FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin f^r^ Vol. 70, No. 45 Wednesday, November 7, 1984 Leads to Suspension Increase GaSs Forest Acreage The Georgia Forestry Commission is expanding the most successful reforestation campaign in the history of the state. The program already has resulted in tremendous economic potential to Georgia industry and landowners. The campaign, launched last year, already has resulted in more than 370,000 acres of trees planted in Georgia, the greatest number ever planted in a single season. , However, the needs of our booming forest industries continue to increase and create greater opportunities for our state economy, industries, and landowners. Georgia is one of the leading forestry states in (Our guest columnist this week is John W. Mixon, Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission, Box 819, Macon 31298-4599.) the nation and long has been the number one state in the pulp and paper industry. Georgia is also first in lumber production east of the Rockies. Forestry in Georgia is now a $6.6 billion industry with more than 74,000 employees. Pulp and paper mills running 24-hours-a-day continue to create a mushrooming demand for future raw materials, while our numerous lumber, veneer mills, pole processing plants and wood processing operations also require a continuous harvest of trees. An intensive replanting program is the only way we can sustain this vital economic advantage. Committees again are being organized in practically every Georgia county to provide guidance and encourage landowners to plant trees on cutover lands, marginal and submarginal acreage, and other idle acreage. Landowners will be given complete and detailed guidance on how to turn idle acreage into profitproducing land. The Commission this season will produce 125 million seedlings in our nurseries with an even greater (Continued on Page 12) Of Grain Warehouse License The grain warehouse license of Midville Cotton Warehouse Co., Inc. in south Burke County was suspended and grain storage tanks were locked last week by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin took the action after an audit revealed a shortage of 71,000 bushels of receipted soybeans valued at approximately $445,000. A full investigation will be conducted to determine how the shortage occurred following the Department's last routine audit of the grain operation on October 2, 1984. In the meantime, the Department has confiscated receipts and taken possession of the warehouse's records, in addition to locking the storage tanks. Warehouse owner Robert E. Evans, Sr. has told the Department that he does not have any farmer grain storage in his elevators. Evans' cotton storage is under license of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Reproduction Topic Of Dairy Seminar A short course on dairy reproduction management with the theme "Key to Profitability" will be held at the Rural Development Center December 12. The program is sponsored by the University of Georgia, ABAC, Cooperative Extension Service, and Coastal Plain Experiment Station. The registration fee is $3. For further information and a program contact the Office of Continuing Education, ABAC Station Box 12, Tifton, 31793-4401 or call 912/386-3267. Hardy Cherry Trees Enhance Landscape Yoshino cherry trees often are associated with Japan or the Tidal Basin area in Washington, D.C. But, many Georgians are unaware that the species is hardy in most areas of the state and can be used for ornamental purposes. The Yoshino cherry (Prunus yedoensis) reaches from 30 to 40 feet in (Continued on Page 12) ag consumer line . . . I would like some information on storing hard cheeses, particularly mozzarella. Can it be frozen? Mozzarella and some of the other hard cheeses may be frozen without a loss of texture or quality. The recommended storage time for mozzarella is three months in the freezer and three to six months in the refrigerator. Cheese kept longer than the recommended time may be usable, but will be of inferior quality and flavor. Most cheese products have a "sell by" date on the package, which refers to the last day the product may be sold. Always check the date on the cheese before you buy it. *** I would like for you to identify this plant for me. Is any part of it edible? Our horticulturist identified your sample as Solanum or Nightshade. The berries of this plant are very poisonous and the other plant parts also may be toxic. We do not recommend the tasting or sampling of wild plant material. Many wild plants are pretty but deadly. The effects of the recent dry weather on Georgia soybeans eased somewhat, and harvest was about one-third complete as of press time late last week. In Burke County, Georgia's number one soybean producer last year, county Extension agent William Craven says yields probably will be down to a 12 bushel per acre county average. Where Georgia soybeans were irrigated, however, yields will be at normal levels of more than 24 bushels per acre. Georgia Soybean Commission Chairman, James Lee Adams, Jr., says that Commission-funded research is working on new varieties suited to the Georgia climate. "The drought has been our number one problem," Adams said, "We need varieties not so susceptible to drought, that can wait on rain." Fall Drought Prompts Special Pecan Survey In response to producers' concerns about the influence of the fall drought on the 1984 pecan crop in Georgia, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced a special pecan produc- tion survey. The Georgia Crop Reporting Ser- vice conducted a telephone survey of approximately 350 producers during the period of October 31 through November 6, 1984. Results of the survey will be released on November 9 by USDA's Statistical Reporting Service in its monthly crop report production report. Producer surveys for pecan production forecast are normally conducted as of September 1, October 1 and December 1 each year. Extremely dry weather conditions during September and most of October have increased producers' concerns about the extent of tree drop of immature nuts and meat yield of harvested nuts. The November 1 survey will utilize the same methodology used in the October 1 survey. The production forecast as of October 1 indicated a 1984 crop of 125 million pounds in (Continued on Page 12] THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, November 7, 1984 we ad lettw, ' t* Dear Editor I found the recent article on pawpaws to be especially interesting. The pawpaw has a wide range in North America and is so common in one area of southwest Michigan that there is a city named Paw Paw there. Your readers might be interested in knowing that the pawpaw is the only food plant of Georgia's most handsome butterflies, the zebra swallowtail. This insect is abundant all over Georgia and so the pawpaw must be found throughout the state. The zebra swallowtail is a large butterfly with greenish white and black stripes. There are three seasonal forms in Georgia. The early spring form appears in March and April and has a short tail. Bearing medium length tails, the summer form flies in May and June. The late summer and fall forms are larger in size and have swallowtails as long as the rest of the hind wing. They appear from July through October. George R. Wren 956 Seville Drive Clarkston, Georgia 30021 Dear Editor I have been getting the MARKET BULLETIN for many years. I sure do enjoy the paper. I sent in a quilt pattern I made sometime ago and it was in the paper. Before long, I received 80 letters wanting the pattern. I am an old time farmer and I have a little garden. I will be 90 in December and my grandchildren and greatgrandchildren help me with it and yard work. I couldn't get along without them.
