FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Com miss toner Georgia Department of Agr/cu/fure Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 48 Wednesday, November 28, 1984 Help Enforce Vet Drug Laws The Boards of Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine are stepping up enforcement against wholesale and retail, over-the-counter sale of prescription veterinary drugs that are being distributed through mobile vans, mail order, feed and seed stores and other illicit means. The Boards are joined by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Federal Food and Drug Administration in this effort to continue to assure consumers that no drug residues, which could be detrimental to public health, are found in the meat and food products purchased from food outlets. Current medical evidence indicates that serious human health Our guest columnist this week is N. W. Chism, Director of the Georgia Drugs .and Narcotics Agency, 166 Pryor Street, SW, Room 503, Atlanta 30303.) problems are occurring from the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in food animals. Medical doctors have discovered antibiotic resistant infections in humans caused by eating meats containing certain drugs. Serious blood diseases also have resulted. We are aware that many of the feed and seed stores do not realize that they are illegally selling drugs that require a prescription from a veterinarian and that only licensed practitioners can distribute and possess these items. Any outlets that are in illegal possession should cease distribution immediately and return the drugs to the place of purchase. The Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency is hopeful that a warning will be sufficient and that voluntary compliance will be forthcoming. After notification and warnings, the Boards of Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine then will make cases and take necessary legal action against individuals that continue to violate the drug laws of Georgia. Any veterinary drug that carries either of the following two labels can be only possessed and sold by a veterinarian or pharmacist, on the prescription of a veterinarian: "Caution: Federal law restricts this drug (Continued on Page 8) Counties Reviewed For Disaster Aid Farm Front The State Emergency Board met The Board found that 53 counties last week and reviewed damage have sustained losses of greater than The University of Georgia has announced the release of a high-yielding, parasiteresistant soybean variety bearing the name of a Confederate general. The Gordon soybean resists soybean cyst nematode race 3 and three kinds of root knot nematodes: Southern peanut and Javanese. The variety also shows tolerance to stem canker and chloride toxicity. It is susceptiele to peanut mottle virus, Seed organizations in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina will release the new variety in limited quantities next year. Corn Short Course Focuses on Profit A Corn Short Course will be held at the Rural Development Center in Tifton on December 19. The program, sponsored by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the Cooperative Extension Service, will begin at 8:20 a.m. and adjourn at 3:00 p.m. Discussions will include corn for profit, corn for feed, trends in soil and plant analysis, and the effects of fertilization, diseases, weeds and irrigation on profit. There is a $3 registration fee. The reports were forwarded to U. S. Secretary of Agriculture John Block who will make the final determination of eligibility. Farmers who suffered production losses in the 106 counties which do not appear to meet the 30 percent county loss federal requirement may be eligible to receive individual assistance. I read in a magazine that there is a number you can call to get informa- Revisions Proposed For Swine Grading tion on preparing your holiday turkey. Do you have that number? The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed revisions in the national grading standards for slaughter barrows and gilts and pork carcasses. The proposed revisions were prompted by improvements in the hogs which are now being produced. The toll-free "Turkey Talk Line" number is 1-800-323-4848. You may call this number any day from now until December 24 to get quick answers regarding turkey prepara- Current research data indicates that a tremendous change has taken place in pork production in the past 15 years. As a result of improvements made in breeding, feeding and in other areas, pork farmers are producing a higher percentage of leaner, meatier hogs. These goals would be achieved by basing the grade on backfat thickness over the last rib, with an adjustment up or down a grade for superior or inferior muscling, respectively. The proposed grades would more nearly reflect current industry practices and would make market reports, based on the official grades, more meaningful to producers. tion questions. *** I opened a can of chili that was so greasy my family could not eat it. There was very little meat in the product. How much meat should chili contain? Chili must contain at least 40 percent meat, however, ground beef contains up to 30 percent fat. The projected date of implementation for the proposed revised standards has been set for January 1, 1985. Will you please identify this substance I found on my scuppernong vine? A realignment of grade lines is necessary to insure that the program continues to serve as a useful tool to sort hogs and pork carcasses by yield of lean cuts and value. The primary goals of the proposed revised standards include the following: (1) to simplify the application of standards, (2) to provide grades which more accurately reflect actual yields of the lean cuts of hogs produced today, and (3) to more evenly distribute carcasses among several grades. Gwinnett 4-H Begins Blueberry Sale Gwinnett County 4-H is selling top quality, three year old blueberry bushes. Three choice varieties are available including Climax, Tifblue, and Delite. The plants are $6 each. Call the Gwinnett Extension office at 962-1482 to place your order. The substance you submitted was identified as a praying mantis co- coon. *** You may call Consumer Services toll-free at 1-800-282-5852 if you have questions or problems regarding products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
