FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 17 Wednesday, April 24, 1985 Suaoit Group Informs Ga. Consumers The Georgia Coalition for Consumer Education was formed two years ago to increase public understanding of the value of consumer education, and to encourage funding for quality consumer education programs. In addition, we strive to build a network of individuals within Georgia who care about consumer education and who want to work for it on the national, state, and local level. Our guest columnist this week is Susan Goddard, Coordinator of The Georgia Coalition for Consumer Education, P. O. Box 38107, Atlanta 30334. The organization, which is affiliated with the National Coalition, is composed of individuals from (Continued on Page 12) National Consumers Week April 22-28 "Consumers Bill of Rights" The Right to be Informed To be provided factual information in clear language, and to be protected against fraudulent advertising or misleading claims. The Right to Choose To have, as far as possible, access to a variety of products and services at reasonable prices, offered by a number of reliable businesses. The Right to be Heard To be assured that consumer in- terests will get a sympathetic hearing from the government and from business. The Right to Safety To be fully and accurately informed about products and services, so as to avoid a hazard to health, life and property. The Right to Integrity To receive honest and fair treat- ment in all dealings with business and industry. The Right to Respect To be treated considerately and courteously during the business relationship. The Right to Efficiency To receive service that is perform- ed in an efficient, dependable, and businesslike manner. Farmers Commit Acreage To Reduction Programs Farmers in Georgia have signed up 413,055 acres in acreage reduction programs. Nationally, farmers have committed a total of 165.6 million acres to diversion programs which require the converted cropland be devoted to conservation practices. Cotton, feed grains, rice and wheat were included in the program. Farmers who participate agree to reduce their plantings by at least 10 percent for feed grains and extra long cotton; 30 percent for wheat and upland cotton; and 35 percent for rice. Participating producers are eligible for U.S. Commodity Credit Corporation non-recourse loans and purchases and target price protection. Non-recourse loans, in effect, get minimum prices for farmers. Target prices approximate the average cost of producing a given commodity. Producers of feed grains, upland cotton, rice and wheat had the option to request 50 percent of their (Continued on Page 12) Presence of Bee Mite Leads To Quarantine of Ga. Apiary A south Georgia apiary has been put under quarantine by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, due to the presence of the honeybee acarine mite. The quarantine covers a two mile radius around the infested site and includes parts of Thomas, Mitchell and Grady counties. Two miles is accepted within the industry as twice the normal foraging range of bees. Movement of bees or equipment is prohibited from the quarantined area. The mite was found in one of 40 hives in one apiary owned by Donald Hall, who winters his bees on leased property in Thomas County. After discovering the presence of the mite, the Department placed the remainder of Hall's 350 colonies under quarantine. The finding of the mite in Georgia is particularly bad news for the state's approximately 80 honeybee shippers who face added restrictions when shipping their bees internationally. Canada, for instance, is a profitable market, but it requires two certificates that the mite is not pre- Georgia's honeybee queen and package industry was valued at $12 million in 1982, the latest figure available. sent in a particular apiary in states where the mite has been detected. Annual bedding plants, readily available at garden centers, such as Still Lake Nursery near Lawrenceville, and provide an appealing alternative for sprucing up your landscape. For additional information on planting annuals, turn to page 12. Are sweet potatoes and yams the same vegetable or are they cousins? Please give me their botanical names. In this country, the terms "yam" and "sweet potato" are used interchangeably, although, technically, there is a difference between the two plants. The sweet potatoes grown in the United States are all members of the genus Ipomoea, which is the morning glory family. There are many varieties of this plant, some tropical and some not, with the edible root part (the "potato") ranging in color from dark orange to light yellow-orange. The flowers are large and attractive and come in a variety of colors. The true yam is a member of the genus Dioscorea and is found only in tropical areas of the world. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 24, 1985 Dear Editor: I really enjoy the MARKET BULLETIN and have made a lot of friends selling flower seed to the neighboring counties. I always state "SASE" with my flower notices and hardly anyone ever sends one. Maybe you need to remind people that this means "self-addressed stamped envelope." I sell a great may flower seed in the MARKET BULLETIN and it would sure help matters a lot if everyone sent a SASE along with their orders. It would help me get them mailed out a lot sooner. Mrs. D. Brooks Route 1 Arm*uc*he*e, Georgia 30105 Dear Editor: I placed an ad in THE BULLETIN to get my small garden plowed up. I received nine calls from people who wanted to help me. One man was 72 years old and said he had a tiller I could use anytime, as he had suffered a heart attack and could no longer use it. I just wanted you to know how nice all the people I have met through THE BULLETIN have been.
