FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 46 Wednesday, November 14, 1984 Farm and City Exchange Ideas Each year thousands of Georgians participate in Farm-City Week activities. This year will be no exception. Many counties throughout Georgia have been planning activities for months to celebrate this national event. Farm-City Week is in its 30th year of existence. This year's official week starts on Friday, November 16 and concludes on November 22, Thanksgiving Day. The purpose of Farm-City Week is to bring about a better understanding between rural and urban people, and to increase the knowledge and appreciation of each for the American way of life. Farm-City Week is an activity that has caught the imagination of farm, business, governmental and lay leaders alike. Our guest columnist this week is Horace E. Hudson, State Farm-City Week Chairman and Head of the Community Development Department, Cooperative Extension Ser vice, University of Georgia, Athens 30602). The necessity of closing the gap in understanding between the rural and urban segments of the American economy is a very real one. FarmCity Week has taken the lead in closing this gap through a concentrated exchange of ideas and information, and through widespread "get acquainted" affairs between farm folks and city folks. Examples of programs that took place last year are varied and tailored for each county. Morgan County had a Farm-Industrial Day tour. Farmers, businessmen and industrial leaders spent the day touring farms, businesses and industrial plants. Elbert County sponsored a banquet and honored the agribusiness and farmer-of-the-year. A display containing all the food a family of four eats in a year was exhibited in the Georgia Mall in Athens. Floyd County highlighted their 21st year of observance with a dinner attended by 231 farm and city residents. Last year Monroe County celebrated Farm-City Week with a Forestry Field Day, tour and (Continued on Page 12) %$i!$$$iii!^^ UBiiliMiliBiiiWliBB ':$& :iit-:S:^:::i^:Ui;;^:;.;:;:;.;:-;jt^;:^:;;|S^ii;i:ii: 'ifciJiii^Si: i:i:^:yS:v :': S: ??S?,\ S;S:S !^iiii^^iilliiliiipii^BilKli illit^ ~^ Satellite Laboratory Proposed To Serve South Georgia Farmers Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced plans for a proposed satellite laboratory. The laboratory, to be located at the Tifton State Farmers' Market, would be responsible for analyzing samples of pesticides, seed, feed, grain, fertilizer and for identifying aflatoxin in grain for the South Georgia region. "Because this region of Georgia is our biggest crop production area, it generates nearly two-thirds of all service and regulatory sampling," Irvin said in a morning press conference at the Tifton Farmers' Market. "With a full service laboratory in Tifton, our Department will be able to provide an increased level of service to the farmers of South Georgia, and at the same time enhance service in the laboratories remaining in Atlanta." Irvin proposed that planning, construction and staffing of the laboratory be funded over three fiscal years, and has requested $100,000 in his amended FY '85 budget to plan and design the building. Initial estimates place the size of the building at 11,400 square feet, with construction costs of approximately $75 per square foot. Construction would be completed in FY '86 with equipment, supplies and staffing completed in FY '87. Staffing would be accomplished with 15 new positions and by filling other positions through attrition from the Atlanta labs. (Continued on Page 12) Winning Entry Selected Georgia Cabbage Crop In Statement Contest With harvest currently underway, Georgia's cabbage fields are stirring with activity. Each year, four to five thousand acres are devoted to spring and fall cabbage production throughout the state. Although cabbage acreage may seem small when compared with other Georgia crops, the commodity is important, particularly in South Georgia. The bulk of the crop is produced in a five county area including Colquitt, Thomas, Brooks, Cook and Mitchell Counties. In fact, more cabbage is distributed through the State Farmer's Market in Moultrie than any other state market facility in Georgia. The quality of Georgia's cabbage is excellent this year. Be sure to enjoy this versatile, State-grown vegetable during the fall months by utilizing the delicious recipes featured in this week's Georgia Cooking column. Many excellent entries were submitted for the Georgia Agribusiness Council's second annual statement contest. Selecting one winner was certainly a challenge. Contest participants were required to express, in 25 words or less, "why agribusiness is important to Georgia." Tommy Weldon of Stone Mountain submitted the following winning entry: Agribusiness is the lifeline of Georgia's economy as it connects farms to consumers, rural resources to urban development and all Georgians to each other. Weldon was awarded two complimentary tickets to the Agribusiness Council's annual Harvest Ball planned for November 16 at the Waverly Hotel. In addition, he will receive accomodations for two at the Waverly for November 16, along with breakfast on Saturday. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agribusiness Council would like to express their appreciation to those individuals who took the time to participate in the statement contest. For additional information about the Harvest Ball, call the Agribusiness at 656-3698.
