Teal tcfe Cow Destructive Gypsy Moth Presents Top Agribusiness Threat to Valuable Ga. Forests Counties Chosen Most Georgians realize the importance of our agribusiness industry. It is a value adding process which includes farming, processing, equipment, chemicals, distribution, mer- le handising, [transportation Sand marketing. It's an impressive $18 billion industry for our [State. The Georgia Agribusiness I Council, a non' profit, statewide membership organization, operates full time to represent and further promote agribusiness, in cooperation with over 100 other ag-related associations and organizations. (Our guest columnist this week is Lovick P. Corn, President of the Georgia Agribusiness Council, 332 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334). One of the most far-reachng activities is the Georgia Agribusiness Development and Leadership Recognition Program sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, Georgia Power Company and the Cooperative Extension Service. This program is co-sponsored each year to promote new and expanded agribusiness, develop strong agribusiness leadership and generally support the agricultural interests of the State. It is a self-help program where all participating counties gain by setting goals and working together, regardless of whether they are selected as a finalist or the state winner. (Continued on Page 12) Gypsy moths slowly are invading the South. An ambitious plan brought them to Massachusetts from France in hopes of cross-breeding them with silk worms. The plan not only failed but has caused a major problem for U.S. - agriculture and forestry. Hatching gypsy moth caterpillars escaped from a laboratory in 1869 and they have since spread throughout the Northeast. In its caterpillar stage, this moth devours forests, defoliating more than 15 million New England acres in the last three years. Movement of the pest remains slow, but it is making its way South. In Georgia, state and federal agriculture, forestry, and Extension officials already are planning strategies to minimize its infiltration. A Gypsy Moth Advisory Committee has been formed, and 5,000 traps have been placed over the last three years in an effort to monitor the moth's movement. So far in 1984, 24 adult moths have been found; less than 100 have been trapped since 1982. "Controlling the spread of the gypsy moth is essential for agriculture When millions of gypsy moth caterpillars are hungry, they can devour and strip everything green from a forest. and for the state's forestry industry," asserts Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "The erosion and loss of valuable soil that could result if (Continued on Page 12) Fall Agricultural Fairs Over the years, agricultural fairs have become a fall tradition. Although the events are not as numerous as they once were, over 50 fairs are held throughout Georgia each year. The county fair provides an outlet for local competition. Individuals can show off their prize preserves, vegetables, livestock and handiwork. Many fairs also feature such disappearing skills as quiltmaking and shingle splitting along with a variety of educational and county exhibits. This fall, take the opportunity to visit the fair in your area. A list of upcoming agricultural fairs is featured on page 9. One Foot on the Farm Reliable Milk Cow Provides Nutrition by the Gallon Before the days of modern dairy farms, processing plants and transportation, keeping a milk cow was a necessity for many families. Today most folks depend upon commercial dairymen to furnish fresh, wholesome milk and dairy products. But, there are still a few part-time farmers who prefer raising a milk cow or two. Although it is debatable whether or not raising a few milk cows saves money, these "sundown" farmers enjoy the luxury of "freshfrom-the-cow" milk and butter. In addition, they seem to gain a certain satisfaction from milking their own cow and producing dairy products for their family. A dairy cow is a major respon- sibility. While lactating, she must be milked twice a day on schedule. A large animal, often weighing over 1200 pounds, a cow requires large quantities of food. Helping Izach Othei Dear Editor: I wonder if any of your readers know where I might obtain a thimble with an open end. My mother, who has always sewn with this type of thimble, lost her's and I have not been able to find one. Janelle C. Stalvey Route 5, Box 265 Val*dos*ta, *Georgia 31602. Dear Editor: We are looking for an old fashioned wringer attachment (rubber rollers). We need it for preparing natural rush used in re-seating chairs. My father-in-law makes rush seats as a hobby, but lost his wringer in moving here to live with us. We have been unable to find a replacement at flea markets. Please let us know where we can find one. Mrs. Edward J. Magner 5185 Burnt Hickory Road Ken*ne*saw*, Georgia 30144 Dear Editor: I recently moved out to the country and have started rais- ing chickens. I would sure appreciate some advice on how to build a chicken coop and any information anyone could share on the different types of fowl and how to raise them. If any retired farmers in my area could help me with this project, please let me know. G. Sammons Palmetto, Georgia 30268 404-463-4424 Dear Editor: We really enjoy the MARKET BULLETIN and we try to learn all we can from the help printed in it. Will you please print the remedy as to what to do for peonies to make them bloom, so I can learn what to do for my own. Maudie M. Arrington 514 Dixie Drive Thomaston, Georgia 30824 (Editor's Note: According to our plant specialist peonies should not be planted deeper than one inch and should have full sun in order to bloom. Also, in the South, the early season varieties perform best since they require less winter cold. Autumn is the best tim* e* to* plant or transplant). Dear Editor: I would like for your readers to learn of the day camp for children ages 3-19 with diabetes. This is the third year for this camp. It was set up for the purpose of educating young folks about themselves and caring for their disease. Diabetes is the third leading cause of death in the U. S., but with proper education, a person can learn to live longer, more productive and lead a normal and healthier life. It is Camp Calvin, located between Ga. Highway 92 and Ga. Highway 19-41. It is above Atlanta International Raceway on Hampton Road. If any one wishes more information, send a stamped self addressed envelope for registration form, or call me at home 461-6457. I need some more nurses to help volunteer for the hours of 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Mrs. Ivy Lockett, Camp Director 896 Corinth Drive Jonesboro, Georgia 30236 The MARKET BULLETIN often receives the most unique requests from its readers. Recently we had two requests which required a little more searching from our staff. We thought perhaps other readers might benefit from what we found. A reader requested assistance in locating her grandchildren. We gave her the following information: The Salvation Army, 1424 Northeast Expressway, Atlanta, Georgia 30329, offers assistance if the person you seek is over 18 years old. Write and request a form for a missing person. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Suite 700, 1835 K Street NW, Washington, DC 20006, telephone (202) 634-9821. The Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. Contact your local county office for assistance. Another reader had a problem finding shoes since one foot was larger than the other. National Arch Shoe Exchange, Rural Route 4, Indianola, Iowa 50125 serves as a clearing house for people with similar problems.
