FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 40 Wednesday, October 3, 1984 Polo Compliments Ga. Agriculture While polo used to be the exclusive province of the rich because it was imported to this country from England by the wealthy publisher of a New York newspaper, the sport is now firmly in the hands of people of more ordinary means. Polo is a 2000-year-old sport played on horseback by two teams of four persons each. The object of the game is for one team to knock a four inch plastic ball through the opposing team's goal. Each goal generates a score of one point. The player strikes the ball with a 50-inch mallet which has a head the size and shape of a banana. All it takes to play polo is 90 percent desire, ten percent ability and a horse. Actually, one player needs (Our guest columnist this week is Paul S. Liston, President of the Atlanta Polo Club, Inc., 4432 Columns Drive, Marietta 30067.) three horses in order to play a complete polo game, which has six seven-minute periods. A polo horse must gallop, stop, turn, then resume the gallop - all in the space of a few seconds. The emotional demands on the horse are almost as rigorous as the physical drain. Yes, polo ponies do understand what they are doing in a polo game. This came home to me when I bought a veteran polo pony from an experienced player. The pony began his turns, runs and stops an instant before I made the request. He would also stop suddenly at the sound of the ending horn, whether I wanted him to or not. The most popular polo ponies are not ponies at all, but full sized (Continued on Page 12) Special Equine Ads Pages 4-8 Dry Weather '"["'-'. Apples are available at many roadside stands and grocery stores now. ' JjusJieci ^^ ^ Review Legal Matters Involved in Boarding Georgia's equine industry seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. Likewise, the number of horse boarding facilities is increasing. Establishing a boarding facility seems like an attractive, simple income source for small or part time farmers. But, there are serious considerations that should be reviewed before actually taking in horses for boarding or pasture rental. But while reviewing physical accomodations, do* not overlook the Ron Conley Appointed Assistant Commissioner Commissioner Tommy Irvin has named J. Ron Conley assistant commissioner for entomology and pesticides in the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "The Department's responsibilities in the entomology and pesticide areas have expanded rapidly over the last several years," said Irvin in announcing the appointment. "This expansion warrants formation of a separate major division with the (Continued on Page 12) legal aspects involved in boarding horses. You may have second thoughts about taking in a horse for extra income after considering the increased responsibility and the additional costs involved for an attorney and insurance coverage. * Check local zoning ordinances. While zoning may permit you to keep horses for pleasure, stabling horses for profit may be prohibited. * Review insurance coverage. Boarding facility operators should consider carrying care, custody and control insurance, according to legal experts. This is to protect yourself, as well as clients and their animals. Since a boarding facility will probably result in an increase of activity (Continued on Page 12) Compete for Tickets To '84 Harvest Ball The annual Harvest Ball, sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the fall. Wednesday, October 3, 1984 Polo Compliments (Continued from Page 1) thoroughbred or quarter horse breed horses, usually 15.1 to 15.3 hands in height. Most thoroughbred horses used in polo are former race horses, bought off the track just after their race careers have begun to decline. The quarter horses are usually former cutting horses. A cutting horse generally makes a superb polo pony, because a cutting horse is used to turning, stopping and running and is familiar with the swinging rope or lasso which is as upsetting to a green horse as is a swinging polo mallet. Very little, if any, additional training is required to make a cutting horse into a polo pony. The Atlanta Polo Club is firmly intertwined with the Georgia agricultural community. Each polo player has between three and six horses. Each horse requires hay, usually coastal bermuda or alfalfa hay, purchased via ads in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin from Georgia farmers. Each horse requires grain and pasture as well. The grain is purchased from local feed dealers or in bulk from Georgia's suppliers of grain. Pasture are either leased or owned. Additionally, the horses' require the regular use of farriers and veterinarians, all of whom are Georgia residents. And, since polo is a sport played during the summer, many young people find temporary summer employment grooming, working and otherwise taking care of polo ponies. If you are interested in learning, playing or watching polo, contact me. There are several polo clubs in or around Georgia - Columbus, Atlanta, St. Simons Island, and across the lines from Augusta. Fields are under consideration or construction in Douglas County and Stone Mountain. All of these clubs welcome visitors and prospective players. ag consumer line . . .
