FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 18 Wednesday, May 1, 1985 Bright Future Adapting to Meet Changing Needs Home demonstration agent, Extension home economist, county Extension agent-home economics. The title of a home economist with the Georgia Extension Service has changed over the years, as the people and their needs changed. For years, the Extension Service has provided farmers and their families with upto-date technical information. This information has been used to improve the income of the farmer through improved production procedures. His wife has used the information to make their resources go further and become, if not dollars, an asset and savings of energy, time or materials. Our guest columnist this week is Rose Simmons, President of the Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, 145 First Street, Macon 31201. But, change has occurred in the population and the workplace. According to census data, Georgia lost 5284 farms between 1974 and 1982. In addition the defirition of a farm shows us that the qualifications have changed. A fa I'm is now described as "any place from which $1000 or more of agricultural products were sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year." The result of this statement means that many people are working another job as well as "farming." In addition, it means that the "farm wife" is probably employed outside the home. The knowledge this family needs may be somewhat different due to increased education, and more diverse interests, as well as abilities. We were told, by a law passed in 1914, to get information to people, and to try to get them to use it. Our mission hasn't changed, but our methods and some of our topics have changed. (Continued on Page 16) For Aquaculture in Georgia In the years ahead, more farmers may be using nets rather than combines to harvest their crops. A growing demand for fish and fish products in the United States has created an expanding industry in the southern states aquaculture. aquaculture. As the general public has become more diet and nutrition conscious in recent years, more people have turned to fish and shellfish as high protein, low fat food sources. Fish foods also are becoming more popular in regions where they traditionally have not been consumed. Although aquaculture is defined as the controlled cultivation and harvest of aquatic plants and animals, U.S. production is concerned almost totally with raising fish and shellfish. In the southern states, aquaculture is centered around catfish production, although a good deal of shellfish farming is done in the Mississippi Delta region. 4-H Exchange Program On a nationwide basis, Mississippi is the largest commercial catfish producer, followed by Alabama and Arkansas. Georgia is presently ranked fourth or fifth. The three leading states have an advantage over Georgia in that their land area makes pond construction both easier and less expensive. "The aquaculture industry in Georgia really began growing about 1980," said Ronnie Gilbert, Extension fisheries specialist. Early catfish farmers came in at a time when there was little technology and education available to them. "A lot of people tried to get into the business in the 1960's and 1970's, explained Gilbert, "but they ignored the marketing aspects of the business. Most of those people got discouraged and there are relatively few of them still in the business." According to Gilbert, the aquaculture industry in Georgia was (Continued on Page 16) Kudzu Eradication Requires Persistence After many years of inactivity, the Georgia International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) has been revitalized and will send five young men and women to live on farms in foreign countries this summer. Georgia also will host students from several countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Norway and Belgium. The aims of the IFYE program are to provide cultural and educational experiences for farm youth and families. The IFYE program still needs farm families willing to host foreign students for at least two weeks during their stay in Georgia. Interested farm families should contact Gary Heusel or Katy Foster at the state 4-H office at (404) 542-1981. Pictured above are (left to right) Cindy Aldridge, IFYE to Belgium; Gary Heusel, State 4-H Specialist; Katy Foster, State 4-H Program Assistant; Eric Denty, IFYE to Spain; and Tammy Jackson, IFYE to Australia. Other IFYE participants this year include Wendy Krom going to the United Kingdom and Garnett Mellen going to India. Although kudzu may have its virtues, to many southern landowners, it is a downright menace. If kudzu is consuming your property, now is the time to take control measures. According to weed scientists, kudzu can be eradicated by utilizing the right chemicals at the right time. For example, the chemical glyphosate (sold as Roundup) is considered the safest and most effective for residential use. While kudzu is dormant, remove as many of the dead vines as possible, particularly from trees. When the foliage appears on the remaining vines, spray leaves with the glyphosate. The chemical will enter the plant through the foliage, move down the vine and start to kill the roots. The leaves, and vines should begin to die within a week to 10 days. If kudzu sprouts up again, let it grow some foliage and spray leaves once more. You may need to apply spray three or (Continued on Page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 1,1985 If you have questions regarding this category, call Edna Ho/landsworth 656-3727.
