FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture FB Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 7 Wednesday, February 15, 1984 BrtHowell Production Woes Make Eggs More Precious "Which came first. . . the chicken or the egg?" That's a question almost as old as the egg itself; but, one thing for sure, whichever came first, the egg has been used by man as a source of food for many centuries. You probably use eggs every day, either as a main course, or as ingredients in your favorite dish without giving them much thought. Perhaps this is the reason that Governor Joe Frank Harris has proclaimed February as "Egg Month in Georgia!" It's an annual event that recognizes the egg and Georgia egg producers. Unfortunately, there aren't as many of either to salute this year. Due to severe financial strains from high production costs and low retail prices as well as an extremely hot summer, many Georgia egg producers have gone out of business. (Our guest columnist this week is Robert N. Howell, Executive Director of the Georgia Egg Commission, State Farmers' Market, Forest Park 30050.)_________ With them, have gone millions of hens laying more than a billion eggs each year. While Georgia still is considered the second largest egg producing state in the nation (based on 1982 the latest figures) hen numbers have dropped from about 21 million in 1979, to the present 14 million layers! At the same time, the number of egg producers in Georgia dropped from approximately 180 to today's record low of only 112. At the end of 1983, the number of eggs on the market had dropped significantly, and with the increased demand for holiday cooking, egg prices began an upward swing that soon reached the highest level ever. As to how long the prices will remain high, that depends on the number of eggs available and how many are purchased by the consumer. It's a simple situation of supply and demand. Most believe the (Continued on Page 9) Officials Act to Protect Ga. Poultry Industry Fifteen show chickens and five doves moved into Georgia illegally from a federal quarantine area in Maryland and have been destroyed because they were possible carriers of a deadly avian influenza virus. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said destruction of the birds was necessary to protect Georgia's $1. billion poultry industry from possible contamination. The disease already has caused the destruction of more than 10 million infected chickens in four northeastern states in attempts to eradicate it. The owner says he was unaware of the federal quarantine. Federal and state investigators are gathering evidence about the owner's movement of the birds, and he may face civil or criminal charges depending upon the results of the investigation. Although it appears there was no contact with any local birds, and the owner's home is not in a poultry producing area, state and federal officials believe destruction of the birds was necessary to assure containment of any disease hazard. Tree Symbolizes Georgia's Strength The massive live oak, native to Georgia, is a symbol of strength, beauty and endurance. For this reason, the Georgia General Assembly selected it as the official state tree in 1937. Although the live oak now is used (Georgia Arbor Day is celebrated the third Friday in February each year. In honor of this day, we are spotlighting Georgia's official state tree the live oak.) predominantly as a shade tree, it has played an important role in Georgia's past. It was prized during the era of wooden ships. Live oak (Continued on Page 9) Livestock Shows Keep Youth Busy When was the last time you visited one of the Georgia Junior Livestock Shows? In February and March, 4-H'ers and FFA members from all over Georgia will exhibit their livestock in eight different shows. It all starts February 18 with market hog shows at Athens, Macon and Tifton. The top end of the hogs then will be exhibited at the state show on February 20 at the Macon Fairgrounds. Over 1,000 market hogs have been entered. On February 24 and 25 the state heifer show will be at the Sunbelt Expo site at Moultrie. Showmanship will be on Friday evening, followed by the heifer show on Saturday, February 25. Over 450 heifers of 14 breeds will be competing. The area junior steer shows start on March 23 at the S.E. Arena in Unadilla. The other area steer show will be in Athens on March 24. There are 700 steers entered in these two shows. The top end of these steers will show at the state steer show on March 25 and 26 in Athens. For details of each show, contact your local Extension agent or vocational agriculture teacher. Conference Features Agribusiness Topics Individuals involved in ag-related businesses will want to attend the Georgia Agribusiness Conference, February 16, at the Rural Development Center, Tifton. The daylong seminar will feature forecasts, updates, trends and innovations which can be used to enhance farm and agribusiness management. Sessions will include a teleconference with U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and a keynote address by Dr. Fielding Reed, past president of the Potash-Phosphate Institute. Other program participants will represent farming, banking, legal, educational and corporate areas of agriculture. The program is co-sponsored by (Continued on Page 9) Soil Preparation Promotes Successful Garden Proper soil preparation is the first step to a successful garden. It should be placed at the top of your list of garden chores for early spring. Fall is the ideal time to prepare garden soil for early spring planting. But, if you let it slip by or have just decided to establish a garden, you can tackle the task two or three weeks prior to planting. The first step is to remove diseased and woody plant materials left from last year's garden. When done in the fall, clean plant remains can be left to add organic matter to the soil. But in the spring, it should be removed completely since there is insufficient time for it to break down before planting. After debris is discarded, dig and turn the soil to a depth of eight to 12 inches. You may use a spade, rotary (Continued on Page 12) Equine Meeting The State Equine Advisory Board is sponsoring an open forum for all horse owners and breeders on March 25 at Henderson's Atlanta Auction. We found that many birds enjoy a mixture of equal parts of sunflower seed, chicken scratch feed and peanut hearts. But we have been unable to find a source of peanut hearts in the Atlanta area and that is sad. Can any of your readers give me a lead to a source for this vital ingredient? Hubert Blalock 330 Smokey Road Newnan, Georgia 30263 Dear Editor: I have nearly all the recipes that have appeared in the MARKET BULLETIN. Since I don't cook as much as I used to, I would like to let somebody have them who would put them to good use. The MARKET BULLETIN has received many inquiries regarding our policy about advertising lawnmowers. Regrettably, space does not permit us to advertise lawnmowers in the BULLETIN. The only mowers which are permitted are those which are used for agricultural purposes, i.e., hay mowing, bushhogging, orchard / pasture mowing, etc. Mower attachments for garden tractors are allowed as well as any equipment which has a 44-inch cut or more. Attention Farm Machinery Advertisers Advertisers are now required to submit a statement with farm machinery notices. The statement should state that the equipment is owned by the advertiser and has been used on his or her individually owned or leased farm. Ads received without this statement will be returned to the advertiser. 2000 Ford tractor $4200, 5 shank all purpose plow $340, dbl. bottom $340, 3 pt. hitch, carry all $120. Hugh Tlsinger, Decatur.
