FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 42 Wednesday, October 17, 1984 Becfaj Nutrition, Goal Of Food Program "Champions of Nutrition" is the theme for this year's national school lunch week, October 14-20. Georgia ranks among the top three in the country in school lunch participation and very high in having a low price for meals. The nutrition program provides lunch to eight out of ten children and breakfast to one and one-half out of ten children every school day. Food service employees numbering 12,500 and local purchases of more than $87 million dollars worth of food make a significant contribution to Georgia's economy. (Our guest columnist this week is Becky Domokos-Bays, Executive Director of the Georgia School Food Service Association, Inc., 3951 Snapfinger Parkway, Suite 585, Decatur 30035.) Last year alone, the school nutrition program purchased 160 million half pints of milk, 16 million pounds of poultry, 2.7 million pounds of peanut butter, 53 million dozens of eggs and 87 million pounds of fruits and vegetables. USDA buys $30,474,829 of food from Georgia for national distribution in the school lunch program peanut products, soybean oil, poultry, flour, etc. The school nutrition program is vital to the well-being of Georgia's children. It provides children with information which helps them to make wise food choices throughout their lives. A poorly fed child is less likely to learn effectively and is more apt to be a classroom behavior problem. Children who spend their lunch money for non-nutritious foods such as candy bars, chips and soft drinks on a sustained basis run the danger of not only being undernourished but overweight and having dental problems. The message is obvious the Georgia nutrition program is good for you and Georgia's economy. The Georgia School Food Service Association invites you to eat at your local schools during National School Lunch Week and see for yourself that Georgia is a true champion of nutrition in the national school lunch program. Ag em Strengthens Procurement Mission Boosts Ga. Exports Local ASC Committee The House Agriculture Committee has approved a bill (H.R. 3746) to strengthen the farmer-elected Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) committees which help administer government farm programs across the nation. The bill would: Allow county ASC committees to petition the Secretary of Agriculture to reduce or increase the number of community committees in the county, provided that the number of community panels may not be raised beyond the number which the county had on December 31, 1980. Extend the number of years community committee members serve from the present one year to three years. Provide that each community committee will meet at least two times annually. Specify a list of committee duties, including relaying information on government programs to farmers and reporting back to county and state ASC committees and others on grass-roots farmer recommendations for changes in farm programs. Require the Secretary of Agriculture to provide community committee members with timely information on federal farm programs. Taiwan, the Republic of China, purchased almost $22 million worth of Georgia soybeans last week, increasing their expected purchases here by 60 percent. Development Council, said Taiwan would buy more than the expected . What type of lawn grass can I sow this fall? . For a quick temporary cover, our horticulturist suggests that you sow annual rye. This grass will remain green until May. For a permanent turf, he suggests fescue, which will last for several years. The best time to sow these cool season grasses is from September 1 to November 1. May is the best time to sow or sprig warm season grasses such as bermuda, centipede or zoysia. *** You may call Consumer Services toll-free at 1-800-282-5852, or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645, if you have ques- 54,000 metric tons of soybeans, "If the price is right." Three companies won bids to sup- ply 84,000 metric tons of the Georgia-grown grain: Columbia Grain, Inc. of Portland, Oregon; Gulf Coast Grain, Inc. of Memphis, Tenn.; and Continental Grain, of Chicago. The soybeans will be shipped between April 7, 1985 "and August 5, 1985. The U. S. supplies all of Taiwan's soybean needs. About 30 percent of the soybeans are used directly for human consumption, with about 70 percent crushed to extract the oil, also used for human consumption. If you have a late crop of vegetables and are afraid they will be damaged by an early frost, there are several things you can do to prolong your harvest. The cole crop such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and the like need no protection. Their flavor is ever improved by frost. Short crops such as lettuce, bush beans, or Irish potatoes can be lightly covered with pine or wheat straw, and then further covered with a large sheet of thin plastic. This "insulation-and-blanket" method holds the earth's heat close to the plants and can extend your growing season considerably. Be sure to remove the plastic sheet during the day to prevent overheating. A few holes poked in low spots in the plastic will prevent unwanted accumulation of excess rain. Tall crops, such as tomatoes, are more difficult to protect. Sometimes they can be carefully removed from their stakes, laid on a bed of pine straw and covered as above. If this is too much trouble, pick the fruits green and let them ripen indoors. There is not much you can do to save your okra. Many of the root crops can be left in the ground past frost and dug as needed. Some gardeners try to bring their crops through an early frost by sprinkling with water overnight. While this may work on fruit trees in the spring. The vegetable gardener usually ends up with a soggy mess. Try to get your fall vegetables in a little earlier next year. ; :iiie : Atlanta; :'U:^;: : The/:; contest resioterits of fh HoteI in . - .- 5 - . ; -. 2, Box 1-8-5'-, Collins Page 12 Grandpa's Garden You can dig your Jerusalem artichokes when the flowering tops begin to die. Or, you may choose to leave them in the ground and just dig as needed. They will keep all winter this way, if mulched. Once they have been harvested, you can only store them for a short time. Be sure to harvest all of your Jerusalem artichokes. Any tubers left in the ground until spring will usually grow as volunteers. If left, they can grow out of control and become a bothersome weed. It's apple pick ing time in Georgia. You can make an apple picker by cutting a hole large enough for an apple to go through, in the bottom of a bleach bottle. Nail the bottle, bottom up, to the end of a long pole or old broomstick. Use it to harvest apples and other hard-to reach fruit. Now is a good time to mulch your strawberry and blueberry plants. Mulching conserves moisture and controls weed problems. Blueberry mulch should be about two inches deep after it settles, so initially apply about four inches. Apply a two inch mulch for strawberries. Pinestraw, pine bark, and well rotted sawdust all are good choices for mulching materials. Out of state wanted Want a window pick-up head for a JD 3880 forage harvester. Edwin Martin, Enterprise, AL. Failure to file a statement of loss by December 1, 1984, may result in your being unable to share in the pro rata distribution. r FARMERS GRAIN STATEMENT OF LOSS To: Hon. Ben. H. Carter U. S. District Courthouse 75 Spring St., SW Atlanta, GA 30335 Farmers Grain owes me $ (p mount of claim) because I stored bushels of _______ at (grain) this warehouse and failed to receive payment for this grain. (Claimant's Signature) (Claimant's Printed Name) (Address & Telephone No.) (Continued from Page 1) The remaining meal is fed to hogs and poultry, said Chang. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, serving as the official host for the delegation, noted: "This significant increase in the expected purchase is one big step in bringing prosperity back to the farm community." Irvin added that the strength of the dollar still is impeding efforts to sell U. S. agricultural goods abroad and said if that were changed and supplies were assured of reliability, even more agricultural products likely could be sold to Taiwan. "When we have a country like the Republic of China that depends on America for 100 percent of their soybeans, and a large percentage of all their food needs, we must cherish that market and do everything we can to hang on to (the market) and prove that we will always be a dependable supplier," Irvin said. Trade leader Chang said the purchases took place, and were larger than intended because of the friendship between the U. S. and Taiwan and, "Because the farm product of the U. S. is very superior in quality and fair in price, and because soybeans are our principal food. "Our health, our nutrition is very much dependent on the supply from the United States. In this respect we thank you very much for supplying the essential food we need, and that we do not produce ourselves," Chang said.
