FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 36 Wednesday, September 5, 1984 Syto Schools Need Ag Curriculum An educational task force has been formed to promote agriculture in the classroom in Georgia schools. The "ag in the classroom" concept originated from a National Task Force composed of educators and agricultural leaders. The Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Task Force to implement the U S D A sponsored program was formed earlier this year by representatives of agriculture, education, agribusiness and the state legislature. (Our guest columnist this week is Sylvia Bryant, Chairperson for the Agriculture in the Classroom Task Force, Ben Hill County Elementary School, Route 3, Fitzgerald 31750.) The purpose of the program is to bring to the attention of educators, effective up-to-date educational materials about modern agriculture. Agriculture is our nation's and state's number one industry. However, we find fewer and fewer people aware of the basic role that the production of food and fiber plays in our daily lives. When the child asks, "What animal does that bacon come from?" the fact is particularly evident. The "ag in the classroom" task force hopes to encourage more effective teaching about agriculture and its role in an interdependent society. The program also seeks to assist in implementing the teaching of agricultural concepts in the classroom. The Georgia Task Force is made up of four committees: the curriculum committee, chaired by Lou Gassett, a first grade teacher, DeKalb County School System; the in-service teacher training committee, chaired by Dale Maitland, consultant with Coastal Plains CESA, Valdosta; the pre-service teacher training committee, chaired by Dr. Chris Smit, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture, University of Georgia; (Continued on Page 12] Federal Farm Bill Hearing Scheduled The chairman and other key members of the Agriculture Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives will conduct a special field hearing in Statesboro on September 8 to receive comments and suggestions on rewriting the federal farm bill. Congressman Lindsay Thomas, who is a member of the House committee, said the hearing will be open to the public and will feature presentations by local area farmers, foresters, state farm organizations, and representatives of commodity groups and lending institutions. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin added "there won't be another chance like this for the farmers to meet face to face with the Congressmen who will help write national farm programs. We'll need all the input we can get to address the issues'most important to Georgia agriculture." First District Congressman Thomas said, "This is going to be a virtually unprecedented opportunity for citizens from throughout our area to have direct input into the legislative process for the 1985 farm bill. The Congress will vote on that bill next year, and it will shape out policies for several years to come on farm loans, crop and timber programs, our agriculture Extension service and other issues." The agriculture committee hearing will begin at 1 p.m. in the Conference Center room of the Assembly (Continued on Page 12) Shortcourse Features Cattle Forage Systems A short course on forage systems for beef and dairy cattle will be held at the Rural Development Center in Tifton on September 26. The program will begin with registration at 8:35 a.m. and conclude with an equipment display at 1:30 p.m. The program will cover the following topics: comparison of methods for hay harvesting and storage, silage additives, ammoniation of hay and effect of maturity on hay quality. A $3 registration fee will be charged. For further information, contact ABAC'S office of Continuing Education, ABAC Station, Box 12, Tifton 31793 or call 912-386-3267. Milk Distributors Predicting Severe Shortages in Georgia Some Georgia milk distributors are predicting they will be forced to ration fresh milk supplies to handlers possibly this week, right at the beginning of the fall school term, if they can get the milk at all, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Midwest milk manufacturing plants are extremely reluctant to turn the fresh milk loose, and when they do, they're charging "give up costs" or "premiums" of up to $2.63 per hundred pounds (about 11 gallons)," Irvin said. "These premiums are completely outrageous," Irvin charged. "Some of these Midwest plants do nothing Happy Grandparents Day! but produce butter, cheese and powdered milk manufactured dairy products to sell to the govern- ment. As a result, we taxpayers will end up paying $1.5 billion this year to the dairy support program. This program has to purchase and store this already tremendous and grow- ing stockpile of milk products." The South historically experiences a shortage of milk in the fall when school resumes. This year the shor- tage is more acute since southern dairy producers participated in a federal government cutback pro- gram. Designed to decrease the surplus of manufactured milk pro- ducts produced overwhelmingly by Midwest, Western and Great Lakes dairymen, where they have as high as an 85 percent surplus the program trimmed milk production by less than four percent. Production was cut by more than 10 percent in the Southeast. Forty percent of Georgia producers agreed to cut back production by approximately 25 percent. Eight weeks ago, Irvin sent a telegram to United States Secretary of Agriculture John Block asking that he take emergency action to halt charging of premiums that then were up to $1.50 per hundredweight. Last week, Irvin sent a second telegram urging emergency action, and ask- ing, "How high must these premiums climb before some action will be taken?" Grandparents are special all year round, but September 9, has been set aside to show them a little extra recognition. The first Sunday after Labor Day will be celebrated as National Grandparents Day a time to let our grandparents know how much they are loved and appreciated. Grandmother Lelia Holbrooks of Gainesville, is shown with her grandchildren, John and Kisle, who are holding the 21 and one half inch long cucumber she grew in her backyard garden. ag consumer line. . .
