FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 24 Wednesday, June 13, 1984 Ag Graduates Begin Careers Throughout the state and nation proud graduates, parents, relatives, and friends will hear commencement addresses and participate in graduation exercises in June. We at the College of Agriculture are particularly proud of our graduates. We hope the rigorous academic training will help them in their careers. The College of Agriculture faculty does not consider their task complete at graduation, however. They are genuinely interested in ag alumni and will continue to be available for consultation, advice and assistance. (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. William P. Flatt, Dean and Coordinator for the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, 101 Conner Hall, Athens 30602.) Almost all College of Agriculture faculty who teach undergraduate and graduate students are joint staffed with the Agricultural Experiment Stations. This means they conduct research and work to solve problems that farmers, agribusinesses and consumers will encounter in the future. These research scientists will work on problems that will assist today's graduates to do a better job. Ag graduates pursuing careers in agriculture, forestry, home economics, or a related field will find a cadre of professional Cooperative Extension Service personnel available. Our graduates are in an enviable position of not only having received excellent training, but also of knowing personally the scientists who will be solving problems and the Extension personnel who will stand ready to assist and advise them. It may seen ironic, but all Georgia citizens can claim the University of Georgia as their state university. Our mission-goal is to serve every citizen. But we can do so only if Georgians are aware of the service available and take advantage of the resources that can be provided. Annual Vaccinations Reduce Threat of Equine Diseases Sidedressing Vegetables Need Many horse owners set up a yearly schedule for inoculations. Spring is an ideal time to vaccinate animals particularly for transmittable diseases, since many horses are participating in shows this time of year. Dr. Gary Heusner, Extension animal scientist, Athens, recommends the following yearly vaccinations: Horse Edition The special horse edition of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN is scheduled for July 4. This issue will include notices for horse shows in July, August and September, as well as, at stud notices, boarding facilities, and miscellaneous equine equipment. Deadline for the edition is | June 20. If your organization has a show scheduled for July, August, or September, submit your announcement, not to exceed 30 words, by June 20. Deadline for at stud, boarding facilities and miscellaneous equine equipment is also June 20. Tetanus: This is a disease caused by a bacterium called Clostridium tetani. Tetanus bacteria spores are present in most soils and especially horse manure. The bacteria produce toxin that affects the nervous system. Since mortality rates are very high with this disease, all horses should be immunized with a tetanus toxoid and given booster shots at recom- mended intervals. Equine Encephalomyehtis: Also known as "sleeping sickness," this is a viral disease that results in degeneration of the brain's vascular system. Since transmission is primarily by mosquitos, horses ideally should be vaccinated before the mosquito season begins. The three common viruses designated by geographical area which cause Encephalomyelitis are Eastern (EEE), Western (WEE) and Venezuelan (VEE). Mortality for WEE is about 20 to 30 percent. But, EEE and VEE have mortality rates ranging from 70 to 90 percent. a Summer Snack (Continued on Page 12) Although you may have fertilized your garden spot prior to spring planting, your crops may need a "second helping" of nutrients during the growing season. The application of organic or chemical fertilizers at this time often is referred to as sidedressing. Sidedressing simply involves placing nutrients on the soil surface close enough to the plant so that cultivating or watering carries the fertilizer to the plant's roots. Many plants require a sidedressing of fertilizer since plant growth and rain often remove vital nutrients from the soil. Fertilizer usually is placed in a shallow hole or trench beside vegetables when sidedressing. This enables the nutrients to gradually leach into the ground around the roots so plants can readily utilize Livestock Clip and Save Page 7 them. The technique is advocated by specialists since randomly scattering fertilizer might possibly "burn" leaves or roots. Row crops can be sidedressed by making a shallow furrow down each side of a row, four or five inches from vegetables. Lightly sprinkle about one tablespoon of 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 for every two to three feet of row, then cover with soil. To sidedress hills, make a furrow around each hill and follow the same directions. Do not let fertilizer come in contact with the plants and water immediately if rain is not expected. You may choose to apply an organic fertilizer such as manure. If so, make the furrows a little deeper and a few inches further away from the plants. Spread evenly in the furrow and cover with soil. (Continued on Page 12) ag consumer line. . . Q. How can I remove a bird's nest from my chimney? A: The nests may be removed by using a hook fastened to the end of a long pole to tear it down. If this does not work, you may have to seek the help of a professional chimney sweeper. *** Q. When a chicken is labeled "whole fryer with giblets," should giblets include a liver. All I have found lately are necks and occasionally a gizzard. A. Yes, giblets include the liver, gizzard and heart according to USDA regulations. The neck is a part of the chicken meat and not a gible*. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 13, 1984 letteu Oops! The guest column which appeared in last week's MARKET BULLETIN was written by Dr. James Christian, head of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Food Science Department, as indicated. A photo of Dr. Christian Smit, Associate Dean and Director of Resident Instruction for the UGA College of Agriculture, was incorrectly included with the column. Dr. Smit was the former head of the UGA Food Science Department. Or. Chris Smit Dear Editor My husband and I have been receiving the MARKET BULLETIN for about a year now and we would like to thank you for such an informative publication. I never thought I would have a reason to write to you until now. When my husband and I were expecting our second child, we began to pay more attention to young children wherever we went. We were truly shocked to see small children riding in shopping carts unrestrained. We saw children stand in the seat section and others climb from the seat section to the basket section. When our baby was old enough to sit in the seat section of the shopping cart, we would take a belt along to strap him in. Then, I decided to make a pad that would strap to fasten our child to the cart. We still never leave him unattended in the cart, but we do feel a little better when we have to look away from him to make a selection. We've had so many people ask us about our little pad, I've decided to offer it in the handicraft edition. We would just like to remind all parents to never leave their children unat- tended in a shopping cart and if possible, strap them in some way. Anita Stansel Route 10, Box 543 Vald*os*ta,* Georgia 31601 Dear Editor I advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN on a regular basis. What should I do if I submit an ad and sell the item after I have already mailed the notice in to you? Rich Smith Loganville, Georgia ! Helping 'Each Other 4 Dear Editor We would like donations of dog airline kennels or cages for the Gwinnett Humane Society. Donations of such items are tax deductable. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Roberta McCart c/o Gwinnett Humane Society P.O. Box 427 Lilburn, Georgia 30247 404-979-9655 (leave message) Dear Editor I have my grandmother's Franklin sewing machine. It must be 100 years old. I was able to continue to use it until about five years ago when I broke the last needle. I cannot find one to fit the Franklin model anywhere. I wonder if some of your readers could tell me where I might get one. Mrs. Edna Battle 3209 Martha Berry Hwy., N. W. Rome, Georgia 30161 Dear Editor I have raised dairy goats for the past seven years and have enjoyed working with these delightful animals. What started out to be a hobby is becoming a "way of life." Over the years, I have enjoyed experimenting with various ways of using the goat milk (i.e. making cheese, yogurt, fudge, pudding, etc.) Lately, I have developed a fine goat milk soap and am looking for ways to improve and perfect this product. I would very much like to contact others to discuss ways of adding natural scents to the soap by extracting oils from herbs, mint, lavender, lemon balm, whatever. I am also interested in having a mold to snape tne soap into attractive bars. June Radicot Route 1, Box 430 Gainesville, Georgia 30506 Dear Editor Recently, you printed a letter concerning spider lilies. I would like to respond to the question of why spider lilies do not bloom. People move the plants from place to place, hoping to make them bloom and defeat their purpose entirely. Spider lilies do not like moving and usually take a year or two to bloom again. They should be planted in a permanent loca- tion and, as long as the foliage is healthy, left alone.
