FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 49 Wednesday, December 5, 1984 consumer line. Communicating New Concepts The Georgia Homemakers Council has selected a special theme this year "Communicating New Concepts." With our many ongoing projects, we are striving to put this theme into action. For example, every organization needs effective leadership. With the assistance of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension [Service, plans have been formulated to offer a homemaker leadership training workshop. The workshop will be provided in each of our five districts early in 1985. Funds to finance this training were derived from the sale of our Council's cook book. Our guest columnist this week is Mary E. Williams, President of the Georgia Homemakers Council, P.O. Box 416, Centerville 31028). __ ___ ___ ___ ___ Our cultural arts chairman recently has compiled a brochure featuring the legend of Georgia's official state flower, the Cherokee rose. Our plans are to furnish this brochure to Georgia history teachers for distribution to eighth grade students throughout the state. In addition, our goal is to plant Cherokee roses in each of Georgia's 159 counties. The Council also is involved in other projects which focus on the important areas of citizenship, safety, health, family life and public information. Besides communicating new ideas, the Council feels strongly about recognizing the capabilities of its members. At our annual meeting, we focus on the many talents of our members. Our "Cotton Creations" contest gives members the opportunity to utilize their handiwork skills. Sponsored by the Georgia Cotton Commission, handmade items are judged and cash awards distributed to the best. The annual dress revue allows homemakers to model garments (Continued on Page 12) ^a^ip^ Does my Chinese chestnut plant need a partner to produce nuts? Our horticulturist says the plant will produce a few nuts alone but needs the presence of a nearby Chinese chestnut tree for cross-pollination to produce a good quanity of nuts. *** Can egg whites be frozen? Yes. To freeze egg whites, pour them into freezer containers, seal tightly, label with the number of whites, the date and freeze. If you like, first freeze each white in an ice cube tray and then transfer the frozen cubes to a freezer container. I'm program chairperson for my garden club. Is there someone in your department who can come out and talk to our organization about the services of the Georgia Department of Agriculture? Yes. If you will call the number listed below, we will be more than happy to have a speaker come out and give a presentation to your organization. g You may call Consumer Services toll-free at 1-800-282-5852 if you have ques- tions or complaints regarding products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. You may write Consumer Services, Room 314, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Pay Attention to Package Dates Pecan Production When Purchasing Food Products Most packaged food products have open or code dating. The purpose of the date is to help assure that you buy and use fresh food. Many food processors and retailers use open dates on perishable and semi-perishable foods. The date may be shown alphanumerically (Oct. 23), or in numbers only (10-23). It may or may not include the year. If it does, 1984 may be shown just as four. Several types of open dates may be used on food items: Pull Date This is the last day the retail store may sell the item as fresh. The date is designed to allow you a reasonable amount of time to store and use the product at home, even if it is purchased on the pull date. How long the product should be offered for sale and how much home storage time is allowed are determined by the processor, based on his knowledge of the product and its shelf life. When you see "Sell by Oct. 23" on the package, it does not imply you should net use the product after that date. The date represents the last day of fresh sale so you will have time to store and use it at home. Freshness Date This shows how long the processor thinks his product will be at (Continued on Page 12) Swine Course Features Production Techniques Georgia purebred swine producers are invited to attend the Master Purebred Swine Breeders Workshop scheduled for January 3, 1985. Registration for the workshop starts at 10 a.m. at the Rural Development Center in Tifton while the program begins at 10:30. Workshop topics will include selecting breeding stock for seedstock and commercial herds, estimating breeding values, selling more breed stock and feeding boars and gilts. For more information on registering for this workshop, contact Erik Cleveland at P.O. Box 1209, Tifton 31793 or call 912-386-3407. Compared with other orchard crops, Georgia's commercial pecan industry is relatively new. It has developed from three and four tree orchards to its present magnitude primarily during this century. Georgia currently leads the nation in pecan production. In 1983, the state produced 100 million pounds of pecans valued at $62,850,000. This year, production is forecast at 115 million pounds, 15 percent above 1983 production, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Pecan harvest is underway in many areas of the state.
