women and the changing attitudes of women toward themselves have provided more op portunities for women to become in volved in operating and managing a farm. As a result, many widowed farm women are choosing to remain on the farm and manage and / or operate it themselves. The commercial "family" farm has undergone significant changes in the last 30-40 years, and farm women have played a major role in these changes. Today's successful farm depends as much on sound business and risk management skills as on the application of improved technology. "One of the farm wife's traditional roles has been bookkeeping and maintaining farm records on a daily basis," said Dr. Douglas Bachtel, UGA extension rural sociologist. As farming has become more capital in tensive, this role has necessitated the farm wife's becoming more involved in management and marketing deci sions. "I see this trend as a natural continuation of what the farm wife has been doing all along," Bachtel noted. As more women have become in volved in farm operation and management, there has been, and continues to be, a redefining of the concept of the "farm wife." Many women prefer to be called "farm woman" or just "farmer." The term "farm woman" encompasses the widowed, divorced or unmarried woman involved in agriculture, as well as the married woman who farms herself. Some married women even farm while their husbands work at a job away from the opera tion. Many farm women also are employed off the farm and therefore make an additional contribution to the farm income. Their benefits, health and retirement plans, and in surance help to provide a cushion against an oftentimes fluctuating farm income. Today's farm woman, whatever her role in the operation, is actively involved in many aspects of running a farm. Many farm men credit their spouse as the key to their success. Both the past and present activities of farm women have contributed to the success of agriculture today. As more women enter farming and adopt new production and manage ment techniques, they will be able to make an even greater contribution to our nation's farm industry. Blueberries, like those shown here at Nepenthe Farms in Walton County, are just one of many crops available at pick-your-own operations located throughout the state. See pages eight and nine for a listing of some of these operations. Handicraft Edition The next handicraft edi tion of the MARKET BULLETIN will be publish ed July 24.
