r FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture r^ Market Bulletin Vol. 71, No. 12 Wednesday, March 20, 1985 National Agriculture Week TMHHUJ 9*uw Farmers Deserve Our Gratitude Since March 20th is National Agriculture Day, I think it is important that we take time to recognize the tremendous contributions of our nation's farmers, especially our Georgia farmers. The purpose of \ Ag Day is to proi vide an opportunity i for the non-farming I consumer to learn more about the iworld's largest i commercial indus11 try-American agrij culture. The DeI partment of Agri- culture has selected as this year's theme, "Agriculture-Your Future Depends On It." How true this is! We are aware that farmers provide the food we need to survive. But we often fail to realize how many jobs are dependent upon the farmer. The economic foundation of our country is built on agriculture. For example, the combined agricultural industry accounts for $609.5 billion or 20 percent of our nation's Gross National Product (GNP). Included in the agricultural industry are farming, transporting, processing, manufacturing and retailing of food and fiber. One farmworker creates jobs for six non-farm workers. With this "ripple effect" it is not surprising that more than 22 million people, 20 percent of America's work force, are employed in agriculture or related industries. Americans are paying less for food now than they did 20 years ago. We also spend far less of our disposable income for food than any other nation. In 1983, Americans spent an average of only 16 percent of disposable income for food, compared with as much as 60 to 70 percent in some countries. One farm worker now provides food and fiber for 79 people, compared with 31 people in 1963. In the (Continued on Page 9) March 17-23 Ag Day Photo and Sketch Winners The first place entry in the photo contest (above) was submitted by Bill Hawkins of Waynesboro. "This is a picture of my one horse wagon I bought through the Market Bulletin and a horse I sold through it," he explained. A typical field in Georgia may resemble a moonscape more than ground under cultivation, explained Karen Lewis who submitted the first place sketch (below). According to Ms. Lewis, this irrigation rig is just one example of the progress being made on the farm front. Additional Ag Day Contest Winners Featured on Page 9 Tobacco Proposal Submitted To Merge Markets A proposal to combine Georgia's Valdosta and Hahira tobacco markets has been placed in the Federal Register by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Growers who sold tobacco at the two markets in 1984 will be asked to decide in a referendum if the merger will take place. Ballots will be received by mail. To be valid, the ballot must be completed, returned and postmarked on or between March 25 and March 29. Two-thirds of those voting must approve the merger for it to pass. "If the two markets are merged, tobacco warehouses in the ValdostaHahira market would have more frequent sales each week, allowing growers to move their tobacco more conveniently," explained Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The Valdosta tobacco market ranked number eight in poundage designated for sale in Georgia last year, while the Hahira market ranked number 13. Had the two markets been combined, they would have ranked fourth in poundage designated. Fort Valley Project port Valley State College has been awarded a contract by the USDA to provide intensive training and management assistance to 120 small acreage farmers in central Georgia. The Farmers Home Administration identified farms, which with some assistance, can build upon existing management skills and produce enough income to maintain their farming operations. Helping 'Each Other Dear Editor. I have recreated a design of an old fashioned doll, the Lit- tle Red Riding Hood doll. The doll actually is three-in-one, as shown by the photographs below. When Little Red Riding Hood is turned over, you will find Grandmother. And, under Grandmother's hat is the big bad wolf. I made up the design myself and have enjoyed advertising my creations in the MARKET BULLETIN'S handicraft edition. Helen Carroll 1919 Martin Road, SW Marietta, Georgia 30060 Dear Editor: I am making a quilt which I call my advertising quilt. If any of your readers have advertising patches on their old shirts or caps that they don't want (for example, "Bell Telephone," "Goodyear," etc.), I would be very thankful to receive them. Sallie M. Shepherd Route 2, Allatoona Road Car*ters* vil*le, Georgia 30120 Dear Editor Do any of your readers have land near Atlanta with an unoccupied barn or farm building? I am an artist needing studio space for painting. Light, water and electricity must be available and I prefer something north of Atlanta. Any help would be appreciated. Erin Sherman 4306 North Shallowford Road, C-3 Chamblee, Georgia 30341 Phone: (404) 458-6898 Farmers Deserve Our Gratitude (Continued from Page 1) last 20 years, agricultural productivity per hour worked has increased more than three times faster than industrial productivity per hour worked. Through their efficiency, farmers have provided consumers with high quality, nutritious food at affordable prices. However, these prices have come at the expense of the farmer. In spite of all their contributions, farmers are faced with surpluses, low commodity prices, shrinking export markets and are burdened by debt. In the last 10 years, farmers have felt the pinch of inflation like everyone else. Wage rates for hired labor have increased 114 percent and tractors and self-propelled machinery cost 200 percent more. Taxes are up 78 percent. Overall, the average cost of materials, interest, taxes and farm wages has increased 125 percent in the last 10 years. Nationally, farmers now pay about $4.1 billion in farm real estate taxes annually, $514 million in personal property taxes, and about $344 million in sales taxes. That averages out to about $3,600 per farm. The real problem with this is the farmer gets less now, on the average, for his product than he did 20 years ago. It's no wonder our farmers are struggling to survive. Farming is a business and producers must be allowed to make a fair return on their investment in order to maintain our nation's food supply and standard of living. This Agriculture Day, let us remember that agriculture and the farmer provide the economic base on which our country thrives. Public consciousness must be raised to make people realize that farm programs don't subsidize the farmers. Consumers benefit by having a variety of foods available at affordable prices. If farmers are not allowed a fair return for their investment and are forced out of business, the consumer ultimately will be the loser.
