FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 29 Wednesday, July 18, 1984 Katk Awut Paravet Degree Option at FVSC Individuals who enjoy working with animals, yet are undecided about their future should consider veterinary technology as a career option. ____ Fort Valley State College (FVSC) is one of two institutions in Georgia which offers a veterinary technology degree program. It is tailored for students who desire to enter the field of veterinary medicine without spending the years required to become a veterinarian. (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. K. L Arora, Director of the Veterinary Technology Program, Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley 31030.) A veterinary technology degree prepares students for careers as paravets. Paravets work as assistants to veterinarians or research scientists. Graduates of the program are trained in the care of animals, hospital procedures, physical condition of animals in health and disease, disease control measures, surgical and radiological techniques and in routine lab and animal health care products. Broadly speaking, an animal health technician can assist the veterinarian in many tasks that would otherwise consume the veterinarian's valuable time. Fort Valley State College's program requires seven quarters (two years) of coursework including practical training. Four quarters are (Continued on Page 14) INSIDE Letters to the Editor.......... page 2 Georgia Cooking ...... page 5 Livestock Quotations......... page 6 Helping Each Other......... page 9 Features ...... pages 11 & 14 Bulletin Calendar ......... page 15 SWIP rung this lall. *Q|!ir IfQftse ,;' -it'. ^s'e^" Disease Outbreak Prompts Restrictions On Exotic Birds Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has enacted an emergency rule prohibiting shows or assemblies of pet or exotic birds without a special permit from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Larvadex Insecticide Banned in Georgia Larvadex will not be available to Georgia poultry farmers this year according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Larvadex is a feed-through insecticide used to control the larvae of flies found in the manure of caged layer hens. EPA deferred a final decision on whether or not to conditionally register Larvadex pending additional (Continued on Page 16) Tobacco Market Schedule Page 15 The rule, which is in effect for 120 days, also prohibits pet or exotic birds from being shipped or brought into the state without special permit. "We enacted this emergency rule because of the recent threat Exotic Newcastle Disease made to our poultry industry," Irvin said. "This highly contagious disease was diagnosed in pet birds, and though we have no reports of contact with poultry, the threat of exposure to our poultry industry is very real." Exotic Newcastle, a highly virulent and contagious disease, has been positively diagnosed in six locationsin Alabama, one in Florida and one in Carroll County, Georgia. Approximately 100 exotic pet birds have been depopulated at one premise in Whitesburg, Georgia. The birds were purchased directly from an Alabama exotic bird dealer who owned the birds diagnosed with the disease. "Of all foreign animal diseases which threaten Georgia livestock, Exotic Newcastle is the most contagious," said Irvin. "If this avian disease should get out of hand, it could devastate Georgia's billion dollar poultry industry and cause poultry prices to skyrocket." Go. Apple Growers Optimistic About Harvest of 1984 Crop For the first time in two years, Georgia apple growers will have plenty of apples to harvest. The state crop starts coming in later this month. "We are optimistic about this year's harvest, said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Georgia produces such a wide variety of high quality apples, consumers should plan to take advantage of this ample crop." Apple production in Georgia has been extremely low for the last two years due to late spring cold weather damage. This year the Georgia Crop Reporting Service estimates a significant increase in production of up to 125 percent above 1983. Georgia growers ship some apples to processing plants that make apple juice and applesauce. However, roadside stands will have plenty of fresh apples, cider and other apple products, according to the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Apples. Georgia traditionally produces the first new apple crop in the United States. Although harvesting will start in July, the major portion of the apples will not be packed until August 20. That is when Red Delicious, Georgia's number one apple, will be ready for the markets. Harvesting (Continued on Page 11) Tobacco Growers Must Sign Crop Certification When tobacco growers bring their crop to warehouse floors this summer they must sign a certification that they have not used unapproved artificial ripening materials on their leaf. Otherwise they become ineligible for price support loans. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin warned that growers should take this certification very seriously. "Even though I'm not aware as to how widespread the practice is in the tobacco belt of using these herbicides, I want farmers to know that (Continued on Page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 18, 1984 letteu Dear Editor: Three years ago I advertised in the BULLETIN for a tub on legs. A lady that lived in Gumming at that time wrote me a letter. To make a long story short, even though she now lives in Marietta and I in Avondale Estates, we are still good friends. It has been my experience that the nicest people buy and sell through this very interesting paper. Just lately, someone asked me if I read the MARKET BULLETIN, "No, I inhale it!" Thanks so much. Sandra Grady 10 Clarendon Avenue Avondale Estates, Georgia 30002 Dear Editor: The MARKET BULLETIN has helped me down through the years in more ways than I can remember. I have advertised in the paper, and those folks who have called or written have been very nice (except one bad apple a man from Macon). I met a good, true friend through the paper... those kinds of friends are hard to find. I would like to thank each one of you who make the BULLETIN possible. Mrs. E. L. Mrs. Bob McWilliams Summerville, GA From the Dairy Cow to the Double Dip Ice Cream Part of U.S. for Generations Ice cream is a favorite treat of many Americans. In fact, approximately 15 quarts of ice cream are consumed per person each year in the United States, according to the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association. To celebrate the popularity of ice cream and its role in the dairy industry, July 15 - 21 has been officially delcared "National Ice Cream Week." Ice cream has been around for centuries. While it is impossible to say who invented the frozen treat, Marco Polo reported the practice of making water and milk ices in his travels to the Orient in the late 13th century. Water ices were popular in Venice and Italy from the late 14th century on. The first recorded occassion of the appearance of ice cream was at an elaborate banquet given by the English King Charles I around 1640. Ice cream was introduced to the American colonists as early as 1700 by a caterer in New York. The dessert grew in popularity when it was served in the homes of early celebrities George Washington and Dolly Madison. Since the early days, ice cream has evolved into various flavors and forms. It can be enjoyed in cones, on sticks, in bars and in sandwiches. Even though there have been more than 240 flavors of ice cream flavors manufactured in the U. S., vanilla remains the most popular, year in and year out accounting for nearly half of sales. Chocolate is second and strawberry is third. Even with the convenience and variety of ready-made ice cream, old-fashioned, home churned ice cream remains a popular treat. Use the recipe provided below to make a churn full of ice cream in celebration to National Ice Cream Week. COUNTRY STYLE VANILLA ICE CREAM (Yield: Approximately 3 quarts) 3 eggs g 1 3/4 cups sugar 3 cups milk K 3 cups whipping cream g 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. salt In a large mixing bowl beat eggs until foamy. Gradually add sugar; beat until thickened. Add milk, cream, vanilla and salt; mix thoroughly. Chill. Churn-freeze. Recipe tested and provided by the Southeastern United Dairy Industry Association.
