FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 16 Wednesday, April 17, 1985 Gmbut lilca, *. Conservation Needs Support We're now in exceptional times for soil and water conservation efforts. A few short weeks from now Soil Stewardship Week will be observed nationwide. The theme of the May 12-19 observance is "Tomorrow Together." Also, this year is the fiftieth year of organized soil and water conservation efforts which began with the formation of the Soil Conserva- tion Service back in 1935. That's the federal agency which works through our Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Districts to give farmers and landowners everywhere help in putting conservation practices on the ground. Our guest columnist this week is Graham Liles, Jr., Executive Director, Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Committee, 624 South Milledge Avenue, P.O. Box 8024, Athens 30603. Then we have the new publication, "Georgia's Land: Its Use and Condition" by the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee and the SCS. It contains data from the most recent National Resources Inventory showing that cropland erosion across Georgia is unacceptably high. Erosion continuing at these levels on much of Georgia's cropland is sure to begin cutting production if it hasn't already. The final part of this unique combination of circumstances is the efforts by the current administration in Washington to drastically cut programs which help farmers and landowners in the expensive and lengthy business of protecting the land against erosion. So, we have Soil Stewardship Week reminding us of the need to conserve and protect the soil. We have the fiftieth anniversary of one of the agencies which has played an absolutely vital role in bringing back the nation's land to a productive state. We have new data showing that more important work needs to be done and that continued erosion (Continued on Page 16) Georgia Hog Inventory Drops to Record Low A new record low inventory of all hogs and pigs on Georgia farms was reported recently by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. As of March 1,1985, there was a total of 1,150,000 head, eight percent less than a year earlier. The previous record low of 1,200,000 head was set just last quarter. "Farmers have decreased production due to the present low profitability of hogs," said Mike Hammer, assistant statistician in charge at the Crop Reporting Service. j^Wji;j^J^?*3j^j?tj&i*^<'^*^*mfg>w"im''mi""*^* ttfettWil*:^^^^ The highest number of hogs on record in Georgia reached 2,360,000 in 1979. Although the number of hogs has decreased in recent years, hogs remain an important Georgia commodity. Conservation Tillage Provides Option For Erosion Control Although soil conservation and good soil management are not new philosophies, a growing concern for soil quality and the farmers' need to reduce production costs have created an increased interest in conservation tillage. According to the Conservation Tillage Information Center (CTICj in Fort Wayne, Indiana, acreage farmed with conservation tillage has grown from less than five percent of total U. S. cropland in 1970 to 31 percent in 1983. The Center also says the U. S. Department of Agriculture projects that as much as ninety percent of America's cropland may be farmed with conservation tillage by the year 2010. In 1983, about 42 percent of Georgia's total cropland was farmed using some type of conservation tillage. Any tillage and planting system that retains at least 30 percent residue on the soil surface prior to planting is classified as a conservation tillage system. Previous crop residue helps to slow erosion by breaking the impact of rain drops on the soil and slowing run off. The residue also reduces water evaporation and allows more rainfall to soak into the ground, thus creating up to two inches more soil water to help growing crops through dry, stress periods. According to the CTIC, when conservation till methods are combined with other soil-conserving practices, soil erosion can be reduced by as much as 90 percent. In the spring, when soil moisture is usually greatest, high machinery traffic can cause soil compaction. This can lead to poor plant growth and reduced yields. Conservation tillage reduces trips through the field which helps prevent soil compaction and lowers fuel costs as well. Before embarking on a conservation tillage proram, there are a few important factors to consider. Although conservation tillage does (Continued on Page 16) Although the drop in hog production may be drastic, marketing experts say it is not rare. "Georgia hog production has had a history of expanding and contracting more than the rest of the country," explained John McKissick, livestock and grain marketing expert with the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. According to McKissick, a lot of new producers got into the business when market prices were high, hoping for a good profit. "They spent a lot of money getting set up for the hog business," he said, "and they just couldn't afford to keep operating when prices fell." (Continued on Page 16) Ga. Products Exhibited At NASDA Food Show Five Georgia food companies are among more than 400 exhibitors participating in the April 22-24 National Food and Agricultural Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri. United States exporters from the food, forestry, seed and nursery industries will be selling to over 1,500 foreign buyers at the show which is sponsored by the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA). Georgia exhibitors include Diago Mexican Foods, Inc. of Gainesville; Castleberry's Food Co. of Augusta; Munch King of Forest Park; Tom's Foods Inc. of Columbus; and the Georgia Blueberry Association of Alma. Diago, Munch King and the Blueberry Association were exhibitors at the first NASDA Food Show which was held in Atlanta in May, 1983. Direct contact with foreign buyers resulting in substantial sales for the companies was cited as a reason for their return .to the NASDA show. This event is the only (Continued on Page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 17, 1985 Dear Editor: I would like to express my appreciation to all those who make the Agriculture Day Contests possible. Preparing an entry for the sketch contest these past two years has been a labor of love for me. Just completing entries in which I had enough confidence to mail has been an achievement I felt proud of. I can't tell you how thrilled I was to be a runner up both years! Thanks again for providing me the opportunity to use what skill I have to express a love and interest in the agriculture of this state.
