FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 38 Wednesday, September 19, 1984 Ron National Farm Safety Week Ag Fairs Still Popular Events A fair is an annual "gathering" for display of livestock, agricultural pro- ducts, canned goods, school displays, needlework, arts and crafts and features education in all forms. The Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs (G.A.A.F.) is a non-profit organization governed by four- teen officers and directors who have been elected by the general membership from the various fairs around the state of Georgia. (Our guest columnist this week is Ron McCurry, President of the Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs, P.O. Box 32, Atlanta 30301.)_________________ These officers and directors give of their time and effort to hold together an organization that represents the sixty plus county fairs that take place in Georgia every fall. The purpose of the G.A.A.F. is to encourage, by mutual assistance and helpfulness, the growth and usefulness of all Georgia fairs. It supports the dissemination of knowledge in all economic lines by featuring agricultural production, livestock raising and poultry breeding. This association holds annual workshops and conventions to assist those that work with their fairs on a community level. It helps them make their fair a "show window" of production by improved methods, passed on by experienced and knowledgeable representatives of the industry. To stay good - all fairs must strive to do better. The community service organizations that work so diligently with them (such as Exchange, Kiwanis, Lions, Civitan, Jaycees, American Legion and VFW) realize that nothing great can be accomplished without hard work and enthusiasm. This week is set aside to reaffirm the need to continue to reduce the number and severity of farm related accidents. The theme, "Manage for Better Safety and Health," emphasizes that accident prevention must be a management goal and built in to a farmer's method of operation. Agricultural work-related accidents caused 1900 deaths and 190,000 disabling injuries in 1983, according to preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council. Farmers must keep informed about safety and health and learn to prevent injury and illness in order to reduce these numbers. Although there are some things a farmer cannot control, such as the weather, all farmers can work to prevent accidents and work related injuries by following these guidelines suggested by the National Safety Council. * Develop a safety and health plan tailored for your individual farming operation. * Carry out regular safety inspections of equipment and facilities. * Buy quality products, then use and care for them as directed in product manuals, on labels, and/or as instructed by product suppliers. * Train your employees and see that they can work safely. * Take needed precautions before starting a job. Have the right tools. Check out equipment. See that (Continued on Page 12} jjjjjjjif^j^^jj^^^l'^::[ ag consumer line. . . How long should I store hay for cattle feed? When properly managed, they can supply a family with fresh, wholesome eggs, as well as meat and a source of organic fertilizer for the compost pile. Raising chickens is appealing especially to "sundown" farmers. Mature birds require only about a half hour of time each day and the cash outlay for establishing a flock is relatively small compared with other livestock projects. Before you go out and buy chickens, you should consider your location. If you are located in an urban or suburban area, check with (This is the eighth in a series of articles about backyard farming endeavors.) your local zoning office to make sure livestock is permitted. Close neighbors also should be considered since the noise or odors may be annoying. Determine the size of your flock. The number of birds depends on the number of eggs you want. You will need at least two hens per family member for an adequate supply. Extension specialists recommend keeping no less than 12. Select a breed that best suits your intentions. Chickens can be placed in one of four general classifications: (1) egg layers, (2) meat producers, (3} dual purpose (egg and meat producers), and (4) exotic or exhibition breeds.
