FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol.71, No. 21 Wednesday, May 22, 1985 County Agents Help Farmers The Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents represents the University of Georgia in nearly every county in the state. Your local Extension agent is probably a member of our group. The largest of its type in the nation, some 431 strong, our association works to support agriculture. Representing your land grant college, j USDA and your | local county, our members are available to assist you. The Extension service is an educational arm of agriculture that supports teaching and research conducted throughout our state. We realize that agriculture is vital to our state's economy and is Georgia's largest and most important industry. The future of Georgia your future is tied to the future of Georgia farmers and agribusinessmen. Our guest columnist this week is Larry W.' Thomas, President of the Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents, P.O. Box 1385, Dalton 30720. We often take for granted the efficiency of our farmers, which provides an abundance of food at reasonable prices. For example, the productivity of our farmers makes it possible for the rest of us to select from a variety of jobs and lifestyles. At the beginning of this century one farmer grew enough food for seven people. Today, this farm worker produces enough food for 80 half of whom live in other countries. Thanks to Georgia farmers and their counterparts across the nation, you and I spend an average of 16 percent of our take home pay for food. The rest of the world spends between 17 and 60 percent. In Russia, for example, more than 50 percent of the family income goes for food. In Georgia and many parts of our country, agriculture is big business. Georgia ranks at the top in production of peanuts, pecans, and poultry products. Other significant Georgia agricultural products include sweet potatoes, peaches, corn, wheat, soy- (Continued on Page 12) Go. Ag Department Monitors Treated Timber Products Some often overlooked components of Georgia's billion dollar forestry industry are pressure treated timber products including lumber, fence posts and landscape timber. Posts and rails alone are worth more than $2 million annually to the Georgia economy. To assure that consumers get the quality they pay for, the Georgia Treated Timber Products Act requires licensing by the Department of Agriculture of all Georgia treaters and dealers who treat timber outside the state, but sell in Georgia. It also requires that all chemical preservatives be applied to wood products under pressure to ensure proper penetration and retention of the preservative. All treated wood products must be marked with a brand approved by the Commissioner of Agriculture showing at a minimum the identity of the treater and the year of treatment. "Pressure treated timber has become very popular for use in outdoor construction projects," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "From time to time we've had reports of fence posts and landscape timbers delivered to points-of-sale without proper identification. This most often occurs when timber is sold out of trucks at places such as cattle sale barns." When pressure treated timber products do arrive at the retail location without the proper mark or brand, treaters are required to mark the lumber correctly, or replace it with marked products. Likewise, when (Continued on Page 12) ag consumer line I need help. Flies are taking over my house and surroundings. The main cause of this problem is my neighbor's poultry farm. Can you please have someone check their operation? One of our inspectors checked your neighbor's farm. The manager of the farm informed him that a county health official had already contacted him regarding the fly and odor problem. The manager has implemented a spray pro- gram recommended by the health official. In addition, our inspector checked his dead bird disposal pit and found it to be full. The manager is having a con- tractor come out and dig a new pit. They already were in the process of clean- ing up excess chicken litter. The county health department will be monitoring the operation for the next few weeks to help the producer with a fly control pro- gram. *** For answers and action on areas regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, caJI Ag Consumer Line, 1-800-282-5852 toll-free or 656-3645, Metro Atlanta. Irvin Opposes Action Of Committee Setting Tobacco Market Date Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin criticized the move made by the National Flue Cured Tobacco Committee, last week, to set tobacco market opening dates in Georgia. "Tobacco growers have enough problems with just trying to save the price support and production control program," explained Irvin. "We don't need people from outside our growing region trying to dictate when our markets will open." Irvin has written United States Secretary of Agriculture John JBlock expressing^ hisf opposition to The Advisory Committee's recommendation. Irvin urged that the method for selecting opening dates used in years past be continued. Traditionally, market opening dates have been agreed upon by growers in individual states who then give the date to the National Flue Cured Tobacco Advisory Committee. The Committee, in turn, passes the recommendation on to the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture. Historically, the recommendation is made around the first of July, and the Secretary has always adhered to the date as suggested by the states. The Georgia Tobacco industry was not contacted for its input prior to the the Committee action taken last week suggesting to the Secretary a July 24 opening date here. Irvin said he could see no advantage in establishing a market opening date at this time. Crop conditions could change dramatically in the more than two months before the time Georgia growers would likely have their crop ready for market. "It may be that the July 24 date is right on the money," said Irvin, "but our growers should be the ones who make the recommendation, not somebody hundreds of miles away who is completely out of our growing area." Handicraft Edition The handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published on June 26. Deadline for notices is June 12.
