FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 50 Wednesday, December 12, 1984 lallliliiii Allotment Programs in Jeopardy 4-H Gives Youth Under'85 Farm Bill Proposal Chance to Grow When 4-H first started, it was centered around agriculturally oriented project activities. At that time the South, especially Georgia, had a very high rural population. Over the years, however, with the increasing ur- banization and a decreasing num- ber of young peo- ple living in rural areas, plus diver- sification into many agri- business areas, 4-H leaders began to recognize a need for enlarging the scope of the program. They also recognized the new interests being directed toward 4-H by urban friends; therefore, (Our guest columnist this week is Mary Frances Ussery, President of the Georgia 4-H Clubs, Route 1, Box 126, Milan 31060). membership was opened to all young people who desired to join and participate. Today, along with many agricultural and homemaking project activities, there are countless other opportunities for youth. These range from technical computer-age projects and excellent leadership programs to safety projects, home improvement, small-bore rifle competition, and pet care. Under the dedicated leadership of county Extension agents, district and state 4-H program personnel and the UGA Extension Service, Georgia 4-H has been recognized as one of the top youth programs in the nation. Georgia's 9,915 volunteer 4-H leaders also give free support to the total 4-H organization. In addition, 4-H members must never overlook the "donors," who sponsor so many 4-H awards and events. To each of these groups and individuals alike, goes a warm and sincere "thank you"!! this auxiliary support has made Georgia 4-H among the nation's best. Let me invite each boy and girl in Georgia to join this great characterbuilding organization. Get involved in 4-H work, and strive to reach the top. Secretary of Agriculture John Block announced the Reagan Administration plans to specifically abolish the existing peanut and tobacco programs in a meeting last week with Commissioner Tommy Irvin and the Executive Board of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA). Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, vice president of NASDA, is concerned about the news from Secretary Block. ag consumer line . . . "Georgia would be particularly hurt because we produce the bulk of the nation's peanuts 50 percent of the U.S. supply this year." The Administration's plans will be presented to Congress for consideration in the 1985 Farm Bill. Consider Various Alternatives When Selecting Christmas Tree Christmas is just around the corner. If you are planning to include a "real" Christmas tree in your holiday festivities, there are several options available. Pre-cut Trees Pre-cut Christmas trees are available at Georgia State Farmers' Markets, tree lots and other locations throughout the state. When selecting a pre-cut tree, be sure and choose one that is fresh. The needles should be limber to the touch. In addition, very few needles should drop when the tree is bounced or shaken. Look for a tree which has the traditional triangular taper. By shopping for your tree during daylight hours, defects are more likely to be noticed. Cut-Your-Own Trees If you want to add a touch of tradition to your holidays, cutting your own tree provides an appealing option. Cut-your-own Christmas tree farms are scattered throughout the state. Information on the location of these operations is available by calling the MARKET BULLETIN office. Although varieties of Georgia grown Christmas trees are rather limited (Virginia and White pine compose the bulk of the trees grown], cutting your own tree offers several advantages. You do not have to wonder about freshness when you have cut the tree yourself. In addition, most operations offer acres of trees from which to choose "just the right one." Perhaps the most important advantage is that the entire family can become involved in the cutting ritual. Cut your own Christmas tree farms are scattered throughout the state. Living Trees You may prefer to use a living Christmas tree. These trees can be purchased from nursery and garden centers. White pine, Scotch pine, spruces and firs are among the varieties available. In order to incorporate the tree in your home landscape after the holidays, follow these guidelines: * Select a healthy appearing tree. * Be sure the balled and burlapped root system is intact. * Room temperature must be maintained lower to reduce moisture loss. * Make sure the ball remains moist during the entire stay in the home. But, do not place the ball in a container of water for any extended period of time. * Avoid heat injury from Christmas tree lights. After Christmas, plant your tree as you would any balled and burlapped shrub. Keep in mind that many trees are out of their normal habitat in some areas of Georgia. Due to this factor, they may never reach the normal mature size.
