FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 44 Wednesday, October 31, 1984 Pt. Gtliuftl Fife Ag Illiteracy Dominates US This is the first generation of Americans which have had little or no direct connection with farming. Large numbers of older citizens, as well as their ancestors, lived and worked on farms. The South, especially, was heavily rural up to World War II. In 1940 there were 216,000 farms in Georgia with a population of 1.4 million, or more than 40 percent of the total. By 1980, however, one long generation later, the number of farms had dropped to 59,000. The number of people living on operating farms had declined to only 121,000 two to three percent of the state's population. The great transformation in agriculture which rapidly reduced the number of farms and farmers means that very few Americans under 35 years of age have any significant understanding of agriculture from first hand experience. (Our guest columnist is Dr. Gilbert C. File, Richard B. Russell Professor of American History, University of Georgia, LeConte Hall, Athens 30602, and author Cotton Fields No More: Southern Agriculture, 1865-1890. There is such a great lack of information and so much misinformation about agriculture, farming, food production, farms and farm problems, that some have dubbed our condition as one of agricultural illiteracy. Indeed, farm editors, agricultural writers, college deans, and even some philanthropic foundations have sounded the alarm. Something, they say, must be done to inform this and future generations about the crucial role of farmers and food production. Can anything be done to stimulate awareness of the vital role agriculture plays in our society? On September 5, Sylvia Bryant wrote in this column about an agriculture curriculum for public school children. But I want to address the problem from the perspective of college and university students. One approach would be for faculty members in the liberal arts to incorporate more material in some of their (Continued on Page 12) Halloween Night Jessee Leaves Market Bulletin I don't believe in ghosts and witches When the sky is clear and the sun is bright, But I am not all that certain When darkness falls on Halloween night. I plan to buy some extra candles And oil that my lamps give light. I usually trust the power company But not, of course, on Halloween night. I like poems like Poe's Raven And in Hitchcock movies I delight, But that's a kind of relaxation That I don't need on Halloween night. It is nice to see the dawn of November, And not just because the weather fs right, But the first sunrise of November Means that I've survived Halloween night. Aaron Thomas B/ackshear, Georgia FmHA Program Helps Valera Jessee, editor of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN since February 1978, has resigned her post. After 14 years with the MARKET BULLETIN, Mrs. Jessee has decided to become a homemaker. Mrs. Jessee authored the "What Is" column and the "Grandpa's Garden" column before be-' coming editor of the paper and has served -as- Information Specialist with the department since 1970. In addition to serving as editor of the MARKET BULLETIN, she was director of The Information and Education Division. Lisa Ray, who has served as assistant editor of the MARKET BULLETIN since 1981, will assume the duties of editor effective November 1, 1984. Cope With Farm Debt A farm debt restructuring program for farmers experiencing severe financial difficulty can be in operation in Georgia within two weeks. Under the program, FmHA can set aside up to 25 percent or $200,000, whichever is less, of an FmHA borrower's debt for five years without interest. For a non-FmHA borrower, the agency can guarantee part of a new loan if the lender will write off a minimum of 10 percent of the existing debt. In both cases, the goal is to restore the borrower to a positive cash flow situation. Borrowers will receive letters asking them to contact the FmHA County Office about an appointment to review their loan, the first step in the restructuring process. Handicraft Edition The handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published on November 21. Deadline for notices is November 7. ag consumer line. . I sent $35.00 to a company in Florida to receive information on addressing envelopes at home to earn extra income. I haven't heard anything from the company and it's been two months. What should I do now? According to a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Inspector's Office, they have received between 3 to 4000 complaints against this particular company. He recommends that you write the regional Chief Postal Inspector, 10th Floor, Southern Region, U.S. Postal Service, 1407 Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, 38161-0001. They are investigating this company and trying to solve consumer's complaints. Beware of work-at-home schemes. Before sending money to any company, always contact your local postal inspector or Better B*usi*nes*s Bureau. I bought several cans of baby formula from the grocery store the other day. I did not notice that they were out of date until I started to open a can. Can you check out this situation and make this store stop leaving outdated baby formula on the shelf? Our inspector checked the store and found several cans formula to be out of date. At the time of his inspection, no outdated baby food or juices were found. He spoke with management about this situation and he will continue to monitor the store to see that this problem does not occur again. Although outdated products of any kind should not be offered for sale, you should be careful to check the dates before you make a purchase, especially baby food and formula. *** You may call Consumer Service toll-free at 1-800-282-5852 if you have questions or problems regarding products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. He has been working on amateur citrus research since his retirement 20 years ago. He and his wife Juliana use the small poncirus trifoliata fruit for seasoning as most people would use a lemon. He also has crossed the fruit with an orange, producing a larger fruit that he says tastes similar to grapefruit. Collins hopes more Georgians will follow in his footsteps and prove some varieties of citrus can be grown successfully in South Georgia. Ag Illiteracy (Continued from Page 1) courses on agriculture, farming and rural life. Courses in history, political science, sociology, economics and literature, among others, offer an ideal framework for the presentation of farm and agricultural information. The important task of combating agriculture illiteracy cannot be left to the colleges of agriculture. Faculty members in the liberal afts also have a responsibility to deal with this problem. Farmers and food are crucial in our society. It is time that we enhanced our understanding of producers, production and distribution of food. There is no more important aspect of our history than that dealing with the growth and development of the nation's agriculture. Much of our best heritage rests in the land and in farming.
