FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 47 Wednesday, November 21, 1984 This Thanksgiving Let's Look Ahead Many of us at Thanksgiving take time to reflect and recollect about the year past. This day serves as a good opportunity for us to express our gratitude for the beautiful world in which we live, and for the abundant life of Earth. The year in agriculture has been one of plenty for many Georgia commodities, particularly peaches, apples, peanuts and cotton, but we did have poor results with our late soybeans and some pecans. This year, however, perhaps even more than in years past, I want to look ahead. When the U. S. Congress reconvenes in 1985, it will be considering a major new farm bill that will have wide reaching effects on American agriculture. Many of us have noted that agriculture is at a crossroads, a turning point, and this new farm bill will set the journey's course. With the benefit of knowledge, cooperation and unity from the able agricultural community, our Congressional leaders will chart a future course in tune with the times and responsive to agriculture's unique needs. Here in Georgia, our Governor has just appointed a committee to study the feasibility of building a major state fair and agribusiness exposition in central Georgia. I think such a facility has long been needed, and if (Continued on Page 16) INSIDE Letters to the Editor. ......... page 2 Ga. In response to producer concern, Commissioner oi Agriculture Tommy Irvin re- quested the e*tra survey. Pecan surveys are usually condtjcted Qiily in September, October and Deceinber each year. Harris asked the group to have a formal proposal ready by December 31, in time for possible legislative action during the 1985 session of the Georgia General Assembly. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was named to the task force, and has served on an ad hoc committee that has been working for 15 months on preliminary plans for the project. The group envisions a facility which could be built in phases, and Cut Your Own Tree List Featured would host livestock shows, horticulture exhibits, forestry exhibits, 4-H and Future Farmers of America events and more. Governor Harris said, depending upon final plans the Exposition would cost between $8-$20 million. "A state fair site would serve Georgia's agriculture well and has long been needed," explained Irvin. "I think that later the Governor will look upon this as one of the highlights of his administration." According to Governor Harris, state fairs in Florida and the Carolinas bring in about 500,000 people and nearly $1 million in revenue. "If an exposition center is proven to be a realistic and feasible concept here in Georgia, I can see that it will have an even broader potential than was originally envisioned," said Harris. "I believe a State Fair and Agribusiness Exposition could contribute tremendously by revitalizing in-state travel and providing a new destination for regional and national tourists." Jack and Sauney Pippin are bothers and owners and operators of the 1,100 acre County Line Farm. Their farm has become an extensive example of established conservation practices which control erosion and reduce water pollution. The Pippin brothers have worked with the Lamar County Soil and Water District, U.S. Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service, U.S. Soil Conservation Service and the State Soil and Water Conservation Service to continue their conservation plans. In 1982, -the Lamar County Soil and Water Conservation District chose a portion of the Pippin's farm as the site for "Rebirth of a Farm," a conservation restoration project. "Rebirth of a Farm" has been used as an educational demonstration project for thousands of visitors, including other farmers who are learning what they might do to stop erosion on their land. The Pippin brothers utilize their land nearly every way possible. Their four farm ponds supply water for crop irrigation, produce catfish (7,000 pounds last year), and serve as nesting sites for ducks and other water fowl. All of their crops are on (Continued on Page 16) A $10,000 check is waiting for the first place winner in the National Chicken Cooking Contest, sponsored by the National Broiler Council. An additional $10,000 in prize money will be awarded to the four final finalists. A December 31 deadline has been set for entries in the 36th national contest. One finalist from each state and the District of Columbia will be selected and announced in March. Each of the 51 finalists will receive an expense paid trip to Asjrville, North Carolina, to participate in the National Cook-Off planned for May 15-17, 1985. I sent many cards out and received many grateful acknowledgements. I hope you do it again this year. A Valdosta Georgia Reader *** Dear Editor: Last Christmas I submitted the names of Martha Wilson and Effie Morris to be included in the list of shut-ins. They received so many beautiful cards and letters along with many sweet notes and drawings from children. Each day during the holiday season, mail time was something for them to look forward to. I wish to thank each and everyone for taking the time to include them as part of their holiday celebration. I also appreciate the MARKET BULLETIN for making it possible. Christine L. Wilson 170 Powers Ferry Rd., SE Marietta, Georgia 30067 Remember Special People During the past two holiday seasons, the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN has published requests for friendship cards and letters from our elderly and shut-in readers. We received many favorable comments such as the letters above. Many individuals received a deluge of mail from our thoughtful BULLETIN readers. Because of the happiness this correspondence brought to these special folks, we plan to again publish a list in the MARKET BULLETIN. If you would like to be included on this list, please send your name and complete address to the MARKET BULLETIN office no later than November 31. Due to space limitations, only requests from Georgia residents will be included and only one list will be published. Dear Editor: I recently wrote the MARKET BULLETIN asking your readers for some nutritious, quick recipes for a busy mother to feed her family. The response from your readers was overwhelming. I received so many wonderful letters, recipes and helpful hints that it is impossible for me to thank each personally. Please extend my heartfelt thanks to all who took their time to write and help me out. MARKET BULLETIN readers truly are a wonderful group of people. Not only did the recipes help me, but the kind letters of encouragement were a real joy to read. Thanks to all of you wonderful folks. Cherry Bradford Route 3, Benson Rd. Dallas, Georgia 30132 Dear Editor: After my letter about fried okra was printed in the MARKET BULLETIN, I received 85 letters, not counting some repeats. All of them from the goodness of peoples' hearts all about okra and all from home country. There was one anti-fry among all those letters an unsigned letter from Atlanta. Mrs. Paul Wofford of Marble Hill had this to say, "I don't remember ever going into a restaurant or cafeteria and seeing boiled okra on their menu. Fried, yes." Two ladies gave methods for stretching a small amount of okra, both involving boiling the okra and chopping or mashing it before mixing it with batter. Claire Cline of Greensboro calls her recipe, "Okra Lace Patties," and this is the way she does it: 10-12 pods fresh okra or one pint frozen 1/3 cup cornmeal and one half tablespoon flour plus salt and pepper. Boil okra until tender and pour off all but one third of the "pot licker." Mash or shred into a mush. Add cornmeal, flour and seasoning. Add by spoonful to hot grease. They should spread and become lacey. Thanks to everyone again for sharing their information on fried okra with me.
